19th Century Lord George Bentinck, owner of a large expanse of heathland and a Jockey Club member turned acres of scrubland over to grass, purchased adjacent land and established the gallops which still exist today.
Today Today the heath forms the primary training grounds to the largest cluster of racehorses on the planet between two and three thousand in number at any one time It’s combination of training facilities and their interaction with the town, coupled with its unique heritage, are a vital contributor to Newmarket’s position as the preeminent racing and breeding centre for thoroughbreds and spiritual home of horseracing globally 1886 Map shows Hamilton Road and the area north of the heath including Southfield Farm and Seven Springs are relatively similar today. World War II brought formal airfield facilities which occupied the heath for just under 40 years.
Newmarket and horses have been connected since Queen Boadicea founded a Royal stud at Exning. More than 1,000 years later, Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” in this location.
Newmarket Heath surveyed by I.Champan in 1787 shows the state of the racecourses close to the time of the Jockey Club’s founding.Exning and Newmarket were notably quite established.
NEWMARKET HEATH: A HISTORY
1980s The airfield was decommissioned World Wars I and II The Rowley Mile stands and heath were occupied by the military The heath was converted into an airfield for training officers and no flying was permitted on the racedays
17th Century Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I, who moved the Royal court there for a time and raced horses on the Heath. His grandson, Charles II, built the first recorded stand.

The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket in the 1750s had a significant impact on Newmarket heath’s physical environment, increasing racing provisions and changing it from the playground of the nobility it had been up to that point. By 1756 the Round Course built its first stand, simple in nature with stables below and viewing above At The Rowley Mile smaller racing facilities, a weighing house and stables were added and in 1774 the land used for racing was extended and formalised to become the Ancaster Mile
NEWMARKET RACECOURSES:
18th Century
Rowley Mile’s Millennium Grandstand Today. Known for its racing and live music, The July Course remains one of Cambridgeshire’s most popular summer venues.
ROWLEY MILE & JULY COURSE
Over the late 18th and 19th Century, races were changing shorter distances and more fixed finishing posts meant the nature of spectating was equally shifting. The 1850s brought significant reorganisation on the heath associated with the growing focus on the Rowley Mile including its first stand. This was replaced by the Astley Stand in 1875 when a stand exclusively for trainers and jockeys was also built, located on the site of the current Head-on Stand.
The most significant early development within racing in Newmarket came in 1665, when King Charles II, added a third “Round Course” to the two already existing courses in Newmarket, the Beacon Course (today the Rowley Mile) and the Cambridgeshire Course All three courses were to be used for a new race which was first run in 1666, the Newmarket Town Plate It was stated that the race should be run “forever”, and it continues to be run today. Due to the nature of racing at the time agile viewing was required, with spectators largely looking on from horseback or carriages.
17th Century
19th Century
20th Century 1911 saw further development with a new weighing room at Rowley Mile (now known as the Hong Kong Suite) designed by Walter Brierley. New and more modest stands for the public and Jockey Club members were also built. As crowds grew at the July Course’s summer meetings, concern over extending facilities and ruining the ‘picnic atmosphere’ were debated. In the 1930s, five main buildings were constructed The Weighing Room, Head-on Stand, and 3 similar structures for Members, Tattersalls, and Silver Ring patrons. These still form the primary trackside viewing facilities today.
A number of courses have been in use in Newmarket over the centuries. The evolution of Rowley Mile and the July Course reflects how the sport has changed to be enjoyed by all, and not just the privileged few.
The Round Course at Rowley Mile (1958-1973) Post-War Decades Immediately following the second world war, the July Course saw crowds grow for its summer Derby Day to levels of attendance not seen today. However it was not to last and in 1954 declining attendance figures brought proposals for a round course in front of the Rowley Mile stands, with the suggestion it would make it easier for spectators to view. In 1958 a round course was laid out and it was used until 1973 1980s to Present The most recent stage in the Rowley Mile’s evolution is the Millennium Stand, which was unveiled by the Queen on 6 May 2000 The Rowley Mile and July Course can welcome up to 20,000 people Head-On Stand (1889-c.1929) right of Astley Stand, photographed 1896 1945 Derby at the July Course drew bigger crowds than we see today.

It is only in relatively recent history that racing has been staged on an organised basis. Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys
OUR ORIGINS T: 0844 579 3010 W: newmarketracecourses.co.uk
The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it. New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body: The Jockey Club Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing. Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath by George Stubbs shows a trainer stable lad and a jockey Gimcrack was one of the most popular and admired of all 18th century racehorses. In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.

Emergency Procedures Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital. Photography Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
