Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the BetVictor March Racing Weekend here at Newbury.
We have another exciting afternoon of Jumps racing ahead which includes the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase and our thanks go to our title sponsor, BetVictor for generously retaining the ‘Greatwood’ title. We also extend our thanks to the family and friends of Stewart Wright.
In other exciting news, Newbury Racecourse has recently announced that a record £7,000,000 worth of prize money will be on offer in 2024, which represents a 13% increase on 2023, which itself was a 16% increase on 2022. Today’s feature race, the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup, carries a total prize fund of £100,000, a £40,000 uplift on 2023.
March’s arrival means we’re now only three weeks away from the culmination of the Jumps season here at Newbury, and we’re looking forward to welcoming BetVictor back across Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd March for the jumps season finale.
For those interested in getting closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for the popular Trips to the Jump which will take place ahead of the 1:20pm, 1:55pm and 4:05pm races today. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred trip.
Please note, the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand will be closed today for a private event. However, all other areas – offering a wide range of food and drink – will be open as usual.
Following the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale our attention will turn to the start of the Flat season on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April when Classic hopefuls will be in action across the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture will also see the return of the popular Beer Festival featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. Discounted Early Bird tickets are available until Friday 22nd March.
Tickets for this year’s racedays have been on sale since November and new for 2024 is our ‘Four Saturdays’ Pass which entitles racegoers admission to four big Saturday racedays; Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials, Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day, Dubai Duty Free International and the Coral Gold Cup, from just £89. These passes have proved popular since their release and given the value they offer this doesn’t come as a surprise.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today, and we hope to see you again on Friday 22nd March for the first day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale Weekend.
Wishing you an enjoyable and profitable afternoon.
Mark Leigh Interim CEO and Finance Director Newbury RacecourseThere are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

TIMEFORM VIEW Hasn’t really looked like winning a race since his fine novice campaign way back in 2019/20 but efforts in defeat this season have been largely solid, most recently when third of 9 in handicap chase at Sandown (24.2f, good to soft) 16 days ago. Race Summary: MUSICAL SLAVE’s frailties have long been documented but he scored in similar company from a higher mark at Exeter last year and he may be worth chancing after a mildly more encouraging display at Ludlow last time. Colonel ‘Jacky’ Upton was a jockey Club Inspector of National Hunt Courses and instigated many improvements on the fences and hurdles for the safety of horses and jockeys. He always ensured that the fences were firm but fair He was a great friend of Geoffrey Freer and many good ideas were discussed whilst they were walking around the racecourse.
He retired from the Jockey Club in the early sixties due to ill health and died soon after.
His son, Pat Upton was an amateur rider but gave up race-riding due to a very bad fall in 1971 He was also a trainer for 17 years, based near Lambourn.
