JUDDMONTE DAY

SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2023

Official Racecard £3.50

Kingman

WelcometotheRowleyMileforthefinalofthethree-dayCambridgeshirefixture, Juddmonte Day, one of the major highlights of the autumn racing season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Juddmonte, bet365, Blandford Bloodstock, and the European Breeders Fund for their generous support of today’s card. Alongside the feature, the bet365 Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap Stakes, there are three Group races for the two-year-olds, with some exciting prospects on show.

The first feature race of the day is the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes. This is a Breeders Cup “Win and You’re In” race, which means we could look forward to seeing the winner in America later this year The race also features on the “Road to Kentucky” series, as part of the trial races for the Kentucky Derby, which takes place in May 2024 Next up is the Juddmonte Cheveley Park and the Juddmonte Middle Park, two races that showcase the best of the juveniles of the season. Finally, the bet365 Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap is a true test of skill and stamina, with large numbers of horses thundering up the Rowley Mile

Away from the racing, we encourage racegoers explore our Oktoberfest area along the Boulevard, where you can find a brass quartet playing some Bavarian music. There is also an array of themed delicacies and refreshing beverages, and after racing our full 10-piece band will take to the stage to perform For those in the Garden Enclosure, make sure to head along to the bouncy castle and face painter, something for all children to enjoy.

As we move into October, we look forward to the Dubai Future Champions Festival on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October, the jewel of our autumn season, where this season’s top two-year-olds line up against each other in the aim to crown the Champion Juvenile. This fixture always holds key clues towards the QIPCO Guineas Festival, held back at the Rowley Mile in May. More information and tickets can be found at our website, www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING SATURDAY 7th OCTOBER

SUN CHARIOT DAY

This prestigious event, honoring the legendary filly Sun Chariot, is now in its 19th year of pure racing excellence It’s the magnet for the most exceptional fillies and mares in the racing world, and this year promises to be nothing short of sensational

JUDDMONTE DAY

Today is Juddmonte Day, the third and concluding day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting and widely regarded as one of the most exciting days in the Flat racing calendar.

A jewel in the crown of the Newmarket Autumn Season, there are two Group One races on offer for juveniles as well as the first leg of the traditional ‘Autumn Double’.

Juddmonte Day has developed a well-deserved reputation for highlighting stars of the future and with the first two British top level juvenile races of the year on this card, it is easy to see why. The first of them, the Group One Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes, is run over six furlongs for twoyear-old fillies Named after one of the most successful thoroughbred Stud Farms in Europe and generously sponsored by the late Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms, the race has produced numerous candidates for the following year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas The last horse to complete that double being Special Duty for French trainer Criquette Head-Maarek in 2009/2010, with this year’s winner Mawj finishing third in last year’s renewal

Its equivalent race for the boys, the Group One Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes for two-year-old colts over six furlongs, quickly follows. Like the Cheveley Park, the race is worth noting in terms of the market for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas the following May, whilst the 2018 winner Ten Sovereigns went on to win the July Cup for Aidan O’Brien the following year.

Complementing those two races is the Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes for two-year-olds over a mile, which boasts an impressive recent roll of honour which includes future Group One winners Elm Park in 2014, Roaring Lion in 2017 and the incomparable Frankel in 2010 This is one of the key races on the “Road to Kentucky”, which showcases races that often throw up runners for the famed first leg of the American Triple Crown

Away from the Group action is the bet365 Cambridgeshire, a Heritage Handicap which serves as the first leg of the traditional ‘Autumn Double’ which is completed by the Cesarewitch Heritage Handicap, held on Dubai Future Champions Weekend, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October.

There are few spectacles in sport quite like the sight of 35 runners thundering down the Rowley Mile and this nine-furlong contest is a favourite of jockeys, trainers and racegoers alike Recent winners to go on and perform at Group level include Wissahickon in 2018 and Lord North in 2019

With all the hype around the extremely short-priced favourite Flying Honours, he was unable to take the step up to this grade which left the stage open for The Foxes.

Given a patient ride by David Probert, held up in last, his tactics paid dividends as it turned into a dash two furlongs out. He made his move against the far rail to lead inside the final furlong, showing a nice turn off foot when given the green light.

Dubai Mile stayed on well for pressure to finish half a length behind in second, with the disappointing Flying Honours beaten a short head into third.

PLAY SMARTER

A mouth-watering renewal of this long-established Group 2. CAPULET stepped up considerably on last month’s promising debut win when finding only exciting stablemate Diego Velazquez too good in the Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown and has to be considered the one to beat on that form, especially with further progress on the cards. Ghostwriter defied a penalty in an excellent time at Ascot and is well worth his place in this higher grade, while Defiance is another fascinating contender

Thiswas an excellent renewal ofthe Cheveley Park Stakes, with the first five home being winners of the five Pattern races over this trip for juvenile fillies in Britian.

A race dominated by the horses travelling from across the pond in recent times, Lezoo improved again from her busy spell in June/ July to take the honours in good style.

Although slow out the stalls, Buick always kept the faith and produced a fabulous ride on the far side group to win by just under a length.

The Group two Debutante Stakes winner Meditate was unable to justify favourtism, while the pace-setting Swinalong finished a good third.

TRAINER: AIDAN O’BRIEN

JOCKEY: RYAN MOORE

OWNER: DERRICK SMITH, MAGNIER, TABOR & WESTERBERG

The 2022 renewal sawAidan O’Brien secure a 1-2 in this historic Group one, as Blackbeard tasted yet another pattern victory

A hard-fought winner of the Morny when seeing off the challenge of Persian Force, he proved his class again to add a second Group one to his impressive tally

Appreciating the quick pace to aim at courtesy of his old rival, this juvenile with plenty of speed quickly asserted when going through the gears to score by two lengths, albeit drifting right on the run in.

Stablemate The Antarctic made amends for his slow start to pick up second, while July Stakes winner Persian Force completed the podium.

SHUWARI

Oisin Murphy rides the unbeaten Shuwari who proved her ability when taking Listed success last time out.

PLAY SMARTER

RIVER TIBER was unable to go with Vandeek in the Prix Morny last time but he’d reportedly missed some work prior to that and, given how promising he looked beforehand, he’s worth a chance to reverse form with his old rival in a race that the pair may dominate The unbeaten Task Force is a big player for all that he’s stepping up markedly in grade.

The form ofthe nursery in which KEYTO COTAI was a creditable fifth at the York Ebor meeting looks very strong, with the runner-up subsequently winning a Group 3 and the third going on to land a valuable sales race She is likely to be suited by this step up to 7f and gets the nod ahead of Liv My Life, who landed a decent contest at Goodwood last time and may also benefit from this stiffer test. Miss Information is third choice, while Falling ForYou and Shin Jidai are also shortlisted.

PLAY SMARTER

A really competitive affair, with the in-form STAR OF ORION fancied to continue his good spell having held his form admirably in defeat since scoring on the July Course here in the summer Veteran Accidental Agent ran well in the Bunbury Cup and wasn’t beaten too far at Chepstow next time, so is anotherto merit consideration. Bajan Bandit is fractionallythe most appealing of the 3-y-os and he can complete the placings.
