Sponsor of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend

Founded on 20th December 1983, Dubai Duty Free is now in its 42nd year of operation and has grown into one of the world’s largest single travel retail operators.

Now employing over 5,800 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing, and it continues to grow.

Currently operating around 40,000 sqm of retail space across Dubai International and Al Maktoum International airports, Dubai Duty Free has continued its investment in the development and expansion of its retail offering. This includes the multi-million renovation of its three Arrivals shops across Terminals 1, 2, and 3 at Dubai International Airport.

Recently, the retailer opened a second Louis Vuitton boutique in Terminal 3, Concourse A on 4th September, while a new Cartier boutique is also set to open in Concourse A by the end of the month.

In addition to the retail division Dubai Duty Free operates a Leisure Division which includes The Irish Village both in Garhoud and Studio One Hotel, the Century Village, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, home to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and The Jumeirah Creekside Hotel

To date, Dubai Duty Free has received over 780 awards including its record tenth Frontier ‘Airport Retailer of the Year’ Award in 2021. In 2025, Dubai Duty Free won several awards including its 24th consecutive Business Traveller Middle East Award for "Best "Airport for Duty Free Shopping in the Middle East". It also received the "International Safety Awards for Distinction" and "Best in Sector Award - Retail" at the British Safety Council. Additionally, Dubai Duty Free was recognised as one of the Best Places to Work in the UAE for 2024 within the 'Very Big Organisation' category.

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, featuring the prestigious Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (In honour of Geoff Lewis).

To begin, we’d like to extend our sincere thanks to our valued sponsors: Pump Technology, the European Breeders Fund, our HR partner Conundrum Consulting, and of course, our title partner for the weekend, Dubai Duty Free.

2025 marks the 30th year of Newbury’s partnership with Dubai Duty Free. Over the decades, Dubai Duty Free has grown into a global success story, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support. We’re delighted to welcome members of the Dubai Duty Free team back for what promises to be another fantastic weekend.

We’re in the midst of our biggest year of music yet, and we’re thrilled to welcome James Bay today. Head to the main stage in the Grandstand Enclosure at approximately 5:45pm to catch the start of James Bay’s headline set

This month marks the 120th anniversary of the very first meeting at Newbury Racecourse, held on September 26th and 27th, 1905. The Racecourse’s inaugural race, the Whatcombe Handicap, was won by Copper King. We’re also proud to launch a new initiative in partnership with Deaf Unity, making today’s fixture more inclusive and accessible for deaf communities. For the first time at a UK music race event, British Sign Language interpreters will be on site, enabling deaf racegoers to enjoy both the live racing commentary and James Bay’s performance. This milestone is kindly supported by OLBG, whose generous contribution has helped provide interpreters and support a range of inclusive activities across the Racecourse. We’re delighted to welcome deaf communities to Newbury today and celebrate this important step toward greater accessibility.

The Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (In honour of Geoff Lewis) headlines the day, boasting an enhanced prize fund of £125,000 But the real spotlight falls on Into The Sky, the Jim Boyle-trained colt who stunned racegoers last month with an 80-1 debut victory, winning by an impressive seven and a half lengths.

Into The Sky is eligible for the £50,000 Mill Reef Bonus, thanks to his maiden win at Newbury, and connections have also supplemented him for this race

Meanwhile, Rock On Thunder, who was only beaten a length in the Gimcrack at York last time out, looks to bring the strongest form into today’s contest

Be sure to visit the Dubai Duty Free marquee today, where you can enjoy authentic Dubaian hospitality and take part in the ever-popular Wheel of Fortune, with prizes including free entry into the Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise and Millennium Millionaire draws.

Looking ahead, the Flat season continues with the return of Oktoberfest during the BetVictor Flat Season Finale on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October Expect traditional Bavarian food, a wide selection of drinks, and plenty of oompah – it’s set to be our best yet!

We’re also excited to announce the return of our Christmas parties, taking place on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th December Availability is limited, so if you’re looking for a unique, themed venue for your festive celebrations, we’ve got you covered. For more details, please see the advert later in the racecard.

Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and look forward to welcoming you back for the BetVictor Flat Finale with Oktoberfest on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

120TH ANNIVERSARY

From royal winners and racing legends to community milestones and celebrations, the Berkshire course reflects on its 120-year history.

Newbury Racecourse is celebrating 120 years as one of the UK’s most historic and prestigious racing venues. Officially opened in September 1905, the Racecourse held its first meeting just months after construction began, coinciding with the opening of Newbury Racecourse rail station. The first ever race - the Whatcombe Handicap - was won by Copper King, setting the stage for more than a century of top-class racing.

Newbury’s early success was driven by the vision of trainer John Porter and the support of King Edward VII,

with the course and its racedays quickly becoming a mainstay in the British racing calendar. The first Jumps meeting was held in 1906, and over the following decades, Newbury continued to grow in stature. In 1958, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her first winner at the track, and in 1960, the Hennessy Gold Cup (now the Coral Gold Cup) was run at Newbury for the first time, establishing a highlight of the National Hunt season.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Racecourse welcomed legendary names such as Mill Reef,

Brigadier Gerard, and Shergar, with Frankel later adding to that legacy with a winning debut in 2010. Other milestones include the launch of the Weatherbys Super Sprint in 1991, the opening of a new grandstand sponsored by Dubai Duty Free in 2010, and witnessing standout chasers such as Denman, Sprinter Sacre and Altior in recent years.

Newbury has also played an important role beyond racing During the COVID-19 pandemic, it served the local community as a vital vaccination centre and its vast estate

boasts a boutique hotel, an Ofsted rated-outstanding children’s nursery and expansive events spaces as well as accommodating over 900 residential properties

Now in its 120th year, Newbury Racecourse continues to combine tradition with a modern outlook, offering year-round racing and events. With a rich history and an exciting future, it remains one of the cornerstones of British racing.

A Global Icon in

Dubai Duty Free, now in its 42nd year of operation, has grown into one of the biggest single travel retail operators in the world.

Employing nearly 6,000 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing and it continues to grow.

To date, Dubai Duty Free has received over 800 awards including its record tenth ‘Airport Retailer of the Year’ at the prestigious Frontier Awards held in Cannes. In May 2025, Dubai Duty Free won its 24th consecutive Business Traveller Middle East Award for “Best Duty Free Shopping in the Middle East”.

Dubai Duty Free is committed to promoting Dubai through a series of high level sporting events such as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which this year marked the 25th anniversary of the WTA week and the 33rd year of the ATP week in February 2025.

The Championships was won by Mirra Andreeva, who become the youngest-ever WTA 1000 Champion and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who captured his first ATP 500 title.

Sports Sponsorship

Much awareness is also created by the operation’s involvement in horse racing and Dubai Duty Free regularly flies the flag in the UK in April and September at the historical Newbury Racecourse.

Meanwhile, the world’s premier international jockeys’ challenge, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup took place at Ascot Racecourse in August which was won the newly created Asia team.

The 29th June saw the 18th running of the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby held at The Curragh Racecourse in Ireland, which offered a rich purse of €1.25 million. The race was won by Lambourn, which is trained by Aidan O’Brien with Ryan Moore as the jockey.

This September, the distinctive Dubai Duty Free branding is back at Newbury Racecourse for the two-day Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, which marks the season finale of the operation’s horseracing sponsorship in 2025.

Other sports to benefit from Dubai Duty Free’s support include the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Race Summary: MONTASSIB drops to 5f for the first time in his career on his belated comeback, which is an obvious question mark, but he has a good record fresh and will surely go well on these terms providing conditions remain on the softer side of good. Shagraan produced a career best to land a Beverley listed race in good style 3 weeks ago and is respected back up in grade, with Rumstar also feared under a penalty having acquitted himself on his first try at the highest level in the Nunthorpe.

MILL REEF – THE IMMORTAL CHAMPION

Ian Balding with the great Mill Reef at Park House Stables in Kingsclere.

The race which honours one of the greats of the turf, the legendary Mill Reef, stages its 52nd running today.

The 6f contest, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, has been a constant feature at Newbury since Mon Fils, trained by Richard Hannon snr, captured its inaugural running, going on to win the 2,000 Guineas the following year.

Mill Reef had recently been retired when the race was named after him. Then a four-year-old, he had been put on a path towards the 1972 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but he never made it to Longchamp a second time after suffering a career-ending injury on the gallops in Kingsclere, near Newbury, where he was trained by Ian Balding.

Yetbythenhislegacywasalreadysealed.Awinneratthehighestlevel overthreeseasons,histhree-year-oldcampaignfeaturedtriumphsin the 1971 Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Arc, a sequence that has not been matched since.

His wins at two included the Gimcrack Stakes by ten lengths and Dewhurst Stakes by four. At Newbury he won the Greenham Stakes byfourlengthstostartfavouriteforthe2,000GuineasatNewmarket and, afterfinishingsecondbehindanothergreatBrigadierGerard,he was never defeated again.

Indeed, at the end of a year which included a six-length triumph in the King George and three length Arc victory, Mill Reef secured ‘Horse of the Year’ honours over Brigadier Gerard.

Kept in training at four when a mooted rematch on the track with his great rival never materialised, Mill Reef won the Prix Ganay and Coronation Cup, which proved to be his final start.

Balding and Mellon combined to win the Mill Reef Stakes in 1982 when the brilliant Forest Flower, Europe’s top two-year-old filly that season, capturedtheprize.Baldingwastowintheraceasecondtime with Firebreak 2001.

MonFilswasoneoffourwinnersoftheraceforHannonsnr, themost byanytrainerandarecordheshareswithPeterWalwyn.PatEddery is the most successful jockey, capturing the prize on five occasions.

The race has spawned numerous subsequent Group 1 winners including, during this century, Zafeen, Excellent Art, Dark Angel, Ribchester, who won the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes the following year, and Harry Angel.

Mill Reef (left), ridden by Geoff Lewis, wins the Derby at Epsom in 1971 comfortably by two lengths.

Akkadian Thunder and veteran Jumby can fight out minor honours.
