Newbury Racecard - Thursday 3rd July

Page 1

In loving memory of Barry Hills Barry Hills, one of Britain’s most respected trainers sadly passed away last week at the age of 88. The legendary Lambourn based trainer saddled more than 3,000 winners in a career spanning over 40 years. One of the outstanding trainers of his generation, Barry Hills leaves behind a legacy, not only through his own achievements but through that of his sons, Classic winning jockeys Michael and Richard and Group 1 winning trainer, Charles. As his local track, Barry Hills enjoyed a long and successful association with Newbury Racecourse, training the winner of the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes twice. Motavato provided Hills with his first top level success at Newbury in 1982, the second victory came with the outstanding filly, Cormorant Wood in 1984, both ridden by Steve Cauthen. The latter shared the honours in a famous dead heat with John Dunlop’s Wassl and was considered one of the best fillies Hills ever trained. Hills enjoyed three wins in the Hungerford Stakes: Prego (1984), Distant Relative (1989), and Norwich (1990), with the latter two ridden by his son Michael. He recorded multiple successes in the Greenham Stakes, with victories from Munir (2001) ridden by son Richard, and Red Clubs in 2006 when partnered by Michael. In 2007, Barry and Michael combined to win the Mill Reef Stakes with Dark Angel, now a leading sire. One of Hills’ most notable stars, Haafhd, announced himself at Newbury in the Listed Washington Singer Stakes before going on to land the 2,000 Guineas and Champion Stakes. Newbury Racecourse send their deepest condolences to the Hills family and Barry’s many friends. There will be a minute’s silence before the first race on today’s card to pay tribute and remember Barry Hills.

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to our Summer Evening Series Raceday featuring The 70s Disco – the first of three exciting evening meetings in partnership with Hits Radio. We have a fantastic evening lined up, and I’d like to extend our sincere thanks to today’s partners: Legal Protection Group, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, the European Breeders Fund, Fidelity Energy, Sequoia Hair and Beauty, Grosvenor Sport, and our Summer Evening Series title partner, Hits Radio. It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of legendary racehorse trainer Barry Hills. Based in Lambourn, Barry enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over 40 years, enjoying more than 3,200 wins, including notable victories here at Newbury in the Lockinge, Hungerford, and Greenham Stakes. A one-minute silence will be held before the first race at approximately 5:50pm. We invite you to join us around the Parade Ring to pay your respects. The first of our six races this evening is an apprentice handicap over five furlongs. At the top of the racecard is Lequinto, who will be looking to secure a fourth consecutive victory for jockey Matthew Lloyd Slater and trainer Tony Carroll. The third race (7:15 pm) is for two-year-old colts and geldings over six furlongs. Locally trained Goldwork, a son of former Mill Reef Stakes winner Dark Angel, claimed a nice novice win at Goodwood at the end of May. Finally, it’s great to welcome back six-time Irish champion jockey Colin Keane, who returns for the Juddmonte operation after tasting success here last month. Following its debut in 2023, the Summer Evening Series returns bigger and better in 2025, thanks to our renewed partnership with Hits Radio. Known for playing the biggest hits and throwbacks, Hits Radio will bring the party atmosphere to all three of our evening events this month, with music throughout the racing and an afterparty following the final race. Tonight, we kick off with a brand-new theme: The 70s Disco. Expect iconic 70s anthems, roaming disco dancers, spot prizes for the best-dressed guests, and an afterparty you won’t want to miss. The Hits Party Tent will be buzzing all evening, so be sure to stop by and soak up the retro vibes. The series continues next week with the return of The Wild Wild West on Thursday 10th July, featuring line dancing classes and a rodeo bull. Then, on Thursday 24th July, we wrap up the series with The Ibiza Beach Club – the ultimate summer closing party. 2025 also marks our biggest year of music yet, with four spectacular music racedays in the calendar. We’re thrilled to welcome Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Ella Henderson for Weatherbys Super Sprint Day on Saturday 19th July, Bjorn Again on Friday 15th August, Clean Bandit for Visit Malta Hungerford Day on Saturday 16th August, and James Bay as part of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend on Saturday 20th September. Savings are available for a limited time with the Early Bird discount deadline for Bjorn Again and Clean Bandit arriving at 11:59pm tomorrow, Friday 4th July. Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable evening and look forward to welcoming you back on Thursday 10th July for the next instalment of the Summer Evening Series: The Wild Wild West.

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do: 1.

Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: •

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

•

‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

•

What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

•

The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.
