Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale here at Newbury.
My thanks go to BetVictor today as the title partner of the two-day fixture. We would also like to welcome Steve Jobar - and all those involved with the Motor Neurone Disease Association - who are hosting a fundraising event in our Racegoers’ Restaurant.
The Motor Neurone Disease Association is devoted to supporting every family affected by MND and we hope everyone raising funds for this vital cause here today have an enjoyable day.
For those interested in getting closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for the popular Trips to the Jump which will take place ahead of the 2:30pm and 4:43pm races today. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred trip.
Following the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale our attention will turn to the start of the Flat season on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April when Classic hopefuls will be in action across the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture will also see the return of the popular Beer Festival featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. There’s a whole host to look forward to across the weekend with discounted Early Bird tickets available until 11:59pm tomorrow
A new ticketing option for 2024 is our ‘Four Saturdays’ Pass which entitles racegoers admission to four big Saturday racedays - Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials, Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day, Dubai Duty Free International and the Coral Gold Cup - from just £89, however the Early Bird discount also ends on these passes at 11:59pm tomorrow.
Earlier this week we announced the return of our famous Party in the Paddock raceday for Weatherbys Super Sprint Day on Saturday 20th July, with a live headline set from super-producer SIGALA. Accompanied by guest vocalists, the award-winning DJ will make his Newbury Racecourse debut after the afternoon’s racing. Tickets are on general sale now – at the discounted Super Early Bird rate – but these super discounted tickets won’t be around for long. A range of hospitality packages are also available.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today, and we hope to see you again tomorrow for the second day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale.
Wishing you an enjoyable and profitable afternoon.
Mark Leigh Interim CEO and Finance Director Newbury RacecourseThere are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) are three words which change lives forever. Today, and every day six more people will be diagnosed and given those devastating words. There are currently no effective treatments and there is no cure for the progressive neurological disease which can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. Those three words have a huge impact.
The Motor Neurone Disease Association is devoted to supporting every family affected by MND by providing the information they need to talk to their children about a diagnosis. It is vital they feel empowered to make decisions and have the tools they need to face the future together
Our branches and groups are best placed to provide direct support for local families like ex-jockey Steve Jobar and his loved ones. Reading and West Berkshire Branch has a team of dedicated volunteers determined to support all people affected by MND and offers regular Drop-in meetings as well as specialised 1:1 emotional support. They also provide financial support grants to help address the increased burden of rising care costs, grants to directly aid carers and young people as well as those to improve quality of life such as relaxing therapies and counselling.
Ultimately, the Motor Neurone Disease Association is determined to make MND a condition that people can live with, rather than die from, by funding research towards finding treatments and, ultimately, a cure. There has never been a more important – or exciting time - for MND research In the past ten years alone, MND researchers have discovered more about this devastating disease than at any other point in the last century. And we’re more determined than ever to capitalise on this extraordinary progress.
Your incredible donations will be split evenly between Reading and West Berkshire Branch and the MND research programme.
Thank YOU from everyone at Reading and West Berkshire Branch and the MND Association for your generous support today. Every pound will make a difference to people living with and affected by MND today and tomorrow MND can be cured – if it is well funded.

Steve Jobar experienced plenty of bumps and broken bones as a tough as teak jump jockey. But nothing in life prepared him for the shock two years ago of being diagnosed with a disease without a cure or any effective treatment.
Coming to terms with motor neurone disease has been the harshest challenge he has ever faced. Resilient and private by nature Steve wouldn’t know how to make a fuss. But like Doddie Weir and Rob Burrow he decided to go public about his illness to raise awareness about this most horrible of diseases.
Steve rode 132 winners over jumps including eleven races at Fontwell on Stickler and his biggest success came on Heighlin in the 1980
Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham. In the summer of 2022 Steve’s committee began organising today’s lunch and race with the express purpose of raising serious funds for the MND Association.
Half will go for research into a cure. The rest to their local branch who from day one have provided Steve and Dottie with constant advice, kindness, and pastoral care. First to book a table of ten was Heighlin’s trainer David Elsworth. We hoped to sell 25 tables but have ended up with a full capacity of 450 guests.
To spend time with Steve and his wife Dottie over the past two years is to understand how cruelly MND has turned their world upside down. He explains “My illness has robbed me of my speech so people cannot understand me now.
“My eating is confined to liquids, it’s hard for me to swallow, I’m losing weight and waiting for surgery to fit a feeding peg into my stomach”
After so many years away from the sport Steve has been touched by the huge support from old racing colleagues and friends. It’s as if he has never been away. He concedes “Most people with MND are much worse off than me as they have young families while I’m in my seventies and have lived life to the full.
“Dot’s family and I are all very close and they are a crucial part of the next step in this journey”
On leaving school in Sheffield aged fifteen, Steve began as an apprentice in 1964 in Wiltshire on a princely wage of £1 with Alec Kilpatrick, progressed from raw beginner to the most experienced rider in the yard and recalls that the massive cultural lifestyle changes in the Sixties passed him by. He then enjoyed a long and fruitful liaison with Stan Mellor before retiring from the saddle in 1985 to concentrate on a new role as a builder while spending much of his spare time as a high-flying glider pilot
Steve and Dottie have been together for 44 years although it took his MND diagnosis to point them towards the altar. They are hugely grateful for the support of the MND community, in particular the Reading and West Berks branch
Dottie admits “We couldn’t possibly have managed without them. They are amazing and always there for us and everyone else who suffers from MND.”
Steve adds “Initially we hoped to raise a few thousand pounds and I’ve been overwhelmed by all the support which means we are on course to hand over well over £100,000 to the MND Association”.
