WELCOME TO

A warm welcome to the July Course for the second day of the Debenhams July Festival, Festival Friday, headlined by a top-level contest in the form of the Group One Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Falmouth Stakes.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tattersalls, Weatherbys, Debenhams and Jockey Club Estates for their sponsorship of today’s card We are also extremely grateful to our betting partner Betway for their generous support across the three days

The Group One Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Falmouth Stakes, run over a mile, has long attracted some of the finest fillies and mares to race on the July Course. Past winners include champions such as Soviet Song and Goldikova and Nashwa on the roll of honours list The race provides one of the season’s earliest and most significant opportunities for the leading three-year-old fillies to take on their older counterparts at the highest level.

We are also grateful to our headline partner, Debenhams, who are supporting us across all three days of the July Festival

Head down to the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure for Darts with the Stars, where racegoers can compete with some of the leading darts players, including Keith Deller, Russ Bray and Colin Lloyd. We also encourage racegoers to join us after racing to enjoy a 75-minute live set of feel-good tunes from Shakermaker. Please look at the racecourse map further in this racecard for locations of all activity.

Looking ahead, we have another outstanding day of racing tomorrow as the July Festival concludes with July Cup Day. The Group One Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup is one of the most prestigious sprint contests in racing, with its roll of honour featuring many of the finest sprinters of the modern era. Often regarded as the championship sprint of the British Flat racing season, success in the race is a powerful claim to being crowned Europe’s leading sprinter. Tickets for tomorrow are still available to purchase on the gate

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

Beyond the racing, I hope you can explore the town of Newmarket—the historic and global headquarters of our sport. From horses training on the Heath at dawn to independent businesses on the high street, it is a unique community where heritage is woven into daily life We hope you enjoy experiencing the history and community spirit that make our home so special and wish every horse and connection the very best of luck

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A horse’s weight is approximately half a tonne

12. FUEL CONSUMPTION

A horse uses 35,000 calories per day, whereas a human adult male is advised to eat 2,500

RACE ONE

LAUREATE CROWN wasn’t helped by a clear track bias in the Britannia, but he fared second best of those who raced on the far side so it’s probably best to mark up his effort. On target at Wolverhampton and Sandown prior, he’s still a horse with plenty of potential and can show his true self Princling wasn’t beaten far in the Golden Gates Stakes and is respected, and so is Decade Of Time having notched up a brace of novice wins in recent months

RACE TWO

A confident vote goes to LIBERTANGO, who took her career total to two from two with a smooth success in the Albany It’s quite possible that most of these could find significant improvement, including Carlisle winner Ruby Moon who has the assistance of Ryan Moore, but even so, George Boughey’s filly looks to be a cut above at this stage of her career Senorita Bonita finished second in the Queen Mary and is the most likely danger

RACE THREE

WINE DARK SEA followed up his Ascot triumph by recording an even easier win in the Cumberland Plate at Carlisle, and a 6lb penalty isn’t expected to be enough to stop the progressive son of Ulysses from completing his hat trick This does represent a steep rise in class, so Valedictory and Goblet Of Fire might be able to pick up the pieces should the selection not come up to scratch.

RACE FOUR

Four times a winner at the highest level, PRECISE landed the Irish 1,000 Guineas prior to winning the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot A filly out of the top drawer, she looks to have an easier opportunity here and is taken to provide Aidan O’Brien with his first winner of this contest since 2017 Fresh from her Group 2 victory at Royal Ascot, Blue Bolt faces a tougher task conceding weight to the three-year-olds, but 1000 Guineas third Venetian Lace could prove a live threat on that form

RACE FIVE

ACTING LADY finished a close third in a tight three-runner affair here a fortnight ago The Godolphin filly will have learned plenty from that experience and looks her yard’s first string ahead of the newcomer Sorrengail Pure Majesty is a half-sister to six winners, including the smart Sky Majesty, and the Haggas inmate is worth noting on debut, while Desert Sands drops in class after finishing midfield in the Albany and could be thereabouts.

RACE SIX

EMPEROR SPIRIT’s sole turf success came in this race off 3lb higher 12 months ago and after finishing a close-up second at Beverley recently, Michael Keady’s gelding looks primed to repeat the dose. He will have a host of challengers, though, including Twilight Calls, who went close to completing a double at Yarmouth Stable companion Rapper’s Delight ought to be on the premises, and Tatterstall and Our Cody should be capable of getting involved as well

RACE SEVEN

As is the case with many, Ryan Moore was able to get a good tune out of SIERRA SANDS last time He kept on well to outstay the two market protagonists over 6f here so, with a return to further in his favour, a 4lb rise may well underestimate the Sands Of Mali colt William Buick gets aboard Windsor scorer Calling A Star for the first time, which looks notable, but there are plenty more with chances, including Doncaster one-two Toastmaster and Flight Control.

THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE STAKES

The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes takes place over six furlongs and is the fillies’ equivalent of the July Stakes, which takes place over the same distance for colts and geldings on day one of The July Festival.

First staged in 1947, it was known as the Cherry Hinton Stakes up to and including 2012 before gaining its current title in 2013 in honour of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Formerly a Group Three race, it was upgraded to Group Two status in 1996

Over the years, it has provided a number of future Classic winners including Sweet Solera (1960), Pia (1996), Mysterious (1972), Diminuendo (1987), who all went on to land the Oaks at Epsom Downs. In addition, Sweet Solera (1960), Pia (1966), Mysterious (1972), Sayyedati (1992), Attraction (2003) and Mawj (2022) all won the 1000 Guineas on the Rowey Mile the following spring

As well as Attraction and Mawj, another significant winner this century is Arabian Queen (2014), who went on to cause a 50-1 upset when defeating Derby victor Golden Horn in the 2015 Juddmonte International at York Frankie Dettori and Walter Swinburn are the leading jockeys with five winners each, while Sir Henry Cecil and Sir Michael Stoute share leading trainer honours with four victories apiece

JOCKEY: CLIFFORD LEE

OWNER: TONYBLOOM&IANMCALEAVY Venetian Sun was representing Karl Burke who landed this with Dandalla after winning the Albany in 2020 and this filly followed suit, making a perfect 3-3 start to her career

Previous Listed winner Argentine Tango broke sharply and, under David Allan, set the early pace. Clifford Lee was content to settle the heavily backed favourite towards the rear of the field, where she usually thrives.

Charging down the centre of the course, Venetian Sun travelled strongest before taking the lead inside the final half-furlong, appearing to have the race in safe keeping. However, the Ed Walker-trained Royal Fixation produced a late surge, forcing the favourite to dig deep The classy filly responded gamely, finding enough to hold her rival by a neck and justify the short price at the top of the market

Rowley Mile War Secrets Reawakened

A Place Where Champions Race & Secrets Still Lie Beneath The Turf Newmarket’s Rowley Mile is usually seen at its most electric during the Flat season, when the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas define the sport’s early Classics and the best horses in the world take centre stage. It is a place of speed, pressure and precision, where history is made in seconds on turf that has hosted generations of champions.

Beneath that surface lies a second story—one that, until recently, remained largely out of sight.

Between 1939 and 1942, the Rowley Mile was not only a racecourse; it became a covert Royal Air Force base. From this ground, 138 Squadron and 161 Squadron of the RAF’s Special Duties operations launched secret missions into occupied Europe. The work was part of Britain’s hidden wartime effort to support resistance networks behind enemy lines.

Aircraft departed Newmarket on night flights into France, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, carrying agents, supplies and equipment into territories controlled by enemy forces These were not routine sorties. They were flown in darkness, often alone, and frequently without navigational aids that pilots could fully rely on Every take-off carried uncertainty. Every return was earned.

For decades, this role remained known only in specialist history. Now, that legacy has been formally brought back to the very ground where it once began

A Lysander Returns To The Place It Once Departed From

To mark this extraordinary chapter in the racecourse’s history, a historic Westland Lysander flew over the Rowley Mile before landing on the airstrip, bringing one of the war’s most distinctive aircraft back to its origin story. The Westland Lysander was designed specifically for missions like these Built for short take-off and landing, it could operate from rough fields in occupied territory, slipping in and out of darkness to deliver or retrieve agents in complete secrecy.

The return of the Lysander to Newmarket created a rare moment where the landscape, the aircraft and the history aligned again The same skies once used for wartime departures were filled once more by the machine that defined those operations

Anne Alexandre and Daisy Vincent, descendants of those connected to the wartime missions, stand alongside the historic Westland Lysander

A Story Now Marked In The Heart Of The Racecourse

Alongside the historic fly-past, a permanent blue plaque and information board stand at the entrance to the Millennium Grandstand The installation, delivered in partnership with Secret WW2, formally recognises the Rowley Mile’s role in RAF Special Duties operations

Placed where thousands of racegoers pass through every season, it ensures this story is no longer hidden in archives or specialist memory It sits within the everyday life of the racecourse itself A place known for sporting drama now also holds a permanent reminder of a different kind of risk, carried out in silence and shadow. Families, Memory And The Human Thread Behind The Missions

The commemoration brought together historians, local families, and descendants of those involved in the operations, including relatives of French Resistance operatives and servicemen who trained at the Rowley Mile. Their presence highlights the immense risks taken on the ground as well as in the air, bringing the narrative back to the people behind it

These enduring family links add another layer to the story, connecting Newmarket not only to wartime strategy and operations, but to individual lives shaped by them. Together, they reflect how this history stretches far beyond Suffolk, into occupied Europe and across wartime networks built on secrecy, trust and courage.

For The Jockey Club, this commemoration speaks to something deeper than simple remembrance.

It is about the stewardship of places that carry more than one history at a time The Rowley Mile is not only a sporting venue; it is a landscape shaped over centuries by very different uses, each leaving its mark on the same ground

Bringing this wartime story into public view reflects a commitment to ensuring that heritage is not hidden, simplified or separated, but understood as part of a continuous living narrative. It also reinforces the idea that racecourses are cultural spaces as well as sporting ones, embedded in national memory as much as sporting achievement

We do not just inherit places. We inherit their stories, and the responsibility to tell them.

Newmarket Racecourses would like to express its gratitude to the Secret WW2 Learning Network and the Shuttleworth Collection for their invaluable partnership in bringing this history to light.

TATTERSALLS FALMOUTH STAKES

ROLLOF HONOUR

The 2025 renewal produced a deserved Group 1 breakthrough for Cinderella’s Dream, who travelled strongly before asserting late under William Buick to give connections their first success in the Tattersalls Falmouth.

The previous Dahlia winner on the Rowley Mile in May proved at the top of her game, despite this looking wide-open at the furlong pole. She quickened up smartly where it mattered most to score by half a length.

January, who had managed to bag the stands side rail, ran with a lot of credit again to finish second, while Crimson Advocate, who had already beat the winner previously, was possibly on the wrong side of the track but put in another fine effort.

ROSARIO isn’t the easiest to win with but he’s been given a chance by the handicapper and he caught the eye when finishing with running left when fifth at Windsor on his most recent outing 18 days ago He could be worth chancing in a wide-open affair with the booking of William Buick catching the eye. Rhythm N Hooves and Rapper’s Delight are others to consider, with last year’s winner Emperor Spirit and Tatterstall others to factor in.

Lots with chances but TOASTMASTER is thriving for the switch to Michael Herrington and can make light of a 2lb rise and follow up his stylish Doncaster success with Oisin Murphy in the saddle for the first time. Kimbara heads the list of dangers on the back of a promising Yarmouth third, with his old Sandown rival Lion of Mali also likely to play a prominent role.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY TO RACECOURSE

Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or eject from, the racecourse any person without assigning a reason In particular, any instance of unruly behaviour, such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting, shall entitle the Racecourse Executive to expel the offending racegoer without prior notice Racegoers must abide by any regulations including the observance of designated non-drinking areas

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.

We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings

But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.

Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.

We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.

Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.

EMERGENCY NOTICE

In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings

HBLB PRIZE MONEY

The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has allocated £77.1m in prizemoney for 2026

Since 2000 HBLB has invested £1.5bn in prize money to support the British horseracing industry

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
