As we welcome you to the July Course once again, we are delighted to bring you an exciting evening of summer racing in the beautiful surroundings of this unique and much-loved venue.
Evening fixtures at the July Course have a special atmosphere of their owncompetitive action on the track, a relaxed and sociable setting, and the perfect opportunity to enjoy racing in the summer sunshine before the entertainment continues long after the final race. Tonight’s card promises a compelling programme of contests as the Flat season continues to gather pace.
Today we also celebrate Dereham, a horse who has gone on to win The July Course’s longest race not once, not twice, but three times now for John Berry. A fantastic achievement for all involved. You can read more about Dereham on page 37
We are pleased that this evening’s racing is sponsored by Zyn, John Banks Group, Air Charter Service, Boodles, Debenhams, Turners of Soham and the EBF, whose valued support is greatly appreciated. You can visit both Zyn and John Banks Group’s pop-up stand near the Premier Entrance 2 throughout the evening. We would also like to thank Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, for their continued sponsorship of our Owners’ and Trainers’ facility.
After racing, the excitement continues as we welcome Basement Jaxx for what promises to be a fantastic live performance. Their energy and iconic sound are sure to provide a memorable soundtrack to a superb summer evening here at Newmarket.
On behalf of everyone at Newmarket Racecourses, I wish all owners, trainers and jockeys the very best of luck this evening, and thank you for joining us for what promises to be an enjoyable and vibrant night at the July Course.
Best wishes,
Sophie Able

S = Horse slipped
r = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race
d = Disqualified
Bold form
figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races
How the experts rate the horse’s chances:
2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse.
3. Timeform view and TFR rating
Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.
Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.
6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey
7. Saddlecloth number
8. Horse’s name
9. Days since the horse last run
10. Horse’s age
11. Jockey’s weight (stone and lbs)
12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam)
13. Horse’s owner
14. Horse’s breeder
15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB)
16. Draw – position of the horse in the starting stalls
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

You might ask why the 23rd June 2022 is such an important date in our history? ItwasthedaythatKhabyLamefinallydethronedCharliD’Amelioasthemostfollowed TikTokstar,‘RunningUpThatHill’byKateBushwasnumber1,makingKatetheoldest femalesingertohaveanumber1,theBearalsopremieredonHulathisdaybutitiswhat happenedatabout4.59pmontheJulyCoursethatisfarmoreimportanttothisstory.
Dereham trained by John Berry and owned by his wife Emma and ridden by Harry Davis crossed the line first in the Hybrid Software Group Handicap a length and a quarter ahead of Ghadbbaan Dereham was making his 18th start and this was his second victory. The race was a Class 5 for horses rated 0-75 but it had a unique feature: it is the only race run over 2miles on the July Course that season
John has been training in Newmarket since 1995, as well as being a trainer he is a successful breeder and is passionate about Newmarket Indeed, he has been a Newmarket councilor and served as the town’s mayor in 2015 and 2016 His wife Emma describes herself as ‘general dogsbody; in charge of sausage sandwiches’ but she is in fact an award-winning journalist and is chair of the British EBF, sits on the BHA’s Flat Pattern Committee, and is a British Horseracing Hall of Fame panelist.
We need to fast forward to 29th June 2023 and The Join RacingTV Now Handicap, when Dereham was again ridden by Harry Davies. He had run five times since his victory, without success, and was a relatively unconsidered 17/2 shot. But again, this time at about 5.33pm, he crossed the famous July Course Winning Line in first place, this time only a neck clear of Capone He had remarkably, again, won the only 2m race on the July Course.
Winning the same race twice is already an achievement worth mention but what happened next is even more remarkable. Dereham ran in the race again in 2024! But this time having looked the likely winner at the 2 furlong pole he faded under Hollie Doyle to finish 5th. John and Emma would not be deterred by this performance from the 8-year-old and they took some to freshen him up before he ran with credit at Yarmouth , encouraging them the spark was still there.
We have now arrived at Thursday, 26th June 2025 and the Boodles Handicap, again the only race to be run over 2miles on the July Course. Dereham, ridden by Saffie Osborne lined up amongst a competitive field of seven. Dereham was held up in rear but went clear in the final furlong to win by a massive 6 lengths The scenes in the Winners Enclosure as he returned to John and Emma Berry will live long the memories of those privileged to have been there.
Today, we celebrate the achievement of Dereham winning the same race three times by naming the race in his honour He is a remarkable horse, having now run on 40 occasions, with 5 wins and 4 seconds What a tremendous advert he is for his sire Sir Percy and his trainer John and owner Emma

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.
We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings
But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.
Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.
We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.
Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.
In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings
We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There are short contact forms available online at thejockeyclub.co.uk/ newmarket and we value your comments

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirementswhilstyouareatNewmarket Racecourses. We would request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing area and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that we do have a first aid room Should anyone require any assistance please speak to the nearest steward
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post

Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026
Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
