A very warm welcome to all our racegoers for today’s meeting which includes Newbury’s feature Grade 1 race of the season, the Coral Challow Hurdle. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Coral for their generous sponsorship of today’s meeting; the card looks as competitive as ever. The day’s feature race boasts an illustrious roll of honour with some great winners over the past 30 years including Denman, Champ, Bravemansgame and last year’s winner Hermes Allen. There is plenty to get involved with this afternoon - especially for the little ones - with special appearances from some familiar faces such as Harry the Horse and Lego’s Chase McCain, who will be positioned in and around the Paddock Bar throughout the afternoon. The Paddock Bar will also be home to face painting and a crafts station today. Our popular Trip to the Jump – with course expert David Crosse - will take place ahead of the 1.15, 2.25 and 3.35 races, simply meet outside the Weighing Room steppings in the Grandstand Enclosure to take part. Tickets for 2024’s racedays are now on sale and new for next year is our ‘Four Saturdays’ Pass which entitles racegoers admission to four big Saturday racedays in 2024; Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials, Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day, Dubai Duty Free International and the Coral Gold Cup, from just £89. These passes have proved popular since their release and given the value they offer this doesn’t come as a surprise. We had the pleasure of hosting the launch event for Newbury’s edition of Monopoly earlier this year where we welcomed many of those who were involved in the game’s creation. You will notice the Racecourse has replaced a London classic, Park Lane, with the Newbury Racecourse Station sitting close by. You can purchase the game today on-site at The Entertainer’s stand in the Grandstand Enclosure. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve Robinson who, after 21 years of distinguished service, retires following today’s meeting. Steve’s been a fixture at Newbury for more than two decades and his unwavering effort and diligence as Head Groundsman has been a crucial component of the Racecourse’s continued success; I know I speak on behalf of everyone at Newbury in wishing Steve all the very best for his retirement. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff and racegoers for their ongoing support of the Racecourse and wish you all an enjoyable time today and a Happy New Year. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Please gamble responsibly.
