SPONSORS WELCOME

On behalf of everyone at Betfred I would like to wish you a very warm welcome to Newmarket for The Betfred Guineas Festival.

Last year Betfred became the first ever company to sponsor all five British Classics, and I’m delighted to be supporting all five races once again

British horse racing is undoubtedly the best in the world, and I will indeed be a very proud spectator this weekend here at Newmarket

As well as putting the British Classics back on the map, I also want to reinvigorate the Triple Crown and therefore, once again, I am offering a two-million-pound bonus if any horse can win this year’s Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and the Betfred St Leger

Fifty-six years has been far too long to wait for a repeat of Nijinsky’s outstanding feat.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who helps make these days so special, the management and staff of Newmarket Racecourse, who have made Betfred feel so welcome, Jockey Club Racecourses, ITV Racing, Racing TV, and never forgetting you, the racegoer.

I hope you all win a few quid off the bookies but most importantly, have a fantastic day and enjoy the 2026 Betfred Guineas Festival

Enjoy the racing and be lucky.

Fred

WELCOME TO

A warm welcome to the Rowley Mile and the first day of the Betfred Guineas Festival. We are looking forward to three fantastic days, along with a wide range of off-track entertainment to suit everyone.

I would like to begin by thanking our title sponsor, Betfred, for their generous support across all three days of the Festival We are excited to see the Betfred Triple Crown Bonus return for 2026, with £2 million on offer to anyone who wins the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred Derby and Betfred St Leger.

We are also extremely grateful to Darley, JCB, Pertemps, and Close Brothers for their valued contributions to today’s card Throughout the season, we extend our thanks to the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money, and to Al Basti Equiworld for their continued support of our Owners and Trainers facility.

This afternoon features seven exciting races, headlined by the Group 2 Betfred Jockey Club Stakes, run over one mile and two furlongs. As an early-season test for leading middle-distance performers, the race boasts an impressive roll of honour, including Al Kazeem, Defoe, and Hurricane Lane

Looking ahead, we are excited to be hosting the first two Classics of the season over the weekend. The Betfred 2000 Guineas and Betfred 1000 Guineas mark the start of the turf season and will feature several exciting competitors from the UK, Ireland and France A limited number of Grandstand & Paddock tickets remain available for Saturday, with tickets for all enclosures still available for Sunday.

I hope you all have a wonderful time here in Newmarket, and I wish all horses and their connections the very best of luck

EARTH SHOT has the potential for considerable improvement on the back of her eye-catching debut second and should prove hard to beat for William Haggas. The main threat may come from newcomer Velvet Vega, particularly if the betting vibes are strong given the yard has been mopping up in similar races in recent weeks. Malika is a likely improver for last year’s winning owner/trainer

EACH-WAY BETTING TERMS

5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd

8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd

Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd

Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th

Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th

History of Newmarket

Although humankind has raced horses since the dawn of civilisation – racing was an eventattheancientGreekOlympiads, forexample–itisonlyinrelativelyrecenthistory that it has been staged on an organised basis. In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole, the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain, became concerned at the popularity of racing and the level of malpractice in the sport resulting from gambling. As a result, Walpole’s government introduced laws on minimum prize money values and weights to be carried in races. The new laws proved ineffectual in its efforts to make racing less popular but it did have an impact on a group of racing enthusiasts who, fearing further government interference, came together in the coffee houses of London to form their own regulatory body for racing And so, in 1750 The Jockey Club emerged Despite its name, The Jockey Club was not made up of jockeys but more members of high society – it was an 18th Century tradition that members of trades and professions were referred to by a description of their occupation – so what Mr Justice Hangem was to the judiciary, those connected to the racing would be known as Mr Jockie (the old spelling of Jockey) followed by surname. For example, an early member of The Jockey Club was Captain Richard Vernon – known in horseracing circles as “Mr Jockie Vernon”. The early activities of The Jockey Club were centred on the Star & Garter tavern on London’s Pall Mall, before it established its first formal London headquarters in Old Bond Street

While The Jockey Club was formally established and headquartered in London, Newmarket had emerged as the pre-eminent venue for horseracing in Great Britain under the dynasty of the House of Stuart In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land and built a coffee house in the Suffolk town, a building which still exists today and has been beautifully restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket was strengthened by the activities of one of its 19th Century members, Lord George Bentinck

It was Bentinck who provided the funds which enabled The Jockey Club to purchase the freehold of the land where The Jockey Club Rooms now stand. As the owner as a large expanse of Newmarket Heath, Bentinck turned acres of scrubland over to grass and purchased territory adjacent to it to establish the gallops which still exist to this day. The link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club remains as strong as ever to this day. The historic Jockey Club Rooms, which were rebuilt and expanded in the 20th Century, house one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world and serve as accommodation for visiting members of The Jockey Club as well as being available to members of the public on a commercial basis. The Jockey Club also operates the two racecourses in Newmarket – the Rowley Mile and the July Course - operates and maintains the gallops in the town under the banner of Jockey Club Estates and also runs The National Stud, a renowned and highly-regarded centre of breeding excellence.

The connection between Newmarket and the horse is one of great antiquity. Queen Boadicea of the Iceni founded a Royal stud at Exning in the years following the death of Jesus Christ. Refusing to surrender to the Romans in 60AD Queen Boadicea took her own life by poisoning, leaving behind a legacy of a section of heathland south of Exning That heathland contained six miles of earthwork fortifications which in time became to be referred to as the Devil’s Dyke It was more than 1,000 years after the death of Queen Boadicea that Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” on land just south of Exning he had acquired from the marriage dowry of his bride Cassandra d’I’Isle. The “New Market” developed into the town of Newmarket, which saw its population increase substantially in 1227 as people settled there to escape the plague. In the 17th Century Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I and he moved the Royal court to the town for a time and built a palace. It was James’s courtiers who first raced horses on Newmarket Heath, with the first match race recorded as having taken place on March 8th 1622 Newmarket was further developed by James’s son Charles I who erected the first Grandstand on Newmarket Heath and by his grandson Charles II On his restoration to the throne in 1660, Charles II built a new palace in Newmarket which included a secret passage to the home of his mistress Nell Gwynn. The “Merry Monarch” was a proficient rider and won the first running of the Town Plate – a unique contest for amateur riders which exists to this day – on October 14th 1671.

THE BETFRED JOCKEY CLUB STAKES

RACE DESCRIPTION: For four-year-olds and above, this one and a half mile contest is a Group 2 and will attract some of the highest-quality middle distance horses around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty.

STILLTO COME AT

As we look to tomorrow, will Oisin Murphy retain the 2000 Guineas on Oxagon or can George Boughey become the youngest Classic winner with Bow Echo?

Step into an unforgettable Bank Holiday weekend at Newmarket, where world-class racing meets an electric festival atmosphere designed for everyone to enjoy.

Across both days, the Garden Enclosure transforms into a lively family hub, packed with entertainment for younger racegoers. From bouncy castles and inflatable slides to face painting and a mesmerising bubble artist, it’s the perfect space for families to relax, play, and be part of the action in a vibrant, welcoming setting.

Beyond this, the event comes alive with energy across multiple social spaces. The Betfred Sports Zone offers interactive fun with football, rugby, golf and F1 simulators, alongside the chance to test your skills against darts legends Keith Deller and Colin Lloyd Live music from James Riley keeps the atmosphere building throughout the day, creating a buzzing focal point between races.

The Hyperion Lawn acts as the heart of the social scene, blending great food, drinks, and live acoustic performances from Guitar on the Couch As the racing concludes, the energy lifts even higher with standout postrace performances—funk, soul and pop from Shuffle on Saturday, and crowd-pleasing rock and pop from Arcade Sunset on Sunday—delivering a memorable festival-style finish to each day.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY TO RACECOURSE

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.

We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings

But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.

Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.

We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.

Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.

EMERGENCY NOTICE

In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings

HBLB PRIZE MONEY

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026

Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
