Our first race today; THE TIBER TIGER BRITISH EBF FILLIES’ ‘NEWCOMERS’ MAIDEN STAKES is run in the memory ofTiberTiger, a beloved racehorse and family pet. Tiger’s story is a good one.
In July 2002 While visiting Nick Littmoden’s yard in Newmarket, Mark Harniman made an on-the-spot decision and bought the two-year-old Tiber Tiger for a modest £8,000. Being first time owners, the Harniman family chose the colours, appropriate orange and black tiger stripes, ready for his entry the following Friday, a music night here on the July course.

“It was fantastic to have a runner”, recalls Mark. “He was an outsider in the betting and Frankie was on the short priced favourite. It was very exciting when Tiger hit the front coming out of the dip under the hands of John Egan and Tiger duly won by six lengths!”
“That hot July night is one we will never forget. Jules Holland was on stage that evening, but we never got out of the owners and trainers bar for celebrating”
Tiger became a solid handicapper, running sixty-one races, scoring 8 times. Newmarket was his favourite track winning three times and placing second twice.
The Harniman’s supported his every race, and it was a sad day when he retired from racing, but his story does not end there.
Tiger was retrained for riding and Sue Harniman learned horse management and to ride so she could keep him. Tiger was retired to a farm next to the Harniman’s home where he became a beloved pet, especially for Sue who looked after him daily
Tiger lived a happy spoilt life after racing, turned out with his friends at the farm until he very sadly passed away last year at a grand age of 22. Today the Harniman family are here to celebrate Marks 60th birthday and to remember their beloved friend Tiber Tiger, and if you see a family watching the first race smiling and crying in equal measure, that will be them!
