WELCOME TO

As we welcome you to the July Course on Saturday 22nd August, we gather for our final raceday of the season at this iconic venue - a fitting finale to another memorable summer. There is always a sense of celebration and reflection on closing day, as we enjoy the last opportunity this year to experience racing at the July Course. Today’s feature contest is the Somerville Auction Stakes, sponsored by Tattersalls, a race that has developed a strong reputation for showcasing talented two-year-olds and future stars of the sport. We are also delighted to stage the much-anticipated Town Plate, kindly sponsored by Goldings and Powters. A race steeped in local tradition and always warmly received, it remains a highlight for many racegoers and connections alike. Our thanks also extend to Blackwell Earthmoving for their valued support, and we are pleased to congratulate them on reaching the impressive milestone of 70 years in business - a remarkable achievement. They Sponsor the Hopeful stakes, provides an important opportunity for progressive sprinters to step into Pattern company and can highlight horses with exciting futures ahead. After racing, the celebrations continue as we welcome Scouting For Girls and the Kaiser Chiefs as our headline music act. Their energetic performance promises to provide the perfect soundtrack to bring the curtain down on the July Course season in style. On behalf of everyone at Newmarket Racecourses, I would like to thank our owners, trainers, jockeys and loyal racegoers for their support throughout the summer. We hope you enjoy a fantastic afternoon and evening as we close the July Course for the year. Best wishes,

Sophie Able Newmarket Racecourses and International Director

EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C D CD BF

= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r

= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified

d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and lbs) 12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 13. Horse’s owner 14. Horse’s breeder 15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB) 16. Draw – position of the horse in the starting stalls

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

Providing your complete betting service today Betting with Tote is available across the racecourse with a wide range of pool bets offered. No need to fill out a betting slip, simply tell one of our friendly team members your bet type, horses and how much you would like to spend. Any bets placed with Tote on course today help support racing as our profits are returned to the racecourse where the bet is placed.

Placing a Win bet? We pay whichever is more, the Tote pool price or the official Starting Price. If the SP pays more than Tote, we match it - guaranteed.

Need help picking? Ask for a Lucky Pick and our smart formula will do the hard work for you. Available on any bet, any race, just tell us how much you want to spend. Try a Lucky Pick wallet which includes a bundle of bets giving you multiple chances to win. Including the Placepot where we had a payout of £20,121 from a Lucky Pick wallet at Musselburgh earlier this year.

SEVENTH RACE

DISCOVER BRITISH RACING’S

THE NEWMARKET TOWN PLATE The Newmarket Town Plate is believed to be the oldest and longest Flat race in the world - instituted in 1665 by King Charles II and first run in 1666 to be run ‘forever’. Horses were to carry twelve stones and run over the Round Course of three and three-quarter miles. The original race was run after three heats on the (then) new Round Course; “on the outside of the Ditch from Newmarket, shall leave all the posts and flags the first and last heats on the right hand and the second on the left hand by starting and ending at the weighing post, by Cambridge Gap, called Thomond’s Post.” Half an hour was allowed between heats, after which the final itself was run within an hour and a half. Today’s race is therefore easy by yesterday’s standards! The Plate was the first with a set of Rules, for example: “Every rider that layeth hold on, or striketh any of the riders, shall win no plate or prize”.......“Whosoever winneth the plate or prize shall give to the Clerk of the Course twenty shillings, to be distributed to the poor both sides of Newmarket, and twenty shillings to the Clerk of the Race for which he is to keep the course plain and free from cart roots”.......“No man is admitted to ride for this prize that is either a serving man or groom.” POWTERS and GOLDING OF NEWMARKET are delighted to be supporting this historic race.

THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF FARRIERS PROMOTING THE WELFARE OF THE HORSE SINCE 1356 ROYAL CHARTER GRANTED 1674 The Worshipful Company of Farriers is delighted to support the Historic Newmarket Town Plate race by awarding its prestigious Best Shod Horse Award. The Farriers’ Company, which is numbered 55 in the register of City of London Livery Companies, retains a worldwide reputation for promoting the standards of the craft of farriery. It oversees the training and examinations of farriers and their continuing development. It was one of the first companies to have a Lady Master, HRH The Princess Royal in 1984-85. The Best Shod Awards are presented at a wide range of equestrian events and shows all over the United Kingdom including Badminton Horse Trials, Burghley Horse Trials and the Festival of Eventing, the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the Horse of the Year Show. The Company is also proud to award the Best Shod Horse award at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown. The Award will be judged by Mr Stephen Hill FWCF, a WCF approved Judge, at a suitable time prior to the race. It is not compulsory. The Judge will examine each horse taking into consideration, (a) the condition of the feet, (b) the making (or preparation) and fitting of the shoes and (c) the nailing and the position of clips. The winning horse will be awarded a Rosette and inscribed card, a Brass Plaque to the winning owner and a Brass Plaque for the registered Farrier responsible for its feet and shoeing. The Awards are part of the public face of the Company as well as the events where shoeing and forging competitions take place.

I have been passionate about breeding and racing for many years. My greatest breeding achievement was producing Bensalem, winner of the Grade 3 Stewart Family Spinal Research Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in 2011. I rode as an amateur for several years, although without success, and have taken part in a number of charity races, including the Punchestown Charity Race, Cheltenham’s Race for Cancer Research, and the Corinthian Series in Ireland. After a long career in financial services, I joined the breeding industry in 2024 and am now CEO of the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (ITBA). I’m married to the very patient Tish, and we have two children, Frankie and Martina, both working in London. I’m taking part in this race to raise funds for two outstanding charities: the Pat Smullen Fund and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

I’ve been given the opportunity by Clare and her team to ride in this year’s Town Plate and will be raising money for Breast Cancer UK, a cause close to my heart having lost my mother to the disease just a few years ago. I am a former point-to-point jockey and now work as a racecourse farrier. Alongside that, I work part-time as a mechanic and help out on my family’s farm whenever I can. Racing has always been a huge part of my life, and over the past ten years I have ridden in the Newmarket Town Plate on seven occasions! It has been particularly special to partner horses that have been both owned and trained by my family, making each ride even more meaningful.

I am the Director of Integrity at the British Horseracing Authority, I’ve been with the BHA for 18 years so it’ll be a very different perspective of things on raceday. It’s my first Town Plate and it has been a lifelong ambition to ride in the race. Coming from Melton Mowbray, my main passion is trail hunting and throughout the winter I can regularly be seen out, in varying degrees of control, on former racehorses. I am incredibly grateful to Laura Morgan, her staff and the Morgan family for their support and encouragement in preparing for the Town Plate.

Horses have always been a big part of my life, I began riding as a child almost before I could walk. I’m on a horse most early mornings, either exercising the Household Cavalry mounts in Hyde Park, or in Lambourn where I ride out for the trainer Jamie Osborne. As the royal editor for The Sunday Times with a keen interest in the sport of Kings and Queens, I loved the idea of taking part in the Newmarket Town Plate with its royal history dating back to King Charles II. The race will be an immense challenge on every level, and also a huge privilege to ride on the beautiful Newmarket course. 58

I’m currently studying Equine Veterinary Nursing at Hartpury University, about to go into my final year. I’m taking part in the Newmarket Town Plate to enjoy a new experience with my mare, and also prove to my dad that he’s ready to retire. He might bring ancient experience, but you can’t compete with youth and fully functioning knees.

Hi my name is Abigail Thomas. I’m 19 years old, currently on my gap year, planning to go to uni in September. I’ve been given this amazing opportunity for the second time in the row to ride in the Newmarket Town plate, which I’m so excited for. I’m taking part for Clare Ellam’s amazing owner Robert P Clarke, who is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, hence our chosen Charity Prostate Cancer UK, as this is something close to our hearts. CONDITIONS OF RACECOURSE

ENTRY

TO

Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or eject from, the racecourse any person without assigning a reason. In particular, any instance of unruly behaviour, such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting, shall entitle the Racecourse Executive to expel the offending racegoer without prior notice. Racegoers must abide by any regulations including the observance of designated non-drinking areas. At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings. But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible. Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry. We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic. So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.

Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.

EMERGENCY NOTICE In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff. They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings.

FEEDBACK We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There are short contact forms available online at thejockeyclub.co.uk/ newmarket and we value your comments.

THE COURSE IS FOR HORSES Please keep off the track. The track is for horses, their jockeys and stable staff, please keep them and yourselves safe by remaining inside the barriers. Anyone trespassing on the track will be: Liable to arrest and prosecution; Ejected immediately; Banned from all future Newmarket race meetings; May face a nationwide racecourse ban.

HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTICE The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. We would request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing area and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that we do have a first aid room. Should anyone require any assistance please speak to the nearest steward.

IMPORTANT

NOTICES

NOTICES Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.

PARADE RING ACCESS In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

PHOTOGRAPHY Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the public enclosures. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without prior accreditation being obtained. HBLB PRIZE MONEY The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026. Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
