Newmarket Racecard - Saturday 22nd July

Page 1

Official Racecard - £3.50
SUMMER SATURDAY SATURDAY 22 JULY 2023

Welcome to the July Course for the next of our Summer Saturdays series, Sports Day, which runs throughout June, July and August.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Juddmonte, Lettergold, The Family of Ric and Mary Hambro and Racing TV for their support of this afternoon’s card

Today’s feature race is the Ric and Mary Hambro Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes, a Listed race open to mares and fillies aged three years or older. Run over 1 mile and 4 furlongs, the race sees a clash between the older fillies and the three year old crop, and has been won by trainer John Gosden a record 5 times.

Away from the action on the turf, you can expect a day full of sports activities giving racegoers an opportunity to test their skills at various sports and challenge themselves at something new. Be ready to be impressed by the roaming free-style footballer and all of his tricks, or maybe a round of mini-golf with friends and family

Last night saw the next in our Newmarket Nights series of music fixtures, with Craig David performing an amazing show live after racing There are further concerts from Hacienda Classical, Olly Murs and McFly later in the summer, with tickets for all these events selling fast, and available through our website, www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket

Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.

I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

SUMMER SATURDAYS

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.

Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

A chance is taken on EQUIANO SPRINGS, who is now 2lb below his last winning mark and a reproduction ofhis Haydock effort atthe end ofMaywould bring him firmlyintothe reckoning. The 9-y-o paid the price for racing up with the pace in a strongly-run contest over 7f at York since and dropping back in trip here looks a good move Just A Spark scored over C&D last time and should be on the premises once again, while Mokaatil is also shortlisted.

PLAY SMARTER

Ground firmer than good would be a minor concern for TIME LOCK but she’s essentially a really solid performer in this grade and still appeals as the type who could do even better when circumstances allow. She’s taken to get the better of Novakai, who needs to shrug off a below-par effort in France last time, with the unbeaten Truthful and Sound Angela others that can make their presence felt.

PLAY SMARTER

CANDLE OF HOPE fared best of those ridden prominently in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot and, up against much more exposed types, she’s worth a chance to get back to winning ways A bold showing is likely from recent C&D winner Final Watch and Star of Orion should be on the premises.
