The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

Retraining OfRacehorses (RoR) Parade

An RoR parade will be taking place today, on Day 2 of the Dubai Future Champions Festival.

Horses will enter the pre-parade ring at 12 noon before entering the Parade Ring at 12.30pm. The parade will last approximately 10 minutes.

The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).

The parade features several horses that found their new owners and vocation via the Godolphin Rehoming scheme. The parade includes Blair House who is now the ambassador for the Godolphin Lifetime Care programme and will be taking part in community and hospital visits.

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR:

• Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities.

• Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses.

• Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing.

• Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care.

RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

For more information visit: ror.org.uk

Horses will enter the pre-parade ring at 12 noon before the parade in the Parade Ring at 12.30pm.

1. AFRICAN JAZZ - RIDDEN BYABI SOLE

9-year-old gelding by Cape Cross, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby Breeder: Godolphin

African Jazz (Jazz) ran eight times on the flat, winning twice, before he was retired from racing in 2019 Abi Sole acquired African Jazz through Godolphin Rehoming in October 2022, and the pair are currently competing in the RoR Showing Series, going RoR Champion at the Royal Norfolk Show, and placed third in the Novice Championship at Aintree, and fourth at the Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden final at Hickstead back in June this year Jazz also competes successfully in British Eventing classes up to 90cm, coming 8th and winning on his last two outings. Abi says: “Jazz is a dream to own and retrain. He is so kind and biddable, he really is a pleasure to ride and be around. He absolutely adores our 4-year-old son and he him, they are frequently found cuddling each other!”

2. ART DU VAL – RIDDEN BYABI CROUCH

8-year-old gelding by No Nay Never, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby

Breeder: D J and Mrs. Deer

Art Du Val, (Archie) came home to Abi Crouch in September 2023, he fitted in straight away from walking off the trailer He is super chilled in most environments, enjoys his work, turnout and he certainly loves his food. We went to our first dressage competition after two weeks, just to see how was away from home and he put in a lovely intro test which got us placed. We have been out for lessons, XC hires, RoR clinics and camps. In August we did our first one day event and had a go in the showing ring too, but we both prefer jumping. Our best day so far has been filming with Godolphin for their Lifetime Care video Art Du Val

to show how good he is in the school, hacking solo and what it is like to take a

from Godolphin that has been started so well. Abi says, “I’m super excited for the future with him and to get back out eventing next season!”

loves the camera, it was lovely
horse

3. BLAIR HOUSE – RIDDEN BY SOPHY STANFIELD

11-year-old gelding by Pivotal, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby

Breeder: Darley

Blair House is a Group 1 winner who was raised on Godolphin’s Woodpark Stud in Ireland and went on to be trained by Charlie Appleby throughout his 19-race career across three countries – Great Britain, Dubai and Australia. Blair House made a winning debut at Nottingham as a three-year-old and went on to compete in “top end” Handicaps including a commendable second in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot He continued to improve to put in a career best performance to win Meydan’s Group 1 Jebel Hatta as a 5-year-old. He also ran some terrific races in defeat, the most noteworthy was when travelling to Australia when he was runner-up to Saeed bin Suroor’s BENBATL in Caulfield’s Ladbrokes Stakes (Group 1) beaten by a whisker He retired as a 6-year-old having amassed almost half a million pounds in prize money. He has now taken on the role as a flagbearer for Godolphin’s lifetime care programme and will be making visits to local schools, hospitals and hospices as part of this role as well as taking part in RoR parades at racecourses.

4. SAINT GREGOIRE - RIDDEN BY LOUISE ROBSON

13-year-old gelding by Le Havre, formerly trained by J-C Rouget and Saeed bin Suroor

Breeder: S A Franklin Finance

Saint Gregoire (Greg) was originally trained and raced in France, where we won six times over one mile, he came to Louise Robson via the Godolphin Rehoming Programme. Louise says he has a natural talent for ‘dressage flare’ They are currently competing at Medium/Advanced Medium level. Greg has won the RoR medium regional title in 2023 and 2024 and won the RoR National title at Medium in 2023 and the RoR Special Open (open to those competing advanced medium and above) title in 2024 We have high hopes for Greg to progress to the higher levels of dressage as he shows natural ability and talent. Louise says, “Greg also loves performing in demonstrations, hacking at home and playing with his friends in the field with his party trick being sticking his tongue out at people”

5. SCARF – RIDDEN BY BEVERLY POOLEY

16-year-old gelding by Lonhro, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor

Breeder: Woodlands Stud

Scarf has had a varied life since retiring from racing. He has competed mainly as a show horse winning numerous championships, both ridden and In-hand. He was champion racehorse two years running at the East Anglia Horse Show, Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden winner Suffolk Show in 2023. He was placed seventh overall in the Tattersalls RoR Ridden Veteran Final at the Jockey Club RoR National Championships in August 2024 Scarf has also turned his hoof at side-saddle, dressage and now formation riding. He has also started jumping which he loves. Beverly says, “what he enjoys most of all is hacking and hanging out with his best mate Charlie a 12hh Welshie”

6.

SECRET NUMBER – RIDDEN BY HANNAH THOMPSON

14-year-old gelding by Raven’s Pass, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor

Breeder: Darley

Since joining our family, Secret Number (Sid) has become the family pony. He is ridden by myself, my partner and our son Thomas. Apart from RoR parades Sid has also taken part in a range of RoR competitions, from showing and showjumping to hunter trials and fun rides. His most notable success so far has been qualifying for the 2024 Tattersalls RoR Amateur Flat final at Hickstead, where he was placed 3rd in the amateur flat final.

7. SKYSURFERS – RIDDEN BY RACHEL OVENS

18-year-old gelding by E Dubai, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor

Breeder: Darley

Skysurfers won 4 out of his 10 races earning 581k prize money. In 2011 he won both the Firebreak Stakes and Godolphin Mile breaking the track record in Dubai under Jockey Frankie Detorri before retiring. He was acquired by Claire through the Godolphin rehoming programme in March 2013. Initially after retraining he turned his hoof to some low-level eventing but in the last couple of years concentrated mainly on dressage with rider/trainer Rachel Ovens and his owner Claire. Since starting affiliated dressage in 2020 he has gone from strength to strength, participating in both area and regional championships at BD and then in September he won the RoR Open Elementary Dressage Championships at Blenheim. The plan this winter is to do some show jumping and Arena Eventing with him. Claire says: “At home he is a real character, very clever and quick to learn but he is also very opinionated and loves being a prankster, often making Rachel and myself the recipients of his cheeky ways, he is very much adored in his home for life”

DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES

Today sees the Group One highlight of the Dubai Future Champions Festival take place – the Darley Dewhurst Stakes The seven-furlong contest is regarded by most as Britain’s best race for two-year-olds.

Aidan O’Brien has won the Dewhurst Stakes a joint-record eight times, including last year with City Of Troy His trio of contenders this year are headed by THE LION IN WINTER. A son of Sea The Stars, The Lion In Winter is unbeaten in two starts having followed up his debut success at the Curragh with victory in the Group Three Acomb Stakes at York

The master of Ballydoyle also saddles EXPANDED, who made a winning debut at the Curragh a week ago, and outsider ROCK OF CASHEL who has been well-beaten in his two previous starts in Pattern race company.

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby has landed the Dewhurst Stakes twice in recent years courtesy of Pinatubo (2019) and Native Trail (2021) He is two-handed in 2024 with SHADOW OF LIGHT and ANCIENT TRUTH. Shadow Of Light is already a Group One winner on the Rowley Mile this autumn following his triumph in the six-furlong Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes a fortnight ago If successful again today, he would become only the third horse to complete the Middle Park-Dewhurst double in the last 50 years following Diesis (1982) and US Navy Flag (2017) Ancient Truth comes into the race unbeaten in three starts, with his most significant victory coming last time out in the Group Two Superlative Stakes on the July Course.

Runner-up to Ancient Truth in the Superlative Stakes was SEAGULLS ELEVEN The son of Galileo Gold, who is owned by a group of Brighton & Hove Albion FC players, was subsequently a close third when making his Group One debut in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh last month.

LASTYEAR’S WINNER

CITY OFTROY

TRAINER: AIDAN O’BRIEN

JOCKEY: RYAN MOORE

OWNER: MAGNIER – TABOR – SMITH

The Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore connection combined once more to notch their fourth success in ten years in this contest as City Of Troy made light work of his rivals to win last year

The colt came into this contest undefeated having scored in his previous two starts, a Curragh maiden win last July which was soon followed by a six and a half length success in the Superlative Stakes on the July course here.

The Justify colt was the clear favourite coming into this contest and he showed why, proving far too strong for his rivals as he won by an impressive three and a half lengths to complete the hattrick.

RYAN MOORE

Ryan Moore will be aiming to make it five wins in nine years and today rides The Lion In Winter.

THE LION IN WINTER has been most impressive in winning both his starts so far, notably when making all in a strong renewal of the Acomb at York, and he may prove hard to peg back once again. Shadow of Light is the obvious threat having been supplemented for this after his wide margin success in the Middle Park here 2 weeks ago, while his unbeaten stablemate Ancient Truth is another to consider with the form of his Superlative win having worked out well.

THE JULY FESTIVAL 2025

E:

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE –FAREWELL AND THANK YOU

A very famous name will be absent from the trainers’ roster next year with Sir Michael Stoute having announced on September 10th that he will be retiring at the end of the 2024 Flat turf season.

The Barbados-born Stoute took out his training licence in 1972 and hit the ground running From his base in Newmarket, he went on to claim 10 Flat trainers’ championships and saddled the winners of 16 English Classics among his total of just under 4,200 UK winners.

Those 16 English Classic winners included Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas on five occasions with Shadeed (1985), Doyoun (1988), Entrepreneur (1997), King’s Best (2000) and Golan (2001), plus the 1000 Guineas with Musical Bliss (1989) and Russian Rhythm (2003).

Other Group One victories on the Rowley Mile include the Dewhurst Stakes (Ajdal 1986), Cheveley Park Stakes (Marwell 1980, Gay Gallanta 1994 & Regal Rose 2000) and Sun Chariot Stakes (Triple First 1977, Kartajana 1990, Peeress 2005 & Integral 2014).

The now 78-year-old Stoute was equally at home on the July Course, where he landed the feature July Cup three times (Marwell 1981, Green Desert 1986 & Ajdal 1987) plus the Falmouth Stakes on six occasions (Royal Heroine 1983, Sonic Lady 1986 & 1987, Lovers Knot 1998, Integral 2014 & Veracious 2019).

Everyone at Newmarket would like to wish Sir Michael the very best for his retirement and would like to remind him he will always be remembered and warmly welcomed back at any time at his ‘home’ racecourse.

LASTYEAR’S WINNER THE SHUNTER

TRAINER: EMMET MULLINS

JOCKEY: JAMES DOYLE

OWNER: J P McMANUS

There were 31 runners for last year’s Cesarewitch Handicap, with The Shunter coming out on top for Emmet Mullins and James Doyle.

The gelding had not been in the greatest form coming into this contest, having not won since scoring in a Sligo Maiden in May 2022. Nevertheless the ten-year-old stayed on well to get the win, despite a poor start. Biding his time he began to make steady headway through the field from around four furlongs out.

He took the lead just over a furlong out and stayed on to win, three quarters of a length ahead of Gordon Elliott’s Pied Piper in second.

WILLIE MULLINS

Willie Mullins will be looking for his fourth victory in this race and this year he enters Sea of Sands. 6/12

PLAY SMARTER

JACOVEC CAVERN tops the list after a very promising first run for Emmet Mullins at the Galway Festival. Manxman’s claims are also pretty obvious after his defeat of the progressive Warmonger (pair well clear) at Southwell last time. Sea of Sands hasn’t been seen on the Flat for over 2 years but a recent hurdle success shows his well-being and his stable’s excellent record in this affords him plenty of respect. Premiere Ligne and Irish Cesarewitch third Sixandahalf complete the shortlist.

At Prestige Car Sales, we know a winner when we see one—just ask Nick. While he’s great at spotting a thoroughbred and quick off the mark even he had to admit that our Ferrari takes the biscuit when it comes to speed. With the iconic prancing horse under the hood, this Ferrari is built for performance with style, leaving everything else at the starting gate.

Saddle up at Prestige because when it comes to cars, Nick knows the field from Aston Martin's to Ferrari's and everything in between.
