CAMBRIDGESHIRE THURSDAY

THURSDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2021 Official Racecard £3.50

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the Rowley Mile. A very warm welcome to the Rowley Mile for the start of the Cambridgeshire Meeting. We have no fewer than eight races to savour this afternoon and the action is as high in quality as it is plentiful. The highlight of the afternoon is The Tattersalls Stakes, a Group Three race for two year old colts and geldings of seven furlongs in distance. A recurring theme throughout the Gold Season at Newmarket is the opportunity for the current crop of juveniles to show their ability and this race is no exception. Indeed, it is not uncommon for those who run well today to contest the Group One Dewhurst Stakes next month. We can also look forward to Listed action in The Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes, which is much more of a stamina test, being run over two miles. And with a six furlong sprint and races over middle distances, there is variety and intrigue throughout the afternoon. We would like to thank Tattersalls, the European Breeders Fund and the Federation of Bloodstock Agents for sponsoring this afternoon's races. We are very grateful for their support. We ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard which explains what we can all do to keep each other safe whilst on course. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Newmarket. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - FRIDAY 24 - SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING Our Cambridgeshire Meeting returns to the Rowley Mile, you can expect world-class racing action, including seven Group races across the three days. Tickets available now.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING 23-25.09 SUN CHARIOT DAY 2.10 DUBAI FUTURE CHAMPIONS FESTIVAL 8-9.10

O N SA LE NOW

Today is the beginning of the prestigious Cambridgeshire Meeting, which will see three days of world class horseracing unfold on the iconic Rowley Mile. Battles will be won and memories will be made in that time, with the action culminating in two helpings of Group One action on Juddmonte Day on Saturday 25th September. There is plenty to savour before then though, with a highly competitive eight race card on offer this afternoon that includes both Group and Listed action. The feature contest is the fourth race, the Group Three Tattersalls Stakes for two year old colts and geldings over seven furlongs, which has developed a reputation for producing smart winners over the years. Indeed, the winner of the Tattersalls Stakes often returns here at the end of The Newmarket Gold Season for the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes on Dubai Future Champions Day (Saturday 9th October in 2021). The last horse to complete that particular double was the Jamie Osborne-trained Milk It Mick in 2003, while the Aidan O’Brien-trained Wichita went on to finish third in the Dewhurst after winning this in 2019. Following that contest is the Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes for stayers over two miles. First run at Ascot in 2003, the race has gone from strength to strength since switching to the Rowley Mile in 2011 and those lining up often include horses harbouring ambitions of becoming ‘Cup’ contenders the following season. Closing the card is The Newmarket Challenge Whip Handicap over a mile and a quarter, the roots of which stretch back to the 18th Century. The winner of this contest would traditionally receive a whip that was given to The Jockey Club by King Charles II and contains pieces of the legendary racehorse Eclipse’s tail. Nowadays the race is a traditional handicap, though it has certainly thrown up its fair share of exciting finishes and serves as a fitting finale to a top drawer opening day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. Tracey Harding joined Discover Newmarket, the town’s official tourism service, just a few months before the pandemic hit. We caught up with her, two years on to find out what life has been like. Well, it has certainly been a tough 18 months here in Newmarket. With a town so dependent on its racing visitors, including those from overseas, we’ve all felt the impact. However, we have been overwhelmed with the support of our loyal visitors as well as residents who came out and supported us just as soon as it was safe to do so. Thankfully, we are now seeing business return to near normal levels, which includes our own guided tours, and it is certainly good to be welcoming visitors back again. In addition to our regular tours of the Gallops, Trainer’s Yards, National Stud and the National Horseracing Museum, we have also been grateful to be able to run our feature tours. Visits to Dalham Hall, Godolphin’s UK headquarters, Juddmonte, home to the mighty Frankel and Clarehaven Stables to meet trainers John and Thady Gosden have certainly been highlights for me. It has been great working with the team to adapt and innovate our behind the scenes, guided tours during these challenging times. As a result, we introduced private experiences for up to six people so that family and friends could feel safe whilst still being able to enjoy our tours. These have proved so popular they now form part of our tours programme and are a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion as they can be booked on a day of your choice. We have also developed some new, themed walking tours aimed at different audiences so that even those that are not avid racing fans can still enjoy a visit to our historic town. So, do look out for our Food and Drink Taster Tour, Newmarket’s Racing Royalty Tour and our literary tour, On the Trail of Dick Francis. As I’ve discovered for myself, we have such a special offer here at the home of horseracing, with fabulous accommodation, eateries, attractions and activities, So, do please check out our website for ideas and inspiration and contact the Discover Newmarket team who can help make the most of your time with us.

PLAY SMARTER

MAX VEGA generally keeps better company than this and was unlucky not to make a bigger impression when fifth off a mark of 106 in the Ebor last month, so he’s a confident selection to gain his second course win provided the return to this trip doesn’t pose a problem. Roberto Escobarr was just a place behind the selection last time, so he’s regarded as a threat, with the class-dropping Nayef Road.

PLAY SMARTER

A 2lb rise for TADREEB’s recent Haydock success looks very fair indeed given that the runner-up has won since and the third went close at Kempton next time. THE NEWMARKET CHALLENGE WHIP

The Challenge Whip is a unique event in the British racing calendar. Such is the heritage of the race, it has a direct link to the origins of Flat racing in Newmarket. Originally, the winner of the Challenge Whip was awarded an actual whip as a trophy, which now hangs above the fireplace in the Coffee Rooms in the Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street. The whip dates back to the reign of King Charles II (1660-1685) who is understood to have carried it in races himself. There is also evidence that the whip’s present wristband and lash consist of hair taken from the great horse Eclipse. In recent years, winners of the Challenge Whip have been: 2020

Zoran (Lord Derby)

2019

Felix (Fittocks Stud)

2018

Maori Bob (P Philipps, C Philipps, T Redman)

2017

Brief Visit (Cliveden Stud)

2016

COVID-19 has put a greater emphasis on community more than ever, and over the past year we have witnessed many amazing and selfless deeds, each according to their ability and talent. In collaboration with The Jockey Club. Newmarket Town Council, and Newmarket Journal, The Rotary Club of Newmarket launched a search to recognise those citizens in the CB8 area to find those who deserved recognition most for having gone ‘above and beyond’ in this past year. A special evening of celebration was held on Saturday 31st July at the prestigious venue of the Jockey Club, who hosted the event and provided canapés and drinks on the terrace overlooking the spectacular gardens. Clare, Countess of Euston, Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, circulated among the guests chatting to the nominees, their sponsors, families, and friends, thanking them for their selfless efforts over that past year. Following the reception on the terrace the guests with representatives of local organisations moved indoors for the award presentations. Rotarian Christine Shand compered the presentations, where she said that our Rotary strap line, ‘Service above Self’, was truly celebrated. Rotarians Alan and Christine Shand were the driving force that brought all the supporting organisations together to deliver an evening to remember. Awards were presented to: Carers Joshua McAllister (U21), who has supported his family, including two younger brothers, for several years. He has been a fantastic ambassador for other young carers in Newmarket Academy and a true credit to his family. Pam Morter (Adult), has a full life helping others. She is a stalwart of the local church, visits elderly neighbours, shops for others, and phones around regularly asking up to 50 people what they need. As a support to Gillian Clarkson, who is herself a carer, who nominated Pam, she is invaluable. Fundraisers Leia Schultz (U13 1st place), decided to walk 100 miles in 30 days to raise money for Newmarket Kings Theatre. By April 11th she had raised over £3000 for the theatre. Ben Blowes (Adult, 1st place), astounded everybody by running 31 marathons in 31 days! Through his Ben efforts Ben raised over £225,000 for Tom’s Trust. Being such a high-profile figure he managed to bring the community together during this difficult time when people cycled and ran alongside him cheering him on along the route, taking up their own challenges to help him reach his goal. Volunteers Cameron and Ella Fisher (U13), wanted to thank NHS staff who worked around the clock treating those badly affected by Coronavirus. The brother and sister decided to fill 100 goodie bags with luxury items with gifts donated by companies and money from local people. In the end they gave out 350 bags through My WiSH and at Addenbrookes Cambridge and Newmarket with items such as soaps, snacks, water bottles, tea bags, notebooks, pens, chocolate treats, candles, cream tea vouchers, shower gel and hand cream. Cole Sebastian, Oscar Brown, Edward Carter, Leon Treharne, Ethan Eagling, Megan Conti Lamont, and Daniel Beynon; The Newmarket Academy Skate Park Team (U21) 1st place, who with 3 years of hard work brought this project together. With no funds available this group researched the need, presented the findings, gathered funds, created the design, and created a wonderful asset for the community. They saw the need and just got on with it. The award was received on behalf of the whole team by Leon, Ethan and Daniel. Georgina Sampson (Adult, 1st place), has worked tirelessly to help neighbours and the community at large. From organising daily dancing in the street during the first lockdown, to helping out daily with assigning tasks coming into the coronavirus helpline, to walking dogs and running errands for those in isolation. Her selfless and can-do attitude has been invaluable to the helpline response, and she has helped countless people during the last year. Nominated by Douglas Hall and also by 88-year-old disabled Anne Vowden for whom Georgina delivered food and plants for the front garden. For Outstanding Service to our Community 2020/21 Georgina Sampson was also presented with the Overall Award as judged by the 3 panels and overseen by the current and former Presidents of Newmarket Rotary. In addition to a trophy and certificate Georgina was presented with a further gift by David Harper form Golding Newmarket. After the presentations, President Tony Savill thanked Newmarket Town Council, The Jockey Club and Newmarket Journal for supporting the awards so genorously and Tesco and Goldings of Newmarket for additional prizes. In closing the evening with a prayer for all who selflessly serve in the community, Rev Cheryl Belding thanked Rotarians Christine and Alan Shand for organising the Newmarket Rotary Local Community Awards. Congratulations to all.

Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
