CAMBRIDGESHIRE THURSDAY
THURSDAY 28 SEPTEMBER
OFFICIAL RACECARD £3.50
Welcome to the Rowley Mile for the first of the three-day Cambridgeshire fixture, one of the major highlights of the autumn racing season.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the European Breeders Fund, Tattersalls and Graham Budd Art & Memorabilia for their generous support across today’s card. The feature race is the Group Three Tattersalls Stakes (Registered as the Sommerville Tattersall Stakes), run over 7 furlongs for two-year-olds
It’s an early chance to see which of the juveniles stand out as we kick off the autumn season
Away from the racing, we encourage racegoers explore our Oktoberfest area along the Boulevard, where you can find a brass quartet playing some Bavarian music. There is also an array of themed delicacies and refreshing beverages. Looking ahead, we have two more days of the Cambridgeshire meeting, on Friday and Saturday, with more Group racing to come across both days. There will also be more Oktoberfest fun, with tickets still available
As we move into October, we look forward to the Dubai Future Champions Festival on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October, the jewel of our autumn season, where this season’s top two-year-olds line up against each other in the aim to crown the Champion Juvenile. This fixture always holds key clues towards the QIPCO Guineas Festival, held back at the Rowley Mile in May. More information and tickets can be found at our website, www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck
Sophie Able

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.
Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

BETTING EXPLAINED
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

PLAY SMARTER
Usually a good maiden and this looks brimming with promising colts, notably WAFEI and Ortelius, who went very close first time up Both are open to plenty of improvement and interestingly are berthed on the opposite sides of the track here, the vote going to Wafei who has the potentially favourable highest draw 1.6M yearling Duke’s Command is of obvious interest first time up for Godolphin and the betting should be informative.

Following a striking impression left on his debut at Sandown Park, Nostrum took the step up in grade in his stride to land last year’s Tattersalls Stakes (formely Registered As The Somerville Tattersall Stakes)
Before Moore even reached for the whip, he looked to have the race at his mercy, travelling powerfully through the race The son of Kingman proved his class by fending off the late challenge of Holloway Boy by one and a quarter lenghts.
Charlie Appleby and William Buick were bidding for a hat-trick of successes in this contest, but the well-fancied Victory Dance was unable to follow up on his excellent second in Group two company to finish a remote third

This looks wide open but MILITARY looked a good prospect when making a winning debut at Naas 2 weeks ago and is open to considerable progress for a yard that has plenty of fire power in this division. Eben Shaddad is another well-regarded colt from a top stable so may emerge as the biggest threat ahead of Alyanaabi, who shaped well in a hot Listed race at Ascot

Race preview from Weatherbys
The Graham Budd Art & Memorabilia Auction Handicap Stakes ran over 1m4f,lookssettobearealcompetitive renewalandtheweightsareheadedby YorkscorerMarhabaTheChamp.Kevin Ryan’sfour-year-oldhaswontwiceon theKnavesmirethistermandcouldnot have been more impressive in doing so last time at the Ebor Festival. Held upintherear, hehadplentytodo, but poweredthroughhorsesinfinestyleto a one-and-a-half length victory. This requires more up another 6lb, but he stilllooksprogressiveandwilllikelyget hisfavouredquickground.
Marhaba The Champ was successful at the Ebor Festival and could defy his hike in the weights.
The powerful duo of Charlie Appleby and William Buick landed the spoils in this contest in 2022 with Dhahabi and go in search of back-to-back victories intheracewithVictoryDance AListed winner and runner-up in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes as a juvenile last term, the Dubawi colt has perhaps been a shade disappointing this term, without a win in three starts. Although he must bounce back from a belowpar effort at Ascot last time, a close fourth in Listed company at Deauville on his penultimate start does offer encouragement and a return to that form would make him a contender here. True Legend was second in that Ascot contest and was an eyecatcher at Glorious Goodwood when still finishing second despite being repeatedlydeniedaclearrun.Theform
ofthatGoodwoodracehassincebeen well boosted by the winner and the Camelotcoltlooksthetypetocontinue improving.
Only making his debut in May of this year, Frankel colt Spectacular Style caughttheeyewithatrioofrunner-up finishes in his first three starts. Roger Varian’s three-year-old got off the mark in spectacular style last time out though, cantering to comfortable 20 length success at Haydock. He has since been purchased by Middleham ParkRacing, andlooksahorsetrending in the right direction as he makes his handicap debut here from a mark of just 84. Fellow three-year-old, Tenerife Sunshine, is similarly lightly raced with just the four career starts. A maiden winner at this track last term, Charlie Johnston’s son of Lope De Vega won on handicap debut at Kempton on his only start of this year and leaves the impression that he is a real strong stayer who will appreciate the extra furlong.
PaulandOliverCole’sSplendentwasa winner at Budapest’s historic Kincsem Park when last seen, comfortably landing a Local Group 1 under Frankie Dettori. He is twice a winner in the UK thistermtoo, andisanotherwholooks a real strong stayer at the trip. Divina Grace found Group 2 company a little too much in the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood, but was a determined winner at Bath last time out. This is much tougher than that assignment though, up 2lb, but she is another who willappreciatethequickconditions.

RESTRICT resumed progress and was unfortunate not to win at Newbury a month ago, so he's a confident choice for all that this is quite a competitive event for the grade. The hat-trick seeking Victoria Falls is a threat along with Ranger Thunderbolt.

THE NEWMARKET CHALLANGE WHIP
The Challenge Whip is a unique event in the British racing calendar. Such is the heritage of the race, it has a direct link to the origins of Flat racing in Newmarket
Originally, the winner of the Challenge Whip was awarded an actual whip as a trophy, which now hangs above the fireplace in the Coffee Rooms in the Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street
The whip dates back to the reign of King Charles II (1660-1685) who is understood to have carried it in races himself There is also evidence that the whip’s present wristband and lash consist of hair taken from the great horse Eclipse
In recent years, winners of the Challenge Whip have been:
2022 Super Chief (Mr A E Oppenheimer)
2021 Rhebus Road (Mr T Syder & Mr D Burke)
2020 Zoran (Lord Derby)
2019 Felix (Fittocks Stud)
2018 Maori Bob (P Philipps, C Philipps, T Redman)
2017 Brief Visit (Cliveden Stud)
2016 Nigel (Normandie Stud Ltd)
2015 Golden Jubilee (Mrs J K Powell)
2014 Inspector Norse (Mr J C Smith)
2013 Gone Dutch (Mr J Richmond-Watson)
2012 Odin (Mr J C Smith)
2011 Vita Lika (The Hon P and Mrs F Stanley)
2010 Scottish Boogie (Mr J C Smith)
Today, the winning owner will be presented with a magnificent bronze sculpture to keep.
Three centuries of heritage, one 2023 victor.

PLAY SMARTER
It may payto narrowthis year’s Challenge Whip down to the pair of 3-y-os. PJANOO’s last 2 efforts in Racing League handicaps look very solid form in the context of this race and he’s preferred to Promoter who has been a little disappointing so far this year but is one who could react well to blinkers.
