Welcome to the Coral Gold Cup Meeting We are very proud to be sponsoring this prestigious race meeting for the second year, with the Coral Gold Cup the thrilling centre-piece and we would like to welcome you all to Newbury Racecourse. Coral is the longest-standing and most committed sponsor in British racing, sponsoring top class races across both Flat and Jump racing that date back to the 1970s, and the Coral Gold Cup meeting is one of the biggest and best events in our portfolio. We are passionate about horse racing, and at this year’s Coral Gold Cup meeting we are celebrating the one year anniversary of the launch of The Coral Racing Club, the only free racehorse ownership club in existence. The Club is free to join and will give members the chance to experience what it’s like to own racehorses, as well as a range of other benefits. Please also visit our Coral Virtual Race Experience by the side of the parade ring, and experience what it’s like to ride in a race using a VR Headset. Jockeys that have watched it, say it’s the closest you will ever get to actually riding in a race. Finally, thank you for coming, and have a great time and enjoy yourself.

A very warm welcome to all our racegoers for our flagship meeting of the year, the Coral Gold Cup. Today’s racing looks as competitive as ever with the much-loved £250,000 Coral Gold Cup taking centre stage with legends such as Denman, Mandarin, Native River, Arkle and Many Clouds emerging victorious over the years. Our thanks go to Coral for their generous sponsorship of the two-day card, along with the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust. We are also delighted to host the traditional Retraining of Racehorses parade between the first and second race in the Parade Ring while the Injured Jockeys Fund will be in their usual position outside the Weighing Room offering all the essential Christmas gifts. Enjoy on-site entertainment including live music, a carousel, the Coral VR experience and then not one but two after parties this evening, with the popular band ‘29 Fingers’ back to lead the party in the Gold Cup Marquee. New for 2023, we are thrilled to host the inaugural Coral Gold Cup Sale by Goffs. This thoroughbred auction will take place in the winners’ enclosure after the final race this afternoon. The auction will be conducted by Goffs who have a rich history in thoroughbred sales having been established in 1866. The Coral Gold Cup Sale will offer a small, select catalogue of around 20 horses, most of which are Irish point-topointers who have travelled from Ireland to be sold. Please make sure you stick around after racing to experience this unique sale. If you are planning on joining us for the Coral Challow Hurdle Day on 30 December, we’ve extended the deadline for Early Bird tickets until 11:59pm tonight and these can be purchased on-site today. With a whole host of family fun it’s a great day for all, plus Under 18s go free! Tickets for 2024’s racedays are now on sale at the Super Early Bird rate but only until Friday 15 December so make sure you purchase soon to guarantee the best deal for next year’s action. We recently had the pleasure of hosting the launch event for Newbury’s edition of Monopoly, where we welcomed many of those who were involved in the game’s creation. You will notice the Racecourse has replaced a London classic, Park Lane, along with the Newbury Racecourse Station sitting close by. We’re looking forward to seeing the game on the shelves and it’s sure to be the short-priced favourite in the Christmas present stakes. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today. We are extremely grateful for all the support you provide us with, and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Wishing you an enjoyable and profitable afternoon. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Please gamble responsibly. RoR PARADE
Newbury – Coral Gold Cup Day December 2nd 2023 12.08pm – Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade An RoR parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring after the first race at approximately 12.08pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. Today’s six-strong parade features some familiar names who have already adapted to a new career, including the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner,
Coneygree, the 2015 Hennessey Gold Cup winner Smad Place and the 2016 winner Native River. To help stimulate demand for former racehorses within the wider equestrian market, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball. For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk
1. ASO – ridden by Laura Tylor 13-year-old by Goldneyev, formerly trained by Venetia Williams Breeder – I Pacault, A Pacault & M Pacault Aso was given to Rupert Sweeting, who is a cousin of today’s rider Laura after finishing his racing career, since then the combination have won dressage qualifiers and a dressage championship at a local venue and won and qualified for Riding Club dressage championships. We took him to Aintree for the Jockey Club RoR championships for the experience where he thought he was running in the Grand National, the first day he totally forgot all his schooling and wanted to gallop in the direction he believed the first fence would be. After spending time with him going over and over the basics his mind clicked back to riding horse and what we were asking and he went in to get a 5th in the intro, 8th in the prelim and 3rd in the in hand always a star class. He has an amazing mind and learns so fast he has been a pleasure to retrain and hope he will go on to have more success.
2. BALTHAZAR KING – ridden by Oliva Fforde 19-year-old by King’s Theatre, formerly trained by Philip Hobbs Breeder- Sunnyhill Stud During a long and distinguished racing career Balthazar King won 16 times, including the Cross-Country Chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. After recovering from a life-threatening injury incurred at Aintree, he was retired and enjoyed several seasons hunting with Izzi Beckett, wife of trainer Ralph. He has now moved on to be ‘schoolmaster’ for Michael Andrews, under the watchful eye of Lucinda Sims, with a view to competing in low-level dressage and show jumping. Michael says: “He is the most charming, loveable and intelligent horse.”
3. BRISTOL DE MAI – ridden by Clare Alexander 12-year-old by Saddlers Maker, formerly trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies Breeder -Jean-Yves Touzaint Bristol de Mai retired in February 2023 following a stellar racing career, he has been in his new home with his rider Clare Alexander since March, settling in beautifully to his new life; he is a big character and very intelligent. He has been out on hound exercise and autumn hunting with the Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds and Surrey Union Hunt which he really enjoys. Clare and Bristol de Mai have weekly lessons with a local event rider, and the plan for Bristol’s second career includes plenty of hunting along with hunter trials and one-day-events during the summer.
4. CONEYGREE - ridden by Sara Bradstock 16-year-old by Karinga Bay, formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder - Lord Oaksey One of the leading staying chasers of his generation and the winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark Bradstock’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won several RoR showing classes and twice qualified for the final of the Tattersalls RoR Show Series at Hickstead. Coneygree took part in the recent Cotswold Team Chase ridden by Alfie Bradstock and came up the hill towards the finish taking off just like he was winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup all over again.
5. NATIVE RIVER – ridden by Jazmin Hosgood 13-year-old gelding by Indian River, formerly trained by Colin Tizzard Breeder – Fred Mackey Following his retirement to Webb Hill Farm, Native River Aka Garfield initially enjoyed a few months out in the field. Since then, Native River has had a rather busy social calendar, he has attended a school prom, the 30th Anniversary of the Rocking Horse Nursery at Newbury Racecourse, Boodles in Bond Street and starred in numerous racecourse parades to mention a few. Alongside this he has transitioned well from racehorse to riding horse and enjoys his hacking and schooling, he absolutely thrives in his work and is a quick learner. He has recently attended dressage clinics and an RoR training day, this season the aim for Jazmin and Native River is to take part in some RoR showing classes, RoR dressage and jumping.
6. SMAD PLACE – ridden by Sarah Haydon 16-year-old gelding by Smadoun, formerly trained by Alan King Breeder – Eric Aubtee & Mme Maryse Aubree Winner of the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup, Smad Place was entrusted to Sarah Holden in 2019, although he is still owned by his wonderfully supportive owner, Mrs Peter Andrews. After a slow start due to Sarah having a baby and the restrictions during Covid, the pair have recently stepped up their activities, competing in local unaffiliated preliminary dressage events and doing cross-country schooling. The plan is to continue doing dressage before graduating to do RoR competitions in a range of disciplines.

The History Of The Coral Gold Cup
The Coral Gold Cup was first run at Cheltenham in 1957 but was moved to Newbury after three years, forging a reputation as one of the most prestigious races in jumps racing. It has earned its place through the achievements of a glittering roll call of former winners, headed by Arkle, who represent many of the best chasers to have graced the sport. Mill House, Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad, One Man, Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River were others to have embellished their careers with victory in the 3m2f handicap chase. There have been no three time winners, Arkle narrowly failing when beaten by Stalbridge Colonist, to whom he was conceding 35lb, in 1966, and Denman finishing third in 2010. The late Fulke Walwyn enjoyed multiple successes with an unmatched record of seven wins from Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981). Nicky Henderson (2005 Trabolgan, 2012 Bobs Worth & 2013 Triolo D’Alene) and Paul Nicholls (2003 Strong Flow, 2007 & 2009 Denman) are the most successful current trainers with three wins each. Willie Robinson and Tom Scudamore have ridden the most winners of the race, Robinson on Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), and Scudamore on Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018), Cloth Cap (2020). There have been four horses that have captured the Coral Gold Cup and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season - Arkle, Bregawn, Denman and Bobs Worth. Native River won the Coral Gold Cup and Welsh National in 2016 and the following season landed the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Many Clouds remains the only horse to have won both the Coral Gold Cup and the Grand National at Aintree. Last year's renewal saw Dan Skelton take the honours with Le Milos.
