Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to our first evening fixture of 2023, the KC Soccer Sofas Midsummer Raceday here at Newbury Racecourse.

Our thanks go to our partners of the day – KC Sofas, Donnington Grove Vets, the British European Breeders Fund, BetVictor, with a special mention of the memorial race being held in memory of Maurice Adams. 2023 is KC Sofas’ first as a sponsor at Newbury Racecourse and racegoers will be able to put their feet up on one of their chairs today. The Owners’ Club has bespoke chairs on show and keep your eye out for football themed chairs too with KC Sofas also having the Soccer Sofas brand within their portfolio.

With summer well and truly upon us we are looking forward to our brand-new Summer Evening Series commencing next week with The Gin Garden on Thursday 6 July This new series lands on three Thursdays across July – The Rum Shack follows on Thursday 13 July before The Cocktail Club rounds out the series on Thursday 27 July Each promises an evening of exciting racing, themed food and drink, live music and an afterparty hosted by our resident DJ.

The Betfair Racing Staff Week Stable Staff race, supported by Racing Welfare in takes place at 4.40pm today where you will see 12 riders who have been training hard and raising money compete. You may spot that the charity riders will be wearing Racing With Pride armbands in honour of Pride Month. One of the jockeys will also be sporting the Racing With Pride silks to show support for the LGBT+ community and carry the message that Racing is Everyone’s Sport. This initiative is part of the wider Racing Staff Week, which brings the racing industry and its followers together to showcase the passion, skill and dedication of all the staff, across the breadth of the industry and whose hard work makes our great sport possible. It is a fantastic initiative from Racing Welfare to show their thanks to those doing an amazing job in this industry, including our very own Newbury Racecourse team. Newbury will be showing our own support by granting free entry to all stable staff with a valid ID or letter from their employer on Thursday 6 July. We hope they will enjoy their time with us next week with live entertainment and an after party to conclude the evening.

It’s also not long until Sir Tom Jones and Olly Murs arrive at the Racecourse as part of Weatherbys Super Sprint Day (Sat 22 July) and BetVictor Hungerford Day (Sat 19 August). Racegoers have already saved over £150,000 on tickets to this summer’s music racedays courtesy of our ticketing discounts, with the lowest-priced Early Bird tickets for Olly Murs only available until this Friday.

As ever, there’s free WI-FI available for use today in all public areas and if you have any questions or queries during your time with us please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our team.

Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we will see you again next week for the Summer Evening Series Raceday with The Gin Garden on Thursday 6 July.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Race Summary: LUCKY’S DREAM confirmed he retains ability on the back of a lengthy absence when finishing a close-up third at Salisbury recently, that despite not being seen to best effect off a steady gallop. Potentially very well handicapped, he could be worth chancing to build on that here. Charlie Arthur, third in this race 12 months ago, should be sharper for his Southwell reappearance and is feared, with Trojan Truth and Mrembo also worth a look.

Race Summary: DELICACY was unfancied in the betting but showed plenty to work on when fifth in a Kempton maiden and can put that experience to good use. Bint Havana Grey looks an interesting newcomer with the champion jockey booked, so may emerge as the biggest threat ahead of the penalised Crooked Crown, who won a weak maiden at Chepstow.

When Maurice died in June 2019, just a few weeks short of his 87th birthday, the family wanted to do something that would mark his birthday in the years to come. He was a loving, family man but what could we do to mark his birthday? Something special to him and something that the family of all ages, including his 5 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren (and counting), could enjoy in the years to come?

It wasn’t a difficult decision to sponsor a race at Newbury in his memory. What better way to bring family and friends together to remember him in an environment where he would have been in his element. Newbury did us proud last year (after the first year was cancelled due to Covid) and the family enjoyed our first memorial race evening so much that we are delighted to be able repeat it again this year. The whole family came together and we could not have spent a happier evening remembering Maurice, Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad. Even though he’s been gone 4 years we still miss him and think about him every day.

He was always mad on his racing. It didn’t matter to him if it was a regular weekend race meeting around the Midland tracks, a quiet evening meeting at Bath or top flight racing at the likes of Ascot, Sandown, Kempton or, of course, Newbury.

He was fortunate to have seen the top races and many of the greats of the sport, both human and equine. Lester Piggott, John Francome, Frankie Dettori, Desert Orchid, Red Rum, Sea Pigeon and so many more.

When he wasn’t at the races he was often found watching the racing on TV or attending stable visits to see his various syndicate horses. It didn’t matter if he owned a 1/12th share or merely an eyelash, he followed them with enthusiasm right until the day he died. We have no doubt that he is “looking down” on us again today, loving that the family is able to share his favourite past time. We can be sure that he’ll still be trying to find that elusive winner!
