Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Betfair Super Saturday, one of the highlights of Newbury’s Jump Season. Our thanks once again extend to Betfair who have sponsored this prestigious card for 12 years and have helped make it one of jump racing’s most exciting days. The Betfair Hurdle - worth £155,000 - continues to be the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and is supported by a highly competitive card; including two Grade 2 chases - the Betfair Denman Chase and Betfair Exchange Game Spirit Chase. Both chases have been won by a long list of jumping legends, a list which includes Native River and Altior, both of whom join us this afternoon to parade for racegoers at 1:40pm (approx.) in the Parade Ring. In other exciting news, following a record executive contribution, Newbury Racecourse has announced that a record £7,000,000 worth of prize money will be on offer in 2024, which represents a 13% increase on 2023, which itself was a 16% increase on 2022. There is plenty going on today, including the introduction of Newbury’s brand new, ‘Live Sessions’. This new initiative will see a number of musicians from in and around Newbury take to the stage throughout the day’s action – from 11am until 4:20pm – before local DJ, MZOURI, will bring you the Super Saturday afterparty. A Punters’ Panel (prior to the first race) as well as Trips to the Jump are also available for all racegoers today so make sure you head to the Parade Ring to mark the card and follow ex-jockey David Crosse for trips to the final fence. All other details on what’s on today can be found in this racecard. Tickets for this year’s racedays have been on sale since November and new for 2024 is our ‘Four Saturdays’ Pass which entitles racegoers admission to four big Saturday racedays; Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials, Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day, Dubai Duty Free International and the Coral Gold Cup, from just £89. These passes have proved popular since their release and given the value they offer this doesn’t come as a surprise. It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of point-to-point rider Keagan Kirkby on Sunday 4 February. Keagan was an integral member of the Paul Nicholls team, and our heartfelt condolences go to Keagan’s family and friends at this difficult time. A one-minute silence will be held before the first race at 12:40 and you can find a link to a Just Giving page to donate towards the funding of Keagan’s funeral and memorial later in this racecard. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today, and we hope to see you again for our next meeting – BetVictor March Racing - on Friday 1st March. Wishing you an enjoyable and profitable afternoon. Mark Leigh Interim CEO and Finance Director Newbury Racecourse

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Please gamble responsibly. The promising Hasthing made it 2 from 2 over hurdles with a fair bit more in hand the margin suggested at Catterick and shouldn’t be too inconvenienced by the drop in trip. Corrado was part of the team at Newbury for more than 15 years supporting on racedays as well as working on the Racecourse’s old golf course. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Corrado’s friends and family at this difficult time.

The History Of The Betfair Denman Chase

Denman, Hennessy Gold Cup 2009

The Betfair Denman Chase is one of Newbury newer races and immediately became one of the most significant conditions chases of the jumps season when it was established in 2000. The race was originally named the Aon Chase and, run over a distance of an extended 2m7f, and has become a regular destination for leading staying chasers, many of which go on to contest the Cheltenham Gold Cup. See More Business set the pattern when he captured the inaugural running the year after he landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was the first of ten winners trained by Paul Nicholls whose other winners included champions Kauto Star in 2007, Denman in 2008 and 2021 winner Secret Investor. Kauto Star and Denman both went on from Newbury to triumph in the following month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, a feat matched since by Coneygree in 2015 and Native River in 2018. The popular Denman’s connection with Newbury, where he also became one of only three horses to win two editions of the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Coral Gold Cup, in 2007 and 2009, was formally recognised when the race was renamed the Denman Chase at the time Betfair took over sponsorship in 2012. Native River is the only horse to win the Denman Chase three times after his success in 2020, while his 2018 victory established Richard Johnson as the most successful jockey in the race with four wins to his name.

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED You will occasionally see letters after a horse’s form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at this course. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here may suggest that it will run well again today.

D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.

CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.

C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.

BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well-fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.

So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well at this course and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

The History Of The Betfair Exchange Game Spirit

Altior, Betfair Exchange Chase 2020

The Betfair Exchange Game Spirit is named in honour of twenty-one-time winner Game Spirit, who raced over six seasons in the 1970’s for the Queen Mother. The race itself was first run back in 1953, with the prize going the way of Marcianus for trainer George Beeby. In 1992, it was upgraded to a Grade 2 and since 2012 the race has been sponsored by Betfair. The roll of honour features a whole host of dual winners but it was Waterloo Boy in 1992 and then 1993, who first achieved the feat. He has since been joined by the likes of Viking Flagship, Azertyuiop, Master Minded, Altior and more recently Funambule Sivola. The aforementioned Altior had a particular affinity with this race, winning it three times on the bounce between 2017 and 2020. Altior and Master Minded both won this race before winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Paul Nicholls is the top trainer with an impressive six wins with David Nicholson and Nicky Henderson one behind him on five. Nico de Boinville is the top jockey in recent years thanks to his impressive partnership with Altior however it is Ruby Walsh who has ridden the most winners, with four. Funambule Sivola has been excellent in the last two renewals for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch, seen below winning it for the second time.

The History Of The Betfair Hurdle

Persian War

The Betfair Hurdle is the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and has a long history as one of the most competitive races in the jumps calendar. When it was first run in 1963, the 2m handicap hurdle took place at Aintree and was known as the Schweppes Gold Trophy, but soon found a permanent home at Newbury. It became an annual target for Ryan Price who captured four of the first five runnings, twice with Rosyth, each winner ridden to victory by Josh Gifford. In 1968 Persian War set a weight-carrying record when he shouldered 11st 13lb to victory and the following month became the first of only two horses to win the showpiece hurdle and the Champion Hurdle. It was another 27 years before Make A Stand, trained by Martin Pipe, matched Persian War’s achievement by which time the Tote had taken over the sponsorship. Nicky Henderson holds the record for the most wins in the race, recording five successes, while Gifford, who also won the race as a trainer when Deep Sensation triumphed in 1990, retains the record for most wins as a jockey.
