The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE –FAREWELL AND THANK YOU

A very famous name will be absent from the trainers’ roster next year with Sir Michael Stoute having announced on September 10th that he will be retiring at the end of the 2024 Flat turf season.
The Barbados-born Stoute took out his training licence in 1972 and hit the ground running From his base in Newmarket, he went on to claim 10 Flat trainers’ championships and saddled the winners of 16 English Classics among his total of just under 4,200 UK winners.
Those 16 English Classic winners included Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas on five occasions with Shadeed (1985), Doyoun (1988), Entrepreneur (1997), King’s Best (2000) and Golan (2001), plus the 1000 Guineas with Musical Bliss (1989) and Russian Rhythm (2003).
Other Group One victories on the Rowley Mile include the Dewhurst Stakes (Ajdal 1986), Cheveley Park Stakes (Marwell 1980, Gay Gallanta 1994 & Regal Rose 2000) and Sun Chariot Stakes (Triple First 1977, Kartajana 1990, Peeress 2005 & Integral 2014).
The now 78-year-old Stoute was equally at home on the July Course, where he landed the feature July Cup three times (Marwell 1981, Green Desert 1986 & Ajdal 1987) plus the Falmouth Stakes on six occasions (Royal Heroine 1983, Sonic Lady 1986 & 1987, Lovers Knot 1998, Integral 2014 & Veracious 2019).
Everyone at Newmarket would like to wish Sir Michael the very best for his retirement and would like to remind him he will always be remembered and warmly welcomed back at any time at his ‘home’ racecourse.

PLAY SMARTER
THUNDER STAR has failed to fire on all cylinders in both starts since returning from a break in September but she’s down to an attractive mark and is an appealing alternative to likely favourite Marching Mac. It’s rare for sprint handicaps to be won by margins such as those via which the latter has scored of late and he is a much-respected main danger Bang On The Bell is third choice ahead of Kiss And Run and Level Up

Magic Mild attempted to make every yard of the running when fading into third at Salisbury in September, so another prominent role is forecast. However, the vote goes to KODILICIOUS, who has been far from disgraced in nursery company in Ireland of late and she looks capable of landing a race of this nature. It Ain’t Two arrives on the back of a solid second in the Rockingham at York and is another to consider TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.KODILICIOUS (IRE) 2.MAGIC MILD 3.ITAIN’TTWO

PLAY SMARTER
Things conspired against MONTEZUMA on his recent Kempton debut and given his pedigree and connections, it would come as no surprise whatsoever were he a different proposition this time. Sixtygeesbaby also shaped nicely on debut and he can improve, with Jolly Roger perhaps the pick of the newcomers.

PLAY SMARTER
CLAXTON BAY has been bang in form lately and, while this is a step up in grade, he’s fancied to put up another bold showing. Dembe is an obvious threat in that he scored off the same mark at Kempton last time, but he’s seemingly not as effective on turf Buy The Dip should give another good account.

At Prestige Car Sales, we know a winner when we see one—just ask Nick. While he’s great at spotting a thoroughbred and quick off the mark even he had to admit that our Ferrari takes the biscuit when it comes to speed. With the iconic prancing horse under the hood, this Ferrari is built for performance with style, leaving everything else at the starting gate.
Saddle up at Prestige because when it comes to cars, Nick knows the field from Aston Martin's to Ferrari's and everything in between.

THE NEWMARKET
CHALLENGE
WHIP
The Challenge Whip is a unique event in the British racing calendar. Such is the heritage of the race, it has a direct link to the origins of Flat racing in Newmarket
Originally, the winner of the Challenge Whip was awarded an actual whip as a trophy, which now hangs above the fireplace in the Coffee Rooms in the Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street.
The whip dates back to the reign of King Charles II (1660-1685) who is understood to have carried it in races himself There is also evidence that the whip’s present wristband and lash consist of hair taken from the great horse Eclipse.
In recent years, winners of the Challenge Whip have been:
2023 First Officer (Bryan Hirst & Jane Chapple-Hyam)
2022 Super Chief (Mr A E Oppenheimer)
2021 Rhebus Road (Mr T Syder & Mr D Burke)
2020 Zoran (Lord Derby)
2019 Felix (Fittocks Stud)
2018 Maori Bob (P Philipps, C Philipps, T Redman)
2017 Brief Visit (Cliveden Stud)
2016 Nigel (Normandie Stud Ltd)
2015 Golden Jubilee (Mrs J K Powell)
2014 Inspector Norse (Mr J C Smith)
2013 Gone Dutch (Mr J Richmond-Watson)
2012 Odin (Mr J C Smith)
2011 Vita Lika (The Hon P and Mrs F Stanley)
2010 Scottish Boogie (Mr J C Smith)
Today, the winning owner will be presented with a magnificent bronze sculpture to keep
Three centuries of heritage, one 2024 victor.
