Newbury Racecard - Saturday 19th July

Page 1

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Weatherbys Super Sprint Day, featuring seven top class races on one of Newbury’s stand-out summer racedays.

The Weatherbys Super Sprint was established in 1991 and has become a major target for speedy two-year-olds bought at auction. This is the 34th running of the race and it’s played host to some outstanding winners in the past, including the likes of Tiggy Wiggy, Happy Romance and most recently Caburn.

Many thanks to long-term sponsors Weatherbys for their continued generous support. A big thanks also to today’s other partners; BetVictor, Darley, European Breeders Fund and new sponsor Hallgarten and Novum Wines.

The feature race is the Weatherbys Super Sprint, featuring 20 runners over the minimum distance of five furlongs. The favourite, locally trained Royal Ascot winner Havana Hurricane, will be looking to add some valuable prize money to his CV The third race of the afternoon is the Hallgarten & Novum Wines Hackwood Stakes, a Group 3 contest over six furlongs. Last year’s winner and track record holder, Elite Status, will be aiming to return to winning form for the Karl Burke stable.

We’re thrilled to welcome racegoers to Filly’s today, our new sparkling wine bar in partnership with Chapel Down. Opened last week, this exciting addition is located next to the Hampshire Stand and has already proved popular Be sure to stop by and experience it for yourself

We’re excited to welcome BRIT award-nominated artists Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Ella Henderson this evening, as they make their debuts on the Party in the Paddock stage. Head to the main stage in the Grandstand Enclosure at approximately 6pm to catch the start of the evening’s entertainment

There’s plenty more to come this summer, including the finale of the popular Summer Evening Series with Hits Radio on Thursday 24th July, courtesy of The Ibiza Beach Club This meeting promises an evening of thrilling racing and Ibiza vibes, featuring a live saxophonist and the ultimate summer closing party. 2025 marks our biggest year of music yet, with four spectacular music racedays across July, August, and September. Following today’s event, we’re excited to welcome Bjorn Again on Friday 15th August, Clean Bandit on Saturday 16th August for Visit Malta Hungerford Day, and James Bay on Saturday 20th September as part of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend. Discounted tickets and hospitality packages are available for a limited time via our website.

Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable day and look forward to welcoming you back next week for the finale of our Summer Evening Series with The Ibiza Beach Club

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Caburn taking the win in the 2024 Weatherbys Super Sprint

Super Sprint History

It is 34 years since the first running of The Weatherbys Super Sprint, and its innovative race conditions see it open to horses that were sold at public auction as yearlings or two-year-olds for £65,000 or less. The weights are allocated so that each horse running carries 1lb less for every £5,000 less than £65,000. Those competing will be bidding for a share of the total prize fund of £250,000.

The race was specifically framed to give good value horses the chance of a big pay day and took place for the first time in 1991 under the name “Newbury Sales Super Sprint Trophy”. It was in 1993 that Weatherbys sponsored the race for the first time and gave it the title “Weatherbys Super Sprint”.

The race has taken place every year since 1991, apart from 2007 due to heavy rainfall. The most successful trainer is Richard Hannon Sr who won the race seven times courtesy of Lyric Fantasy, Risky, Miss Stamper, Presto Vento, If Paradise, Lady Livius and Monsieur Chevalier. His son Richard Hannon Jr. has won the race four times and Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey have each had three winners of the race. From a riding angle, four jockeys have won the race twice, Richard Hughes (Monsieur Chevalier and Tiggy

Wiggy), Michael Hills (Brief Glimpse and Superstar Leo), Michael Roberts (Lyric Fantasy and Good Girl) and Sean Levey (Happy Romance and Gubbass).

Many horses to have run in The Weatherbys Super Sprint have gone on to achieve great things, most recently 2020 winner Happy Romance who is now a seven-time winner, including twice at Group level and Grade 1 placed – earning nearly £750,000 in price money. Not bad for a £25,000 yearling purchase!

Hannon - four time winner.

Richard

Arguably the most successful winners in the race’s history are Tiggy Wiggy and Lyric Fantasy.

Tiggy Wiggy built on her success with a win in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes before completing the hat-trick in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. The flying filly also finished in the Classic frame when coming home in third in the 1000 Guineas. Lyric Fantasy, aka ‘The Pocket Rocket’, became the Champion 2yo in the same year as landing the super Sprint and indeed the highest rated filly of 1992. Her most notable success, however, was in the Nunthorpe Stakes in which she became one of only three juveniles to win a Group One race in open-age competition.

Temple Meads landed the first prize of £100,000 in 2010, before winning the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes later in the season back here at Newbury.

The 2009 winner Monsieur Chevalier went on to achieve glory in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, emulating Risky who had completed the same double seventeen years earlier. Unfortunately, injury prevented his return to the track as a three-year-old, but he returned to his best form as a four-year-old when finishing second in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and winning a Listed race at Goodwood.

In 2005, we saw a shock when the Martin Dwyer-ridden Lady Livius stormed home to win at odds of 100/1, the longest priced winner to date. Apart from Peniaphobia and Tiggy Wiggy, who did it in successive years, the only time that a horse has dipped under

the minute mark in this five-furlongs sprint was in 2000 when Superstar Leo stormed home in 59.19 seconds before going on to finish second in two Group 1s, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the Phoenix Stakes.

Fillies have a good strike rate, possibly down to the 5lb allowance that they receive from the colts. 18 of the 33 renewals of this race have been won by fillies. Happy Romance was victorious in 2020 for the successful team of Richard Hannon and Sean Levey, who teamed up again to win with Gubbass in 2021. The talented colt was given a fine ride by his jockey and showed fine subsequent juvenile form, finishing third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes.

The 2022 winner Eddie’s Boy progressed to win a Group 3 race in France later in the season before being sold for 320,000 Guineas to race on in Qatar.

Relief Rally was a hugely impressive winner of the race last year and came to Newbury having been beaten by a nose in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot in her previous outing. She went on land the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York and would have been fancied for Group 1 glory in the Cheveley Park Stakes but had to miss the race.

Caburn ran on extremely well under Dylan Hogan to grab the lucrative prize in the final strides in what was a thrilling renewal in 2024. It was a fantastic result for young trainer Jack Jones who registered the biggest success of his training career so far and the race didn’t work out too badly, with Time For Sandals the 2025 Commonwealth Cup winner in third!

A Super Sprint Great -

Tiggy Wiggy

Martin Stevens reflects on Tiggy Wiggy’s Weatherbys Super Sprint success 11 years on.

The Weatherbys Super Sprint might not be a black-type race but its roll of honour features some brilliantly talented horses, from the ‘pocket rocket’ Lyric Fantasy through the speedball Superstar Leo to the popular rags-to-riches filly Mrs Danvers.

This year marks the eleventh anniversary of another of the five-furlong dash’s iconic winners: the captivatingly quick Tiggy Wiggy.

It was in July 2014 that the bay filly, trained by Richard Hannon for Potensis Bloodstock, Chris Giles and Merriebelle Stable, blazed a trail under Richard Hughes and bolted up by six lengths at Newbury, stopping the clock in under one minute.

Tiggy Wiggy had already blown away the opposition in a maiden at Kempton, a conditions race at Salisbury and the National Stakes at Sandown and finished second in the Marygate Stakes at York and Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

She rounded off an outstanding season with decisive victories in the Lowther Stakes at York and Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket to be crowned joint-champion two-year-old filly in Europe with Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Found.

Tiggy Wiggy might not have

subsequently achieved as much as Found, who landed the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and defeated Golden Horn to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but she did a lot more than many other physically forward juvenile sprinters, finishing a gallant third to Legatissimo in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Tiggy Wiggy was bred by Paul and Marie McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud under the CBS Bloodstock banner. She hailed from the fifth crop of her then still upwardly mobile sire Kodiac and was the second produce of the winning mare Kheleyf’s Silver, a Kheleyf half-sister to Norfolk Stakes scorer Masta Plasta.

Paul McCartan remembers: “It was still early days for Kodiac and he was standing at small money, but we’d seen some very nice horses by him and so decided to use him and sent him Kheleyf’s Silver, a lovely young mare from a fast family.

“We were happy with the foal, who turned out to be Tiggy Wiggy. She developed into a nice yearling: straightforward, with good limbs, strength in depth and action. She always looked quick, but obviously we never dreamed she’d turn out to be that quick!

“She had her first run on the 29th of

March and won the Cheveley Park Stakes on the 27th of September, so it was a very enjoyable six months following her.”

McCartan pinpoints her Weatherbys Super Sprint success as her signature run.

“It was probably her best performance,” he says. “She seemed to accelerate twice, which is something you rarely see. She was really amazing that day.

“Funnily enough I’d been at Newmarket for the July meeting the week before, and I’d bumped into Richard Hannon’s senior head lad Tony Gorman on the way out and had a quick chat with him. I said it was a pity she hadn’t run in the Cherry Hinton Stakes that week and he replied, ‘don’t worry, she’ll win the Super Sprint’.”

Tiggy Wiggy is one of a number of blisteringly quick horses bred by Ballyphilip Stud, along with Battaash and Harry Angel. Fairy Godmother, who weaved her way to victory in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, is another farm graduate.

“She might not be the fastest horse we’ve bred, but she’s definitely one of them,” says the unfailingly modest McCartan with a laugh.

Tiggy Wiggy was bought by agents who are also associated with numerous fast horses in Peter and Ross Doyle. The father-son talent scouts bid £41,000 to secure her from the Ballyphilip Stud draft at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale of 2013.

“Doncaster has been a happy hunting ground for the Doyle family for a long time,” says Ross Doyle. “I remember the first time we saw Tiggy Wiggy quite clearly. We were doing our shortlist before the trainers and owners had got there, and she caught the eye as a very nice, neat and racy filly.

“She was a good combination of Kodiac and Kheleyf, as they both get good-looking horses, and she was from a fast family. She also came from a very good home, of course; the McCartans are brilliant breeders. We felt lucky to get her for £41,000.”

The Doyles’ haul at that year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale included three other high-class two-year-olds in

Estidhkaar, Kool Kompany and Limato, but Tiggy Wiggy upstaged them all in 2014.

“It was an unbelievable season,” recalls Ross. “She ran eight times, won six and was beaten narrowly into second on the other two occasions. She didn’t win again at three but finishing third in a deep renewal of the 1000 Guineas was an amazing effort considering she was such a speedball.

“Richard’s team did a wonderful job keeping the lid on her at home, and Hughesy was magnificent with her. She’d think about things a bit when she got to the track so he’d take his legs out of the irons for a while before each race to calm her down.

“She must have been very tough, and possessed a lot of class, to stretch out to a mile in the Guineas like she did. She let down into a lovely model and was sold at the end of her three-year-old season to Coolmore for 2,100,000gns.

“She was the filly of a lifetime for everyone involved with her. We wouldn’t mind another one like her, that’s for sure.”

Coolmore sent Tiggy Wiggy to their own sire phenomenon Galileo for her first five seasons at paddocks. Four of the resultant foals have run and three have won, including her first produce, the colt Year Of The Tiger, who finished third in the Vertem Futurity at two but was sadly fatally injured on his first run at three. Her fourth foal, High Chieftess, won one race but was sold late last year, in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify, for US$525,000.

The mare, now 13, was sent to Australia in 2023, in foal to Frankel to southern-hemisphere time. The resultant colt was sold at the Yearling Sales this April, where he realised AUS$750,000. Interestingly, top Australian trainer Chris Waller, was involved in the purchase.

Tiggy Wiggy has also had a St Mark’s Basilica colt in 2024 and then visited Wootton Bassett.

Australia might be the best in the world at producing sprinters, but its gene pool will surely still be enhanced by the top-class and tenacious Tiggy Wiggy, a true legend of the Weatherbys Super Sprint.

Millman eyes third Weatherbys Super Sprint success with Anthelia

There are few bigger fans than Rod Millman of the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint, in which declarations include the Windsor Castle winner Havana Hurricane and the Lily Agnes winner Ali Shuffle, plus his own hope Anthelia.

Millman has already won the Weatherbys Super Sprint twice, besides which he’s had several placed and plenty more in the money, which is offered down to tenth place as usual. As a National Stakes winner, Anthelia has a live chance of giving him a third win.

“The Weatherbys Super Sprint has been very good to me,” he agrees. “Lord Kintyre’s win in 1997 kept me in business, because without it we’d have been in danger of disappearing. Bettys Hope won for us in 2019, and we’ve also had seconds with Cop Hill Lad and Woolhampton, plus a few thirds and fourths and so on.

“It’s a lovely race and it gives the smaller owner a good chance of winning a big pot. I think we gave three grand for Bettys Hope and she won £123,000 in the Super Sprint.”

Millman’s runner this year cost only a little more than Bettys Hope, and whatever happens

today the £6,000 he paid for the Supremacy half-sister to useful sprinter Punchbowl Flyer at Goffs last August looks money very well spent now that she has won three of her four starts, including that Listed race at Sandown, which is often a stepping stone to bigger things.

At first glance Anthelia’s more recent fifth over six furlongs at Newmarket was a little disappointing unless it was lack of stamina that beat her, but Millman doesn’t subscribe to that view and has an alternative explanation.

“It wasn’t stamina that beat Anthelia at Newmarket,” he insists. “She stays all right, and I blame myself as I got the tactics wrong.

“I thought another horse who we were drawn next to would make the running, as she’d made all the time before. My instructions were to follow her and make sure she

didn’t get too far back, and then we were flat footed mid-race. With different tactics I think we’d have gone close. She’s tough and hardy, and she’s come out of the Newmarket race well.”

He adds: “As I said when she won the National Stakes at Sandown the time before, it’s been a long time since we’ve had one that’s got to the top of our gallop as strongly as she does, but she’s obviously got plenty of speed too and I don’t think dropping back to five furlongs will be a problem. My son Patrick broke her in, and from very early she looked a flying machine.

“The Super Sprint offers a lot of prize money, and although she’s got a penalty for her Listed win she’s still fairly low in the weights and it allows her regular rider Lewis Edmunds to ride. He knows her very well and he’s often underestimated. He’s a horseman as well as a jockey and he rides very well.”

Last weekend’s shock July Cup winner Richard Hughes will have a live chance of adding another very valuable sprint pot, as he runs filly-in-form Our Cody.

Saturday’s win with 66-1 chance No Half Measures came in a race in which the former champion jockey rode one of its very best winners, Oasis Dream in 2003, and the same can be said of the Weatherbys Super Sprint, as his second win in the race as a jockey in 2014 came on the brilliant Tiggy Wiggy.

A National Stakes winner, like Anthelia, Tiggy Wiggy was a sensational six-length winner at Newbury, and she went on to Group-race success in the Lowther and the Cheveley Park before finishing third in the following year’s 1000 Guineas. Hughes isn’t suggesting for one

minute that Our Cody might be another Tiggy Wiggy but he expects her to be in the money.

He says: “My son bid on Our Cody and we got her for only three grand, but her form is very strong. Her second at Chelmsford to Venetian Lace reads well now and then she won very easily at Windsor. Both races were over five furlongs, and she’ll love the firm ground”

Reflecting on his time in the saddle on Tiggy Wiggy, he said: “She was one in a million. She was the best horse in the Super Sprint and started favourite, and as she was so fast I just let her rip. She was much too good for them and never saw another horse, coming home a mile clear.

“She went on to prove herself a proper Group 1 two-year-old, and her third in the following year’s Guineas was a hell of an effort as she couldn’t possibly have stayed with all the speed she had.

“I rode her the same way over the mile at Newmarket, as there was no point in trying to change anything, and I just tried to hang on for dear life. It just shows how tough she was. It was a massive run.”

Race preview from Weatherbys

We have been extremely proud to sponsor the Weatherbys Super Sprintforover30years,and20have been declared as another speedy two-year-old looks to etch their nameontheillustriousrollofhonour.

It is a high-class renewal, and the field is headed by Havana Hurricane, arrivinghereontheback ofanimpressivevictoryintheListed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. Previously an eye-catching second in the Woodcote Stakes, Eve Johnson Houghton’s Havana Gold colt looks extremely well-treated at the weights – heading the field on officialratingswithamarkof100.

The Woodcote form is wellrepresented here, with the third Raakeb and fourth Logi Bear also renewing rivalry – both trained by Richard Hannon, who has won the race four times. The former, a Ten Sovereigns colt, has backed that Epsomrunupwithtwodecentrunsin competitiveGroup2eventsandhas strongforminthebook. However,he mustcontendwithtopweightinthis contest. Logi Bear disappointed in theWindsorCastlelasttimebutwas only two lengths behind the winner at Goodwood earlier in the season andwouldbeinterestingifreturning tothatform.

Karl Burke has trained the fourth in this contest for four years running and looks to have a good chance

of improving on that finish with Ali Shuffle The A’Ali filly won all of her first three career starts, including the Lily Agnes at Chester, before just narrowly denied in a Group 3 at Chantilly. She found her good run of formcometoahaltlasttimebutisin therighthandstobounceback.

Cotai Belle has won her last two for Richard Fahey, scoring in a Haydock nursery

Rod Millman searches for a third victory in the contest and relies on Listed National Stakes winner Anthelia TheSupremacyfillystayed on really nicely to take the strong Sandowncontestandranwellwhen fifth in the Listed Empress Fillies’ Stakes last time, perhaps making herchallengefromtoofarback. She looks well treated from a low weight here.

Race Summary: Some promising fillies on show here, with the well-bred SEA THE WONDER taken to make it 2-2 following an impressive start to her career at Chelmsford. This is a much tougher assignment, but she can be expected to take a significant step forward here with that experience to draw upon. Newcomer Gold Penny makes plenty of appeal on paper and could be the pick of the Gosden-trained duo ahead of Glistening, while Consent and Wujjood are also of interest given their profiles.
