Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale and the final day of our 2023/24 Jumps season.

My thanks go to our partners today, the family of John Haine, the British European Breeders Fund, Goffs UK, Mr John H W Finch, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and BetVictor, who are the title partner for the two-day fixture.

For those interested in getting closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for the popular Trips to the Jump which will take place ahead of the 2:40pm, 4:25pm and 5:00pm races today. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred trip.

Following the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale our attention will turn to the start of the Flat season on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April when Classic hopefuls will be in action across the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture will also see the return of the popular Beer Festival featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. There’s a whole host to look forward to across the weekend with discounted Early Bird tickets available until 11:59pm tonight.

A new ticketing option for 2024 is our ‘Four Saturdays’ Pass which entitles racegoers admission to four big Saturday racedays - Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials, Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day, Dubai Duty Free International and the Coral Gold Cup - from just £89, however the Early Bird discount also ends on these passes at 11:59pm this evening.

Earlier this week we announced the return of our famous Party in the Paddock raceday for Weatherbys Super Sprint Day on Saturday 20th July, with a live headline set from super-producer SIGALA. Accompanied by guest vocalists, the award-winning DJ will make his Newbury Racecourse debut after the afternoon’s racing. Tickets are on general sale now – at the discounted Super Early Bird rate – but these super discounted tickets won’t be around for long. A range of hospitality packages are also available.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today and hope you enjoyed the 2023/24 Jumps season. We’d love to see you again for the start of Flat season on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

JOhN haiNe 1942-1998

John Haine, Winter Fair, Chepstow Photo by Bernard

John Haine and style were synonymous, on horseback, his manner of dress, his choice of car or his preferred eateries, were all about style When Brough Scott said, “Maybe John was never destined for old age and slippers”, he summed up the man to perfection.

John’s life revolved around horses from a very early age as a star performer in the show ring, and a competitive follower with the Beaufort Hounds. Apprenticed to Bob Turnell at the earliest opportunity, he rode his first winner on Misconception at Bath in 1958, but after about 30 further successes on the flat, his riding weight dictated a move to the National Hunt. Highlights of his jumping career include wins on Buona Notte in the Gloucestershire Hurdle, and the tote Champion Novices’ Chase (1964), both at Cheltenham. Two more Gloucestershire Hurdle wins followed on Chorus (1967) and Barnard (1971). Other major victories include the Scottish National on Popham Down (1964), the Imperial Cup on Sir Thopas (1967), the Topham Trophy on Charter Flight (1970) and the Welsh National on Charlie H (1972). However, it was winning the 1966 Champion Hurdle on Salmon Spray that gave John his most thrilling victory – horse and jockey matching dash and brilliance, performing a class act to the delight of the Cheltenham Festival crowd.

Ten years as a trainer brought further successes, most notably with Roger Bacon and Jenny Splendid, who enjoyed her retirement in John’s paddocks at Crudwell. Involvement in racehorse breeding and transport maintained John’s participation in the racing world he loved.

Remembering his mischievous smile, and his penchant for a punt, many friends will be raising their glasses to him today as a man who not only loved racing, but most of all loved the horse.

His wife, Sue, summed it up beautifully when she said that her life with John has been “sometimes good, sometimes bad, but never boring!”
