The Darley Dewhurst Stakes
Europe’s juvenile championship race, first sponsored by Darley back in 2000
Saturday, 9th October, 2021 Official racecard £3.50
Too Darn Hot? Too darn good! The spectacular moment when the son of Dubawi zipped clear in the Dewhurst — rated the best win in the race this century. He now stands at Dalham Hall Stud alongside his sire.
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the Rowley Mile. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Rowley Mile for Dubai Future Champions Day, the crescendo to the Gold Season here at Newmarket. The racing today is nothing short of magnificent, with four Group races, a Listed contest and one of the most important Heritage Handicaps of the year, the Together For Racing International Cesarewitch. The Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes is widely regarded as one of the most important juvenile races to be run anywhere in the world, with the very best two year olds in Europe going head to head. The winners of this race invariably feature in the biggest mile and middle-distance races the following season, such as The 2000 Guineas and The Eclipse. Further opportunities for the juveniles to display their talent come in the Group Three Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes and the Group Three Emirates Autumn Stakes. Not to be upstaged by their speedier counterparts, the stayers have their chance to shine in the Together For racing International Cesarewitch Handicap, which is run over two miles and two furlongs and has a history dating back to 1839. Our thanks go to Godolphin, Darley and Emirates for their continued support and generous sponsorship of this fixture. Please do head down to the parade ring at 12.15, where our friends at Retraining of Racehorses will be hosting a parade of ex-racehorses who have embarked on second careers, including the recently-retired globetrotter Prince Of Arran. If you are looking for some advice to help you find the winners this afternoon, our raceday announcer Steven Powell will be hosting a 'Punter's Panel' with Pat Cooney of bet365 and 'The Wine Tipster' Neil Phillips in the winner's enclosure at 12.30pm. We ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard which explains what we can all do to keep each other safe whilst on course. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Newmarket.
Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - WEDNESDAY 20 OCTOBER TWO-YEAR-OLD DAY This raceday is traditionally known as Two-Year-Old Day, as some of the younger horses take centre stage once more following the excitement of our Dubai Future Champions Festival. Tickets available now.

First Aid Point
Just as we begin every year on the Rowley Mile full of anticipation, the end of the 2021 Newmarket Gold Season gives us a chance to reflect on some fantastic performances and look for superstars of the future. Day Two of the Dubai Future Champions Festival is one of the most exciting fixtures on the calendar, with no fewer than four Group contests across the seven race card this afternoon, including the second leg of the traditional ‘Autumn Double’ the Together For Racing International Cesarewitch. The main focus of this meeting is on the juveniles and our feature race is the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes over seven furlongs, regarded as one of the most prestigious races for two year olds anywhere in the world. It takes a top-class horse to win it and whoever triumphs almost always proves to be a top level performer as a three year old, with the recent roll of honour including the likes of St Mark’s Basilica (2020), Churchill (2016), Dawn Approach (2012) and the legendary Frankel (2010). The Darley Dewhurst is also one of the most reliable yardsticks for the following year’s QIPCO 2000 Guineas. Four winners of this race since the turn of the century have gone on to follow up in the first Classic of the year, while two more have won the Derby at Epsom Downs. Two other top juvenile races on the card are the Group Three Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes and the Group Three Emirates Autumn Stakes, while the Together For Racing International Cesarewitch is one of the most popular races in the autumnal racing programme. Run over a distance of 2m 2f, the Heritage Handicap offers the unique sight of 30-plus runners charging up the Rowley Mile. History tells us it pays to consider runners from Jump racing yards, with five of the last seven renewals going to trainers who specialise in racing over obstacles rather than on the level. We have enjoyed another thrilling Gold Season and it is just possible that the best has been saved until this afternoon.

12.15-12.25pm Parade Ring
Natasha Eaton with Prince of Arran
RETRAINING OF RACEHORSES PARADE A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.15 – 12.25pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). This year’s parade features two much loved horses who were both placed in the Melbourne Cup, the recently retired globetrotter Prince Of Arran and now 18-year-old Purple Moon. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR: • Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities • Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses • Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing • Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care. 1. African Jazz (Showjumping /Eventing) - ridden by Tara Murphy Six-year-old gelding by Cape Cross, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby African Jazz ran eight times on the flat, winning twice, before he was retired from racing in 2019. Tara Murphy acquired African Jazz from Godolphin Rehoming in February of this year and the pair are currently competing in British Eventing classes up to 90cm and looking forward to progressing through the ranks. Tara says: “What I find so special about African Jazz is his amazingly forward attitude to work - he tackles everything with a happy expression and he is a pleasure to ride”. 2. Ahzeemah (Showing) – ridden by Annette Austin 12-year-old gelding by Dubawi, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor The winner of five of his 25 starts, including the Gr.2 Lonsdale Stakes at York, Ahzeemah won £618,655 in prize money. Working in trainer Saeed Bin Suroor’s office, Annette Austin had had her eye on Ahzeemah for some time and when he was retired she asked if she could rehome him. After a spell at Godolphin Rehoming, Annette took on Ahzeemah in 2016, initially taking it slowly and then gradually retraining him as a riding horse. Annette says: “We’ve done a little bit of everything, but we are now focusing on showing and dressage. He’s qualified for the Tattersalls RoR Amateur Series final in 2022 and we cannot wait to go to Hickstead.” 3. Burniston Rocks (Showing) – ridden by Samantha Baker Four-year-old gelding by Monsieur Bond, formerly trained by Ed Vaughan Burniston Rocks had an undistinguished career on the racecourse, running nine times on the flat and being placed once. However, together with Samantha Baker, he is now carving out a more successful second career. The pair have only been a partnership since March but after being placed second in a large hack class on their debut in the show ring they have concentrated on RoR showing classes and qualified for this year’s Tattersalls RoR Amateur Series final at Hickstead in June where they got to compete in the International Arena. Samantha says of Burniston Rocks: “He is an amazing little horse who always tries his hardest”.
4. Key Victory - ridden by Sophie Stanfield Six-year-old gelding by Teofilo, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby Key Victory won three of his 16 starts before concluding his racing career earlier this year in Dubai. He then had a three-month spell at Godolphin Rehoming before embarking on the next phase of his life. Sophie says “He is a really kind and genuine horse; he has a superb attitude and has tackled every new task brilliantly. He is a lovely mover and he has just started jumping - something that he seems to very much enjoy. We think he will make a nice eventer eventually - he could be an exciting horse for the future”. 5. Prince Of Arran - ridden by Natasha Eaton Eight-year-old gelding by Shirocco, formerly trained by Charlie Fellowes In a globetrotting career spanning seven years Prince of Arran ran 49 times and earned over £2m in prize money. The winner of six races, he was also three times placed in the Melbourne Cup, as well as running in America, Dubai, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. He is ridden today by Natasha Eaton who was his travelling companion for many of his international adventures. Natasha says: “Following his retirement from racing, he will be taking up residence at Charlie’s parents’ farm in Abbots Ripton (Cambridgeshire) where we will begin his retraining. Who knows where we will see him or what he’ll be doing next?” 6. Purple Moon - ridden by Francesca Cumani 18-year-old gelding by Galileo, formerly trained by Luca Cumani A regular international traveller, Purple Moon enjoyed his greatest successes winning the Ebor handicap at York, before finishing second in the 2007 Melbourne Cup. Following his retirement, Purple Moon flourished in the show ring, winning at Hickstead and twice qualifying for the Horse of the Year Show. Nowadays, ‘George’, as he known, enjoys an idyllic life in the care of Francesca Cumani. Francesca says: “It would be hard to find a horse who over the course of his life has meant so much to so many people. After a remarkably varied career, he now finds himself a resident in my garden, although if he could come in the house and sit on the sofa with a cuppa and a chocolate biscuit he would be really at home.” 7. Sovereign Debt (Showing) – ridden by Jill Wormall 12-year-old gelding by Dark Angel, formerly trained by Ruth Carr After a long and successful career, Sovereign Debt retired from racing in August 2018. In all he ran 63 times winning 15 races, including eight Group or Listed races. He has taken very well to his new role in the show ring, winning several classes and qualifying for the Horse Of The Year Show. The pinnacle of his showing career so far was winning a 20 strong former racehorse class at the Great Yorkshire Show in July. Jill Wormall says: “Words cannot describe what this horse means to us, he really is a horse of a lifetime who is getting better and better all the time.” 8. Skysurfers (Dressage) - ridden by Rachel Ovens 15-year-old gelding by E Dubai, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor Skysurfers ran ten times, in the UK and Dubai, winning four races before being retired in 2011. His owner Claire Anderson acquired Skysurfers in 2013 through the Godolphin Rehoming programme. After retraining he initially turned his hoof to some low-level eventing but in recent years he has concentrated on dressage with rider/trainer Rachel Ovens. Since 2020 the pair have gone from strength to strength and they recently finished third at the RoR Southern Dressage Championships at Blenheim. His owner Claire says “At home he is a real character, very clever and quick to learn but he is also very opinionated and loves being a prankster." 9. Vancouverite (Dressage) – ridden by Emily Crabb 11-year-old gelding by Dansili, formerly trained by John Ferguson Vancouverite ran 15 times, winning six races, two over hurdles and four on the flat. He retired from racing in 2015 and came to Emily Crabb through the Godolphin Rehoming scheme a year later. He has proved extremely versatile, doing dressage, showjumping, cross-country, pleasure and endurance rides. This year he started competing in British Eventing classes, making the top ten in one and he has also been successful in the show ring with wins including the RoR Challenge class at the Suffolk Show. Emily says: “Vancouverite has been successful with everything I have tried with him. He is a very special boy who is very loved by us all. We couldn’t imagine life without him.” For more information visit ror.org.uk

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. COROEBUS arguably kicked for home too soon when worn down close home in the Royal Lodge over C&D 2 weeks ago and can make amends dropped to a Group 3. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the son of Siyouni turned the tables on both Wembley and Thunder Moon from their run at the Curragh and handled the dip best of all to win by three quarters of a length. St Mark’s Basilica has proved himself to be a superstar. His recent retirement means he ended his racing career with five subsequent Group 1 victories; the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, the French Guineas and French Derby, the CoralEclipse at Sandown Park and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. 10th placed Poetic Flare won the 2020 QIPCO 2000 Guineas on his second start as a three-year-old.
Charlie Appleby won this contest in 2019 with superstar Pinatubo and he runs the unbeaten Native Trail today.

The breed is changing. Dubawi, conceived 20 years ago. And now see his
trademark muscularity and head-down determination across the world’s racecourses. This year, he’s sired more Group winners and Stakes winners than any other European stallion. Way more. And his outstanding sire son, Night Of Thunder, might one day be even better. Dubawi sired 15% Stakes winners to first-crop runners; Night Of Thunder is on 18%. The Dubawi look – it’s here to stay.

TOGETHER FOR RACING INTERNATIONAL – CONNECTING THE WORLD TO THE RACEHORSE Together for Racing International (TFRI) is an organisation to promote education, community engagement and career opportunities that connect people with the thoroughbred industry worldwide. TFRI resulted from a 2019 education forum held in Newmarket that gathered breeding, racing, and education professionals from the UK, Ireland, France, Japan, Australia and the US. At the forum, attendees collaborated to assess existing and emerging initiatives, strategise programme development and generate ideas to lower barriers to entry. The momentum created by this unifying event, along with a shared mission to promote educational opportunities, has grown into a global initiative that provides a platform and network for continuing the work. The thoroughbred is the common denominator among all racing countries, uniting us across geographic regions, cultural differences, and bridging language barriers. Together, we can propel the industry toward a healthy and sustainable future by connecting others to our most precious resource – the horse.

Willie Mullins comes here with a typically strong hand and his M C MULDOON is fancied to gain compensation for a luckless Ascot Stakes second and give him a record fourth consecutive win in this event. Lightly-weighted Foveros is another who makes plenty of appeal and he can make it a famous 1-2 for Mullins. Live Your Dream rates the pick of the home contingent with Goobinator a lively outsider.

Though his well-being has to be taken on trust following over a year off, BARNEY ROY’s record when fresh augurs well and he will prove a very tough nut to crack if, at the age of seven, all his ability remains intact. Emergency Procedures
Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.
Health And Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
Newmarket Racecourses Official Photographer
The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com. Racegoers are reminded that many racedays are given coverage on television, radio and in print, various other forms of media and for Newmarket Racecourses commercial use. The British Horseracing Authority will amend paragraphs 28 to 32 of the Weights and Handicapping Code and the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entries Code in the event that raising of the weights at the 24-hour stage proves necessary. This race will be restricted to 34 runners plus two reserves. The two reserves will be nominated as R35 and R36. The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed ‘Reserves’ which has been published in The Racing Calendar and which also appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Internet site www.racingadmin.co.uk. Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The Racecourse Executive will pay a travel allowance of £400 to any reserve that travels to the course on the day prior to this race, but which subsequently fails to take the place of a declared runner. For the avoidance of doubt, such payments will only be made to any such reserve which would reasonably be expected to travel on the day prior to the race and, thus, for which it would be necessary to begin the journey to the course before the deadline for a reserve to replace a non-runner has passed, i.e., 1.00 p.m. on Friday, October 8th. Trainers seeking to claim this allowance must seek prior confirmation from the Racecourse Executive before commencing the journey. The British Horseracing Authority has modified the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entry Code and the Division of Races section of the Race Administration Code for the purposes of this race.
