MARIE LAVEAU showed plenty to work on when fourth in what is traditionally a strong novice at Newbury last month and the 5lb she receives from penalisedwinner Tiamat may prove decisive. Mexicali Rose and Hopeful are a couple of interesting newcomers.

Last time on track, Chaldean (5-2 Joint-Favourite) made it four wins from five starts with a bold front-running display to win the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, Europe’s premier juvenile contest and the highlight of Dubai Future Champions Day at Newmarket.
A son of Frankel, who won this contest back in 2011, Chaldean was slowly into his stride but recovered to take the lead after two furlongs From that point onwards, he was not for passing and held on to score by a head from the fast-finishing Royal Scotsman with fellow 5-2 JointFavourite Nostrum, like the winner racing in the famous Juddmonte silks, a further two and a quarter lengths back in third.
It was a first Darley Dewhurst Stakes success for trainer Andrew Balding in his first season training for Juddmonte, the racing powerhouse founded by the late Prince Khalid Abdullah. Balding’s father Ian enjoyed Dewhurst Stakes success three times with Silly Season (1964), Mill Reef (1970) and Dashing Blade (1989).
Andrew Balding said: “It is the first season I’ve had runners for Juddmonte and he was the first one in It is a huge privilege to train for them particularly when you get sent horses like him With the stallions they have access to it is a dream really.
“He was very smart. Funnily we thought he was very good early spring and into the summer, but he got beaten first time out. Since then, he has gone on and on. He has actually got less smart at home, he has got smarter on the racecourse and that is how you want it really “He would always keep finding. He is just a dream horse really and an absolute star really “You wouldn’t have been surprised if anyone of four or five of them had won but the only sadness is to beat Jim and Fitri Hay as they are very good supporters of mine and that is the only slight negative on it as I hate denying them a good win, but apart from that I’m thrilled “I was fairly confident a furlong out but less confident with a furlong to go He had been out in front a long time and Frankie felt he kicked a little earlier than ideal, but it was probably a race-winning move “He is versatile, and he didn’t have to make it, but it didn’t look like there was any obvious pace here. What we didn’t want was it to turn into a sprint and for us to be out of our ground. He will be fine (in a Guineas) and the bigger the field the better off he will be.
“He is all speed on his dam side out of a Dutch Art mare and I’d be surprised if he got further than a mile “I don’t know yet (if we run him in a trial first) We will see how he is training in the spring and make a decision there. I would be comfortable going straight there but I can’t be making that decision at the moment.
NEWMARKET NEWS: CHALDEAN HANDS BALDING BIGGEST SUCCESS IN HIS FIRST SEASON TRAINING FOR JUDDMONTE WITH DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES VICTORY
“It was only a three-runner race at Doncaster but we got a bit of boost in the Autumn Stakes but sometimes they can be flattered in threerunner races, so it was good to see him do it again against different horses on a different day on a different track.
“You work hard at the start of your career to get access to train horses like this for operations like Juddmonte and we’ve worked hard to get there. It is a great privilege to have them and get them the result.”
Frankie Dettori, riding his third Dewhurst winner after Too Darn Hot (2018) and St Mark's Basilica (2020) said: “He fluffed the start but luckily, I was able to get him up there. When I shot clear I thought I had it in the bag, but I think he kind of lost concentration a bit as he was all on his own. Jim (Crowley, rider of runner-up Royal Scotsman) came late and fast and that kind of caught him by surprise him, not me! Luckily for me, the line was there.
“I was nothing but impressed when I rode him at Doncaster and the first thing I said to Andrew after was Dewhurst and he obliged. “He’s a proper Guineas horse for next year and we can dream now. The form is rock solid and the horse he beat there has won the Autumn Stakes. It has been an up and down day. When I hit the deck, I was a bit shaken up but I’m still here but luckily, I don’t have to ride with my head as I’ve got a thumping headache. He is a nice horse that is just solid. He is uncomplicated and tough, and you can do anything you want with him. He handled the dip well and he should now be the Guineas favourite. It was definitely another step forward.”
Olly Cole, joint-trainer of runner-up Royal Scotsman alongside his father Paul, said: “He broke the track record when he won at Goodwood people have crabbed the race but you can’t crab the race when you break the track record
“Coming down the hill here he arguably might have been a bit unbalanced as we expected the Godolphin horse to go on but that didn’t, so it took us a bit of time to get going.
“The Guineas over a mile next year where he is just galloping will be right up his street. He is seriously very good. To finish like today in the Dewhurst was good. “I’ve been going around the sales telling everyone he was going to win as I thought he would, and he nearly did. The dream is massively still alive.”

ephen was two in life,
Stephen was passionate about two things in life, music (the radio always had to be on) and the Sport of Kings. He developed his love of horse racing as a teenager He said it was an educational tool: horses’ names taught him history, geography and general knowledge; betting taught him fractions. But his love of the sport went deeper than the races. He loved the history of the sport. His hero was Fred Archer and there wasn’t much Stephen didn’t know about Fred Archer’s life or the sport during those Victorian times and of course he could tell you who won the classics and when, their trainers and jockeys.
We were unable to gather after the funeral due to Covid rules. Two years on, there is no better way to celebrate Stephen’s life than with a race in his name on The Rowley Mile Stephen enjoy the day and send some winners our way

NEWMARKET NEWS: BYRNES’ PLAN COMES TO FRUITION AS RUN FOR OSCAR RECORDS COMFORTABLE SUCCESS IN CLUB GODOLPHIN CESAREWITCH
Having secured his place in the two and a quarter mile test with victory at Haydock Park, the gelded son of Oscar looked ahead of the assessor after proving a cut above his rivals in the heritage handicap, which was worth £103,080 to the winner
Buried amongst his rivals for much of the race it wasn’t until just outside the two-furlong pole that David Egan weaved his mount into contention seemingly still full of running with the majority of his rivals flat to the boards.
After sweeping past long-time leader Not So Sleepy the well backed 4-1 chance quickly put the race to bed in a matter of strides before crossing the line three and a quarter lengths clear of runner up Vino Victrix. Byrnes said: “The plan was to arrive at the two-furlong marker and that is why he took a pull at the three. He had a very good preparation and the race had been laid out for him
“We decided not to go to the Curragh as I thought this race, the distance and the track would suit him much better. It was one of those plans that came off on this occasion, but they don’t always come off.
“The plan during the summer was to go to Galway for the amateurs’ race and he got balloted out then When he didn’t get in there, we needed to win somewhere to get in here so we took him to Haydock Park
“Everything went very smoothly, and he got a smooth run through and got there in plenty of time Once I saw the nose peeping through there, I said it would be hard to see him get beat but you never know “We won the Cesarewitch Trial here last year (with Turnpike Trip) and David’s father John rode him. We were thinking of this race for that fella, but he picked up an injury. So, with this horse it has been on the back of my mind for a long time.”
Not only was Byrnes pleased to see his long-term plan for Run For Oscar come off, but he was delighted it was in the silks of the Top Of The Hill Syndicate, who have enjoyed Grade One victories together with Byrnes over the jumps with Solwhit.
He added: “They have been the most tremendous owners, once in a lifetime and they have always left it to me
“They deserve every bit of success they get. It is so hard for us smaller trainers to get our hands on a good horse for a handicap let alone a graded race
Last time on track, Irish trainer Charles Byrnes saw his long-term plan for Run For Oscar come to fruition in emphatic fashion, taking success in the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap, much to the delight of part owner Mary O’Hanlon who described the victory as “unbelievable.”
“I’ve been very fortunate through the years. He could go back over hurdles well. He is on a nice mark over hurdles and my son could ride him and take off seven.
“There is a race at Haydock Park that jumps into my mind straight away. Whatever he does after today is a bonus.”
Although admitting to being a “bit nervous”, Mary O’Hanlon, who is part of the winning syndicate alongside her husband Pat and three children, hopes there remains plenty more chapters in the story of Run For Oscar.
She said: “It is unbelievable and I’m hoarse now My husband Pat is more into it than me, but he was keeping me calm and giving me a running commentary right the way through.
“I was a bit nervous but we were hopeful We had a few bob on him as well
“It has been a terrific day so far and I know we had big days with Solwhit but this has been really good today especially with this horse. “Hopefully there is more to come but we will leave it to the trainer where we go next. There is nice hat shop over there so I might have a look at some!”
As for winning rider David Egan he believed that everything went to plan from the moment the pair set foot on the track.
Egan said: “That was Plan A. Mr Byrnes filled me with lots of confidence going into the race and told me to just take my time.
“It’s a race where they go a strong gallop early and they get going very early, but he didn’t put any pressure on me he told me to just creep along and sneak into the race
“He would rather I was running on to get a place than be up there to lose a place and he has done even better than that.
“The Cesarewitch is a very specialist race. Not only is there the distance of an extended two miles and two furlongs but you have to canter down the whole way and need a horse with a very good mind
“He hacked to post we went down second and I had no other horses around me. I was a mile and a half in front of the rest of the field and he just lobbed away saving so much energy
“I saw a couple of the other runners getting warm and sweaty and taking a hold going to post It makes a big difference with a horse like him. He dropped out and crept into the race from half a mile out. I took a pull on him three out. He’s a very good horse.”
Run For Oscar becomes the sixth Irish-trained Cesarewitch winner in the post-WW2 era following Vintage Crop (1992), Leg Spinner (2007), Low Sun (2018), Stratum (2019) and Great White Shark (2020).

Emergency Procedures
Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse.
In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.
Health And Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
Newmarket Racecourses Official Photographer
The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com.
Racegoers are reminded that many racedays are given coverage on television, radio and in print, various other forms of media and for Newmarket Racecourses commercial use By entering the Racecourse racegoers are accepting they may appear in such coverage
