Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of Visit Malta Hungerford Weekend, featuring Jessie J live after racing. To begin, I would like to extend my thanks to this weekend’s title partner, Visit Malta, and today’s sponsors: Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, D&H, TPT Fire, Darley, the European Breeders’ Fund, BetVictor and AP&C, who are supporting local charity Swings and Smiles. Courtesy of Visit Malta’s generosity, one lucky racegoer will win a dream holiday to Malta today. More information on the prize draw is included later in the racecard, and the fact you are reading this means you are likely already entered into the draw - best of luck! In addition, Visit Malta is also generously giving away a holiday to one of the jockeys riding in today’s Hungerford Stakes. The jockey draw will take place before the Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes and will be conducted by the High Commissioner of Malta - good luck to all riders! Today’s opening race is the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Geoffrey Freer Stakes, a Group 3 contest over 1m5f, which has increased in value this year to £100,000. The standout horse is the William Haggas-trained Dubai Honour, a multiple Group 1 winner who is making his first turf start in this country for more than two years, having been campaigned internationally. The feature race is, of course, the Group 2 Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes, with nine horses declared for the straight seven-furlong contest. Last year’s Group 1 winner Never So Brave will be hoping to give his owners another Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes success, following their victory with More Thunder 12 months ago. It is also great to see our recent Hackwood Stakes winner, Symbol of Honour, return to Newbury for the Godolphin team. There’s plenty to be excited about after racing this evening as we welcome Jessie J to the Racecourse’s famous Party in the Paddock stage. Head to the Grandstand Enclosure after racing to enjoy this evening’s entertainment, with the show scheduled to start between 5:30pm – 5:45pm. Looking ahead, our inaugural Schools’ Celebration Day takes place on Wednesday 26th August. We’re delighted to be offering free admission to all pupils and parents, with every child ticket including complimentary admission for up to two parents or guardians. Pupils from more than 200 schools have already registered, with 4,500 free tickets claimed – it’s set to be a great day! Families can look forward to a whole host of free fun and entertainment with free ticket registration still open - further details can be found via the QR code on the next page. Finally, thank you to all our racegoers for joining us today. We hope you enjoy your time with us and hope to welcome you back for Schools’ Celebration Day on Wednesday 26th August. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do: 1.
Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: •
‘To win’ is for your
•
‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your
horse to come first. horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. •
What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
•
The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.
Please gamble responsibly. For more information visit www.gambleaware.co.uk
