Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first day of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, featuring the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup.
Won by Sacred last year, there is a good chance you will see another future equine star in action this afternoon. My thanks go to title sponsors of the weekend, Dubai Duty Free - who are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year - for their continued support. A further thanks go to our other partners today, the family and friends of the much-missed Henry Ponsonby, Stuart Michael Associates and long standing partner Haynes Hanson & Clark who are sponsoring the 43rd consecutive running of the Haynes Hanson & Clark Stakes.
Dubai Duty Free have enjoyed 27 years of partnership at Newbury Racecourse and during that time they have achieved outstanding success as a business and we are immensely grateful for their ongoing and generous support of racing here. We are delighted to welcome Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin and members of the Dubai Duty Free team back to Newbury for what is always an enjoyable weekend.
The Dubai Duty Free Marquee is well worth a visit with complimentary Arabic coffee and dates on offer, plus the wheel of fortune is back with many prizes up for grabs including free entry into the Finest Surprise and Millennium Millionaire draws.
The flat action doesn’t stop this weekend as we will see the third instalment of Oktoberfest at the BetVictor Flat Finale on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 October – and with traditional Bavarian food, a variety of drink plus lots of Oompah, it’s guaranteed to be a fun weekend once again.
I would also like to highlight that this is a weekend of transition at Newbury as Keith Ottesen – Clerk of the Course since 2018 – will be overseeing his last race meeting, with George Hill taking over from Keith after this weekend. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Keith all the best and welcome George to Newbury.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we see many of you back here again tomorrow for the second day of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend.

How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

REMEMBERING HENRY HENRY PONSONBY
14th June 1948 -15th September 2022
Gone but never forgotten. The Lambourn Valley and racing community beyond, lost a dear friend when HenrysadlydiedlastSeptember.Henrywasthepioneer of racing syndicate ownership in the 1970’s and founder of HP Racing. Ahead of the field in many respects, a unique irrepressible character, whose enthusiasm for racing and belief that life should be lived to the full left its mark on all who knew him. An eternal optimist, he was never short of an amusing story to tell or holding back on giving his opinion! Great credit must be given to his determination and foresight to establish small, exclusive syndicate ownership, which went from strength to strength, enjoying numerous winners over the years, both on the Flat and in the National Hunt sphereandheparticularlyenjoyedhavingrunnersathis local track, Newbury. HP Racing syndicates have tasted successatmostofthetopfestivalssuchasCheltenham, Aintree, York, Goodwood and in recent years an exciting double at Royal Ascot, with Scarlet Dragon and Who Dares Wins, which helped boost the careers of current top jockeys Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand.
Henry would be delighted that his legacy continues with HP Racing and his distinctive racing colours still regularly frequenting the Winner’s Enclosure. The small team of twelve horses keep the flag flying with top trainers Eve Johnson Houghton, Alan King, Nicky Henderson and Tim Easterby The syndicates
Henry, Winner of the Charity Race, Newbury June 2000
are now in the safe hands of HP Racing co-directors Liz Rutter and Fiona Marner. Fiona, owner of Windmill Farm Equine Spa and Rehabilitation Centre, near Lambourn, was a close friend of Henry’s for over five decades and her expertise and knowledge of the bloodstock world is invaluable. Liz, Henry’s second in command for over 26 years, is now aided by former trainer Harry Dunlop, who is assisting with managing the syndicates. Harry is a great asset with his formidable racing background and experience and is already busy attending the yearling sales with leading bloodstock agent, Anthony Bromley, in the search for potential new stars to run under the HP Racing banner.
Eve Johnson Houghton has kindly arranged to parade our two 2 year olds before the first race. Due To Henry, a gelding by Due Diligence that really takes the eye and his syndicate was put together and named in memory of Henry. Gold Minx is a lovely filly by Havana Gold that Henry was determined to buy at last September’s Yearling Sale. Both these youngsters are exciting prospects.
HP Racing is fortunate to have numerous longstanding owners, many of whom are at Newbury today to remember Henry and we thank them for their loyal and continued support. We are also looking forward to meeting new owners and friends to share the thrill of racehorse ownership in our small, friendly groups.
Fiona Marner and Liz Rutter are delighted to have this special day at Newbury to remember dear Henry and HP Racing will continue his enduring passion for horses and racing. Come and join us for some fun in a new exclusive syndicate being put together with likeminded friendly people – contact details below…

Dubai Duty Free’s
Whether it is on the golfing greens, the tennis courts, the racecourse or even the high-seas, sponsorship and the support of international events has been an integral part of Dubai Duty Free’s marketing strategy since 1983. And more than just marketing the company itself, these sporting endeavors have also helped to propel global perception of the emirate.
The 2023 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free, went fantastically well
The 2023 sporting ‘season’ began in January with the Hero Dubai Desert Classic which was won by Northern Irish player Rory McIlroy. As a patron sponsor of the tournament, Dubai Duty Free took part in the Pro-AM competition and entertained a number of guests in style at the Emirates Golf Club
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 31st anniversary of the Championships which took place from 19th February –4th March was won by Barbora Krejcikova and Daniil Medvedev, who both claimed their maiden Dubai titles
Much awareness is also created by the operation’s involvement in horse racing and Dubai Duty Free regularly flies the flag in the UK in April at Newbury Racecourse

Sporting Excellence
The 2nd July saw the 16th running of the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby held at The Curragh Racecourse in Ireland, which offered a rich purse of Euro 1.25 million. The race was won by Auguste Rodin, which is trained by Aidan O’Brien with Ryan Moore as the jockey.
Meanwhile, the world’s premier international jockeys’ challenge, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup took place at Ascot Racecourse in August Four teams representing Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, Rest of the World and The Ladies team competed in a thrilling six-race showdown, which was won by the latter.
Also in September, the distinctive Dubai Duty Free branding is back at Newbury Racecourse for the two-day Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, which marks the season finale of the operation’s horseracing sponsorship in 2023.
The airport retailer returned to Ireland as an official partner of the Horizon Irish Open, which was held at the K Club in September.
Other sports to benefit from Dubai Duty Free’s support include the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup and the Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby 7’s to name a few .
