Good evening and a very warm welcome to the finale of the Summer Evening Series with the Cocktail Club.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank tonight’s valued sponsors, our multi-raceday partner BetVictor, Jebel Ali Racecourse based in Dubai, with whom Newbury has had a long and proud association with for many years, Venture Security who look after all our security on racedays, Rayner Bosch Car Service who provide and maintain all our Estates Team and Service vehicles, and to the family and friends of the late and much missed Bob Barker who was a member here at Newbury.

It’s hopefully going to be a lovely evening so please do head to the Crafty Filly terrace to try a range of cocktails on offer plus enjoy some live music followed by an afterparty until 10pm. Make sure you tag us in your photos for the chance to be featured on our social channels.

Looking ahead, don’t miss our second Party in the Paddock raceday, BetVictor Hungerford Day taking place on Saturday 19 August with Olly Murs performing live after racing. Discounted tickets are still available for this raceday, but only until Friday 28 July.

Following this we see our Dubai Duty Free International Weekend return on 22 and 23 September followed by the third year of Oktoberfest for the BetVictor Flat Season Finale on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 October, two thrilling weekends packed with top quality racing and entertainment. Early bird tickets are available via the website for a limited time only.

Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable time and that we will see you again on our next raceday.

Thank You to Today’s Race Sponsors

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

BOB BARKER IN MEMORY OF

Every Saturday the “3 amigos”: Bob Barker, Steve Manford, Keith Barrett, would meet at their “local” and spend happy afternoons betting on and watching the racing; often joined by a wider group including Mark Woodcock and various spouses. The banter and wind-ups flowed back and forth, interspersed with Bob’s singing. Bob knew the words to a wide and eclectic range of songs, from The Smiths through to Gilbert and Sullivan! And he would take great delight in attempting to sing at any opportunity! He would have a big smile on his face, his shoulders would be moving up and down and he would be banging the table singing his favourite little ditty: “I’ll have a Barcardi, a Coke, a Scotch and lemonade and a Pils and a Pils’.

Bob was a member of Newbury Racecourse, and he would regularly attend with Steve, Simon and Fraser who are also members.

Bob was very popular, jovial, the life and soul of any event. He would help anyone and expect nothing in return, and he was always the first to put his hand in his pocket to buy a drink. His family sponsor this race in memory of “This Charming Man”.
