Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Newbury for BetVictor Hungerford Day, featuring top quality racing, followed by Olly Murs performing live after racing.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for their generous support of today’s card; title sponsor BetVictor, Highclere Castle Gin, Heart Bingo, Chapel Down, Benchmark and the family and friends of the late Brian Rycraft.

Named after the local town, today’s feature race is the Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes. Established in 1949, it was initially run over a mile and a half, before becoming one of the most prestigious seven-furlong races in the Flat calendar.

Once again, this year’s field is looking highly competitive, with 2022’s winner Jumby featuring alongside Chindit – who lines up following an impressive performance in our Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes in May – play nicely this time, Chindit.

Make sure you join course expert David Crosse for the popular ‘Trips to the Start’ which will take place ahead of the 2:25, 3:00 and 4:10 races today. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred trip. Our partner Renegade Brewery have their pop-up bar on-site today if you fancy enjoying their new beers such as Queensbury Jack IPA and Renegade Master as well as favourites like Good Old Boy. If you are joining us in the Premier Enclosure today, please make sure you head to the Heart Bingo flower wall to get your next Insta snap!

The Flat action doesn’t end here, the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend returns on 22 and 23 September Get ready for some family fun, live music and top-class racing across both days. October will then see the third instalment of Oktoberfest at the BetVictor Flat Finale on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 October - with traditional Bavarian food and drink plus lots of Oompah, it’s guaranteed to be a fun day!

Discounted tickets are currently available for both of these race weekends and can be purchased on-site today from the ticket office located adjacent to the Berkshire Stand.

Following the last race today make sure you head over to the main stage in the Grandstand Enclosure to see Olly Murs perform live. Close proximity tickets are still available on-site today for £15 should you want to get even closer to the action.

Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable time and that we see you again on our next raceday on Tuesday 29 August.

Thank You to Today’s Race Sponsors

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Betting

Laying of bets is subject to Racecourse terms and conditions. The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Grandstand ground floor, opposite Donna Italia, today. Customers of the boards and rails bookmakers should check their itemised tickets immediately on receipt, as mistakes cannot be rectified after the ‘off’.

Collecting your winnings: If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement.

NEVER destroy your ticket until after the ‘Weighed in’ announcement has been made. There may still be a Steward’s Enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses may be disqualified.

With Bookmakers: A late pay service is available in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY

With the Tote: Winning tickets not claimed on the course can be redeemed by returning your winning ticket to: Britbet, Customer Services, Aintree Racecourse, Princess Royal Stand, Ormskirk Road, Liverpool L9 5AS
