WELCOME TO

Welcome to the July Course for the last of our Summer Saturday series which has run throughout June, July and August.

IwouldliketotakethisopportunitytothankJenningsbet,TattersallsandGoldings & Powters for their generous support of this afternoon’s card We have a bumper day of eight races on the card including the Listed Jenningsbet Hopeful Stakes, the Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes and our feature race the Newmarket Town Plate.
Dating back to 1666, the Newmarket Town Plate is a historic race on the original Round Course. Initiated by King Charles II, it remains a challenging three-andthree-quarter-mile race for amateurs and pros alike, concluding the summer season at Newmarket’s July Course. This year’s renewal is being run in honour of the late Con Rutledge, who sadly passed away two days before he was due to ride in the race in 2021
Away from the racing, we encourage racegoers to enjoy the expanse of food and drink opportunities available across the course. Turn to the map page in this racecard for more information
Looking ahead to September, we move back to the Rowley Mile for our Autumn Season of racing. There are always key pointers in the juvenile races, whilst top class handicaps and Group 1 races take centre stage. For the first time, our Cambridgeshire Meeting, taking place 28th to 30th September, will feature an Oktoberfest extravaganza, with something for everyone to enjoy. Tickets start from just £10, so head to our website for more information and to purchase your tickets in advance
The highlight of the Autumn season, the Dubai Future Champions Festival takes place 13th and 14th October The highly anticipated Darley Dewhurst Stakes takes place on the Saturday, a race which gives key clues to the QIPCO 2000 Guineas the following year Tickets start from just £10.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck
Warm wishes,
Sophie Able Newmarket Racecourses and International Director

OTHER USEFUL DETAILS
BETTING EXPLAINED
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.
Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

Over this weekend over 500 of our customers are making the journey to the July Course on coach trips organised by our wonderful managers & I hope every one of them has a great day & backs a few winners!
As well as one of our flagship shops being on Newmarket High Street , we can also be found locally in Halstead, Sudbury, Bishops Stortford & Peterborough.
Horseracing is the lifeblood of our business and that is why I think it is important to support the British Racing Industry and as well as sponsoring this Summers weekend finale we have also collaborated with the National Association of Racing Staff (NARS) to fund educational courses for their members.

PLAY SMARTER
HAKUNA BABE almost certainly has races in her off this sort of mark and is taken to back up that theory by opening her account at the seventh attempt. Next on the list is Blue Universe, who put in a good shift over C&D off this mark last weekend. Expert Witness raised her game when third to Kamanika at Leicester and she also enters calculations, along with Ashmore.

PLAY SMARTER
EMARAATY ANA could be set to peak in the final third of the year once again and has a great chance on these terms if anywhere near his best (placed in Group 1s last 3 starts in 2022) He looks the wayto go although a solid case can be made for 3-y-o Lezoo, who also drops markedly in class after contesting the 1000 Guineas and Commonwealth Cup Sprinting is her game and she could revive. Last year’s winner Sam Maximus and Streets of Gold are also respected.

THE NEWMARKET TOWN PLATE
The Newmarket Town Plate is believed to be the oldest and longest Flat race in the world - instituted in 1665 by King Charles II and first run in 1666 to be run ‘forever’. Horses were to carry twelve stones and run over the Round Course of three and three-quarter miles.
The original race was run after three heats on the (then) new Round Course; “on the outside of the Ditch from Newmarket, shall leave all the posts and flags the first and last heats on the right hand and the second on the left hand by starting and ending at the weighing post, by Cambridge Gap, called Thomond’s Post.” Half an hour was allowed between heats, after which the final itself was run within an hour and a half. Today’s race is therefore easy by yesterday’s standards!
The Plate was the first with a set of Rules, for example: “Every rider that layeth hold on, or striketh any of the riders, shall win no plate or prize”.......“Whosoever winneth the plate or prize shall give to the Clerk of the Course twenty shillings, to be distributed to the poor both sides of Newmarket, and twenty shillings to the Clerk of the Race for which he is to keep the course plain and free from cart roots”.......“No man is admitted to ride for this prize that is either a serving man or groom.”

REMEMBERING CON RUTLEDGE
This afternoon’s Newmarket Town Plate is run in honour of Con Rutledge Tragically, Con died in a road accident just two days before he was scheduled to ride in the contest back in 2021.
Today, trainer Ryan Potter will partner Don Bersy in the race and will be wearing the silks of Con, who was his great friend In addition, he will also carry a small portion of Con’s ashes when he is in the saddle.
Potter explained: “I was meant to do the race in Con’s memory last year but then I got sepsis on my birthday weekend, and I ended up being quite ill.
“It took me until about October until I was right again, but I feel fine now. It would be amazing to carry Con’s ashes around in the race, as I know how much he wanted to do the race, as he had been looking forward to it all summer before the accident.”
Con’s son Stephen added: “I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted that the race is being run in memory of my dad. I thought it was a lovely touch. My father would have been absolutely thrilled about it as well
“He had been at it a couple of years trying to get into the race and he was very persistent about it. He was in his early seventies when he got the all-clear medically to ride and once, he knew he was in, he started training hard for it.”
The thoughts of everyone at Newmarket are with Con’s family and friends, many of whom are here today.
