How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

A Global Icon in

Whether it is on the golfing greens, the tennis courts, the racecourse or even the high-seas, sponsorship and the support of international events has been an integral part of Dubai Duty Free’s marketing strategy since 1983. And more than just marketing the company itself, these sporting endeavors have also helped to propel global perception of the emirate.

The 2024 sporting ‘season’ began in January with the Hero Dubai Desert Classic which was won by Northern Irish player Rory McIlroy for the fourth time. As a patron sponsor of the tournament, Dubai Duty Free took part in the Pro-AM competition and entertained a number of guests in style at the Emirates Golf Club.

The 2024 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free, went fantastically well.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 31st anniversary of the Championships which took place from 18th February –2nd March was won by Jasmine Paolini and Ugo Humbert, who both claimed their maiden Dubai titles.

Much awareness is also created by the operation’s involvement in horse racing and Dubai Duty Free regularly flies the flag in the UK at Newbury Racecourse for the start of the flat race season with the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend on 19th – 20th April.

Sports Sponsorship

The 30th June saw the 17th running of the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby held at The Curragh Racecourse in Ireland, which offered a rich purse of €1.25 million. The race was won by Los Angeles, which is trained by Aidan O’Brien with Ryan Moore as the jockey.

Meanwhile, the world’s premier international jockeys’ challenge, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup took place at Ascot Racecourse in August. Four teams representing Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, Rest of the World and The Ladies team competed in a thrilling six-race showdown, which was won by the latter for the second consecutive year

The airport retailer returned to Ireland as an official partner of the Amgen Irish Open, which was held at Royal Co Down in Northern Ireland in September

Also in September, the distinctive Dubai Duty Free branding is back at Newbury Racecourse for the two-day Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, which marks the season finale of the operation’s horseracing sponsorship in 2024.

Other sports to benefit from Dubai Duty Free’s support include the Dubai Premier Padel P1 and the Emirates Dubai 7S to name a few.

Race Summary: I MAXIMUS has let favourite backers down on a couple of occasions but there were still signs of greenness at Kempton and this evidently well-regarded colt is given one more chance. Now heading into handicaps, George Boughey’s colt can double his tally at the expense of Green Icon, who is improving in leaps and bounds and arrives chasing a hat-trick. TIMEFORM VIEW Recorded a fourth career success when coming from off the pace to land an 11-runner Leicester handicap (1m, good to soft) in May. Far from disgraced at Royal Ascot next time but it’s been downhill all the way since and she needs to get back on track now upped in trip.

TIMEFORMVIEW Fair form in 3 qualifying runs and found some improvement when third of 9 upped to this trip on his recent handicap debut at Sandown (soft). Another step forward will be needed in order to go two places better here but, with just 4 runs under his belt, he can hardly be labelled as exposed.

TIMEFORMVIEW Has struggled all 5 starts up to a mile this season and, unless this step up in trip helps to

to form, a similar outcome seems likely here. TFRHIIII 13

TIMEFORM VIEW Yet to get his head in front (0-7) but he’s gone pretty close at Newcastle (10.2f) and Kempton (1m) the last twice. Will be a danger to all if able to back those efforts up now returned to turf, albeit it’s easy to have reservations in that regard (little impact all 3 previous runs on turf). TFRHHHII

TIMEFORM VIEW Positive start to this season when fourth in an Ascot handicap off a 7lb higher mark than this. However, he’s failed to build on that since, looking like a non-stayer upped to this trip the last twice. TFRHHIII

Race Summary: Provided that MUSTAZEED gets away on terms a third C&D victory could be on the cards for this 6-y-o. He shaped as though his turn was again near at Ascot in July before completely blowing the start at Goodwood next time. More Thunder looks a big threat on the back of his creditable handicap debut second at Chester, while unexposed duo Galyx and Odin Legacy also need considering.
