Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Newbury for our Summer August Raceday, the first of two days of racing, which culminate with Dizzee Rascal performing live tomorrow at BetVictor Hungerford Day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for their generous support of today’s card; BetVictor, the family and friends of Tom Mitchell, European Breeders Fund, TPT Fire, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and Christopher Smith Associates.

The feature race of the afternoon is the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing St Hugh’s Stakes, a Listed race over an extended five furlongs for two-year-old fillies. At the time of writing, the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained Adrestia heads the market, and the daughter of Havana Grey will be looking to add to her two recent successes, the latest at Sandown Park last month.

For those interested in getting closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for a Trip to the Start ahead of the 2:05pm and 4:20pm races. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s action here at Newbury, we have one of the season’s highlights with the BetVictor Hungerford Stakes (Group 2) and the BetVictor Geoffery Freer Stakes (Group 3). With last year’s Hungerford winner, Witch Hunter and course specialists such as Alaasy declared, there is plenty to look forward to over the next 24 hours and the very best of luck to all connections.

Following tomorrow’s action, one of the most successful British rappers of all time, Dizzee Rascal, makes his Newbury Racecourse debut on the Party in the Paddock stage, performing live after racing. If you fancy joining us tickets and close proximity viewing upgrades are available on our website until 11:59pm this evening or on the gate from 11:30am tomorrow.

The Dubai Duty Free International Weekend then returns on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September and the Early Bird discount – guaranteeing you the lowest priced tickets – is only available until next Friday (23rd August). October will then see Oktoberfest back during the BetVictor Flat Season Finale on Friday 25th & Saturday 26th October, meaning we’ve got two thrilling Autumn weekends packed with top quality racing and entertainment to look forward to.

As ever, there is free Wi-Fi available to use today in all public areas and if you have any questions or queries during your time with us, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our team.

Thank you for choosing to spend you day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable time, and we will see you again tomorrow for BetVictor Hungerford Day with Dizzee Rascal.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.
