SUMMER ON THE JULY COURSE: AUTUMN ON THE ROWLEY MILE:The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2023
A warm welcome to the July Course for the second day of the Boodles July Festival, Festival Friday, headlined by a top-level contest in the form of the Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tattersalls, bet365, Boodles, House of Cavani and Weatherbys for their sponsorship of today’s card We are also extremely grateful to Boodles for their generous support across all three days of the Boodles July Festival, along with our betting partner bet365
The Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, run over a mile for fillies and mares, has seen some of the most famed racehorses of recent years grace the track at the July Course. Including Soviet Song, Goldikova and Al Bahathri, most recently the race saw Prosperous Voyage win in 2022, to provide jockey Rob Hornby with his first domestic Group One winner
Head down to the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure for Darts with the Stars, where racegoers can compete with some of the leading darts players, including Bobby George and Kevin Painter. We also encourage racegoers to join us after racing to enjoy a DJ set full of feel-good tunes and dance anthems from Star Radio’s Josh Lovatt Please look at the racecourse map further in this racecard for locations of all activity.
Looking ahead, we have another fantastic day of racing tomorrow, with the conclusion of our Boodles July Festival, July Cup Day. The Pertemps Network July Cup is one of the most valuable and prestigious sprint races in the world and the winner is often acknowledged to be the best sprinter in Europe. Tickets are still available to purchase on the gate.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck
Warm wishes,
Sophie Able

Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day.
OTHER USEFUL DETAILS
6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7.
Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number
Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.
Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

We are delighted to be officially opening our new Rose Terrace and Champagne Bar across the Boodles July Festival, following an exciting redevelopment project that has taken place.
The Rose Terrace features some of the most spectacular views down the July Course and offers an alfresco dining experience for racegoers, whilst celebrating one of Newmarket’s most decorated trainers.
The Champagne Bar now features some of the most iconic moments of July Course history, including the great Frankel’s debut, and Frankie Dettori’s 3000th winner. With a fully updated interior, it’s a great place for racegoers to relax and enjoy a drink whilst learning more about our racecourse’s history.
The updated Weighing Room now contains top-class facilities for some of racing’s most important participants, the jockeys. Having been fully modernised, these upgrades are the product of cross-industry collaboration and bring the weighing room into line with new BHA standards of practice.

PLAY SMARTER
Several to consider in a typically-strong renewal of this handicap TAGABAWA was making his turf debut when sixth in a similarlycompetitive race over1 1/2m at RoyalAscot and, withthis drop back intrip a good move and further improvement likely, he gets the nod. Representatives of the Johnston yard are always to be feared in this and Knockbrex will be a threat if bouncing back from his last-time-out blip Burglar, Seendid and the selection’s stablemate Local Dynasty are others to consider

Ray Dawson let the filly take hold of the race and made all, increasing the tempo with two furlongs to go Dawson asked for more in the closing stages but was forced to drift by Lezoo in the closing stages. The smart juvenile responded well to pressure to eventually win by half a length.
She has followed on from this victory with a win in this year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas, looking a class act.

Upgraded to Group One status in 2004, the Falmouth Stakes is one of the most prestigious races of the season for fillies and mares.
Established in 1911, the mile contest is named in honour of the sixth Viscount Falmouth, one of the leading owner-breeders of the 19th Century who was responsible for 16 English Classic victories between 1857 and 1883
Initially for three year olds only, the Falmouth Stakes was opened up to older fillies and mares in 1973 Appropriately, the inaugural running in 1911 fell to Alice, owned by the seventh Viscount Falmouth, son of the sixth Viscount, although few would have got rich backing the 1-10 favourite
During its early history, the Falmouth Stakes was dominated by trainer Alec Taylor, known as “The Wizard of Manton”, who recorded six successes with First Spear (1914), Tomatina (1919), Lady Ava (1920), Blue Lady (1921), Leighon Tor (1922) and Maid Of Bath (1924)
Happy Laughter in 1953 became the first filly to win both the 1000 Guineas and the Falmouth Stakes in the same season Waterloo, in 1972, is the only other to have taken the two Newmarket contests.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sonic Lady won the first running of the Falmouth Stakes with Group Two status in 1987, having also scored 12 months earlier. The Nureyev filly was a truly outstanding performer, having also won the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix du Moulin - all Group One events.
PROSPEROUS VOYAGE 2022 WINNERBetween 1993 and 1995, the combination of owner Lord Carnarvon and trainer Richard Hannon reigned supreme Niche coasted home by an impressive three and a half lengths in 1993, while Lemon Souffle was not hard pressed to record a length and a quarter success a year later. The duo notched their third successive win in 1995 with Caramba, but this time the winning margin was just a shorthead.
The German raider Proudwings made history when she was victorious in 2001 by two lengths. Trained by Cologne-based Ralf Suerland and ridden by leading Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, Proudwings was the first German-trained winner of a Pattern race in Britain since Star Appeal in the 1975 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park
The 2004 renewal, the first with Group One status, saw the 1000 Guineas heroine Attraction take on the older generation for the first time Mark Johnston’s charge ran well, but went down by two and a half lengths to the other star filly of the season, Soviet Song, losing her unbeaten record in the process.
Soviet Song returned in 2005 to defend her title and did so in style, comfortably defeating Alexander Goldrun by two and a half lengths under regular pilot Johnny Murtagh (who had been on board in 2004), albeit in a slower time than the previous year
Probably the greatest winner ever is Goldikova (2009), a 14-time winner at Group/ Grade One level, who created history by winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile in the USA on three occasions (2008, 2009 & 2010).

Ralph Beckett was given his first win in this Group 1 contest with Prosperous Voyage, as she turned over the red-hot favourite Inspiral.
The classy filly came into this with little hope at 16/1, after falling short to Inspiral on three previous occasions. However, the 1000 Guineas runner-up put her best foot forward on the day to reverse the form to notch up a victory at the highest level.
This victory was only her second career success and has subsequently won again at Epsom in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.

The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it.
New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body:The Jockey Club
Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing. Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century
An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.

Race five on today’s card is the Weatherbys British EBF Maiden Stakes, a two-yearold contest staged over seven furlongs and a race which was won 12 months ago by Epictetus, who went on to chase home dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin in Group 1 company and was himself victorious at Epsom, when taking the Blue Riband Trial on reappearance.
Four of the dozen boast racecourse experience, with both Mnawekh and Warm Spell having finished runner-up on debut. The former couldn’t match the winner at Chester, but finished nicely, whilst similar comments apply to the run of Warm Spell at Goodwood, where he chased home Thunder Blue, who has since finished fifth in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. He is rated 94, whilst the third home is rated 78, so the handicapper suggests that Roger Varian’s Mehmas colt ran to a mark in the low 80s on debut. He cost 260,000gns as a yearling and should appreciate the extra furlong.
Both Dallas Star (8th) and Matnookh (11th) contested the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last time and the former was handy throughout, leading the far side group He also made the running when third at Haydock, so expect him to be ridden positively by Kevin Stott. In contrast, Matnookh was slowly away at Windsor and was again ridden with restraint at Ascot, before making late progress. If the cheek-pieces have an impact and he is a little sharper out of the gate, Richard Fahey’s Sea The Stars colt could well turn the form around.
Given that Charlie Appleby has saddled the winner of this race three times since 2017, Emperor’s Star is an obvious starting point when assessing the chances of the newcomers. Another by Sea The Stars, he is out of a half-sister to Group 1 winner Cloth Of Stars (won the 2017 Prix Ganay) and cost €300,000 as a yearling. With Appleby in such fine form (8 winners from 16 runners between 29th June and 7th July, four of which were juveniles), he is very much one for any shortlist.
Aidan O’Brien is another trainer in fine form at present and he sends across the Justify colt, Capulet, from his Ballydoyle base His sire had a nice two-year-old winner at the start of the month, when City Of Troy won by 2½ lengths at the Curragh and the trip looks right for this debut, with him being out of the Galileo mare, Wedding Vow.
Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, owner of Warm Spell, has a second runner in the race, that being the Andrew Balding-trained Arabic Legend. A Dubawi colt, he is a full-brother to Youngest, who won over this trip on her racecourse debut at Leicester last September
Of the remainder, Swift Victory is a half-brother to a two-year-old debutant winner, in the shape of Yorkshire Gold, whilst the 100,000gns breeze-ups purchase User Amistoso hails from a nice family, being by Wootton Bassett and out of a Nayef mare, who is a half-sister to a couple of winners. Those winners include Showroom, who won his only start at two, for Mark Johnston and Highclere. At the time of writing, however, Michael Bell is 0-16 during July and is 0-28 with his two-year-old runners this season.

As ever an interesting maiden with plenty of well-bred sorts from good stables represented. WARM SPELL produced a promising first effort behind a useful and experienced rival at Goodwood (6f) last month and any sort ofimprovement overthis longertrip ought to see him go close. The market will likely offer valuable clues in regard to the newcomers, but the three that stand out at this stage are Emperor’s Star, Arabic Legend and Capulet.

PLAY SMARTER
A tricky closing contest to solve and while SWAYZE has often struggled with consistency, William Muir & Chris Grassick’s 4-y-o is taken to get back to winning ways with Hollie Doyle taking over in the saddle for the first time. The main danger may emerge from Conquistador, who wasn’t beaten far in a big-field Royal Ascot handicap 3 weeks ago Isle of Lismore and Russet Gold can battle out third spot.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
