Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to BetVictor Hungerford Day, a highlight of our flat racing calendar.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners for their generous support today; title sponsor BetVictor, TPT Fire, European Breeders Fund and Chapel Down. We are also thrilled to welcome new partner Childwickbury Stud to today’s card.

Named after the local town, today’s feature race is the £125,000 Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes. Established in 1949 – and celebrating its 75th anniversary today – the race was initially run over a mile and a half, before becoming one of the most prestigious seven-furlong races in the calendar.

Once again, this year’s field looks highly competitive, with 2023’s winner Witch Hunter and 2022’s winner Jumby lining up.

Today’s meeting follows yesterday’s action where trainer and jockey duo, George Boughey and Billy Loughnane enjoyed a double courtesy of Hopewell Rock’s win in the day’s third race and Englemere’s triumph in the Listed Highclere Thoroughbred Racing St Hugh’s Stakes.

For those interested in getting closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for a Trip to the Start ahead of the 2:25pm and 3pm races. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred race.

Following today’s racing, one of the most successful British rappers of all time, Dizzee Rascal, takes to the Party in the Paddock stage, performing live after racing at approximately 6:30pm. Ahead of Dizzee, DJ Emily Nash takes to the stage to get everyone in the mood at around 5:35pm. If you fancy getting up close and personal to Emily and Dizzee you can courtesy of a Close Proximity upgrade, these are available from our Ticket Sales booth at the foot of the Berkshire Stand and are priced at just £14.

The Dubai Duty Free International Weekend then returns on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September and the Early Bird discount – guaranteeing the lowest priced tickets – is only available until next Friday (23rd August). Oktoberfest’s then back during the BetVictor Flat Season Finale on Friday 25th & Saturday 26th October, meaning we’ve got two thrilling autumn weekends packed with top quality racing and entertainment to look forward to.

As ever, there is free Wi-Fi available to use today in all public areas and I would like to remind our racegoers that a free shuttle bus will be available outside the Eastern Entrance from 7pm - 9pm running to Newbury bus station.

Thank you for choosing to spend you day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable time, and we will see you again very soon.

Thank You to Today’s Race Sponsors

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Race Summary: Perhaps one of the 3-y-os will come to fore in this useful handicap, with a chance taken on ZABRISKIE POINT, who has been better than the result in 2 strong 3-y-o only handicaps this summer and has dropped 4lb in the meanwhile. Spanish Blaze can have his recent Glorious Goodwood effort marked up and is second choice ahead of Starlore, who failed to fire at Royal Ascot but his Goodwood promise prior to that is still fresh in the memory United Approach looks the pick of the older contingent.

Betting

Forecast: 11-4

Markoon (IRE), 5-1 Ciro di Marzio (USA), 6-1 Houstonn (GB), 8-1 Voyage (GB), Golden West (GB), 9-1 Midair (GB), 10-1 T’Challa (GB), 14-1 Ville Natale (GB)

Race Summary: MARKOON took another sizeable step forward as he took his record to 2-3 on return in novice company at Newmarket (1m) 4 weeks ago, finding extra when challenged. A well-made sort with definite potential for better still now handicapping, he holds sound claims now his stamina is tested further Ciro di Marzio with headgear enlisted is a threat along with T’challa. A couple of lines of Midair’s form ties him in closely with a couple here and first-time blinkers could perk him up. 1-2-3: 1.MARKOON (IRE)
