LOCKINGE DAY
OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00
SATURDAY 18 MAY 2024
I would like to welcome you to the Al Shaqab-sponsored Lockinge Day at Newbury racecourse, our ninth year of sponsorship.
Horseracing is considered one of the key elements of Qatar’s heritage and it has expanded both nationally and internationally in recent years. This is demonstrated by hosting the now internationally recognised Qatar Derby Festival in December and Amir Sword Festival in February in Doha each year. We also have our flagship sponsorships of major race meetings in Europe including the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Qatar Goodwood Festival and the Al Shaqab Lockinge Day.
Al Shaqab has grown significantly in the past ten years, and has already enjoyed tremendous successes, thanks to dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Treve as well as our first English Classic winner Galileo Gold, winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, and Brametot, dual Classic winner in France of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and the Prix du Jockey Club.
The prestige and reputation of British horseracing is unrivalled and its importance on the world stage is second to none. This is why I am very proud and honoured to be part of it.
I wish you all a very enjoyable day.
HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani
Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to our Group 1 flagship raceday, the Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day.
Today’s racing looks as competitive as ever with a bumper £890,000 of prize money on offer across the day’s seven races. The much-loved Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes takes centre stage with legends such as Frankel, Baaeed and Palace Pier all featuring on the race’s esteemed roll of honour. Our thanks go to long standing partner Al Shaqab for their generous sponsorship of today’s card along with new partner Trade Nation who are sponsoring the London Gold Cup.
My extended thanks also go to sponsors Sky Sports Racing, Hong Kong Jockey Club, World Pool and OCS for their support across today’s card.
Five of today’s races feature in the World Pool and to mark World Pool’s increased presence at Newbury – and its origins – we’re celebrating the very best of Hong Kong, from music to culinary delights, throughout today’s racing. This celebration will centre around a new Hong Kong Garden – located in the Grandstand Enclosure – which will play host to live performances from reality TV star Albert Chau – starting at 1pmas well as a range of other entertainment.
As ever, there’s lots to look forward to including, live music, a punters’ panel, trips to the start, on the spot style prizes as well as the return of the Sequoia Hair and Beauty Marquee where racegoers can enjoy complimentary hair and beauty treatments courtesy of Sequoia Hair To round off the day the dynamic duo of Lovely Laura and Ben Santiago have jetted in from Ibiza to bring summer vibes to our afterparty –live after the last race at approximately 5:25pm.
Finally, I would like to thank all our racegoers for joining us today. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we will see you again on Thursday 13th June for our Summer Raceday.

How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Mental Health Awareness Week
13 - 19 May 2024
MOVEMENT
Racing staff and racecourse staff are wearing green ribbons today to show their commitment to raising awareness and ending the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Movement: Moving more for our mental health. Movement is important for our mental health. But so many of us struggle to move enough. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood or around your workplace, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!
Racing Welfare is committed to providing accessible, tailored mental health and wellbeing support services to all of racing’s workforce.
We offer confidential support through Racing’s Support Line 0800 6300 443 www.racingwelfare.co.uk

Race Summary: Given the just shy of 10f trip is almost certainly on the sharp side for DESERT HERO, his head-second on reappearance at Sandown has to go down as a fine effort and, upped in distance, he’s the one to beat in this company. Salt Bay’s third-placed finish in the John Porter over C&D a month ago puts him right in the mix, while low-mileage 4-y-o Middle Earth looks the type to raise his game again this term.

SPIRIT OF ACKLAM’s yard plundered a big-field 3-y-o handicap at York earlier in the week and this progressive dual novice winner might be able to take the prize back to Yorkshire. Goodwood Odyssey, Chantilly, who represents last year’s winning connections, and King’s Gambit, whose yard has a strong record in this, head the many possible dangers. 1-2-3:

FIVE FAMOUS WINNERS OF THE AL SHAQAB
LOCKINGE STAKES
PALL MALL (1958)
The winner of the first running of the Lockinge Stakes cemented an enduring association between his owner Queen Elizabeth II and Newbury Racecourse, which she continued to visit annually. Pall Mall won the race just weeks after springing an upset to land the 2,000 Guineas. He became the first of only three dual winners when gaining a second Lockinge victory in 1959.
FRANKEL (2012)
BRIGADIER GERARD (1972)
One of the greatest racehorses ever to compete in Britain graced Newbury in 1972 when he began his four-year-old campaign with a comfortable defeat of Grey Mirage in the Lockinge. He remained unbeaten until August that year when he suffered the one and only defeat of a brilliant 18 race career at the hands of Roberto in the International Stakes at York.
The world’s highest rated racehorse paid his second visit to Newbury, where he had won the Greenham Stakes the previous year, and triumphed in the fashion to which the public had become accustomed, winning by a five length margin. This was achieved despite being the subject of an injury scare a few weeks earlier which had threatened to put his career in the balance. It was the first of five Group 1 successes in 2012 which ended at Ascot in the Champion Stakes before he was retired to stud with a perfect record of 14 victories.
BAAEED (2022)
Winner of the 2022 renewal of the Lockinge Stakes, Baaeed arrived at Newbury as the one to beat and won with ease, going clear by over three lengths. He had a number of wins coming into the Lockinge - including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes - and following his triumph at Newbury he secured more such as the Juddmonte International Stakes at York. He only suffered one defeat in eleven runs.
MODERN GAMES (2023)
Arriving here off the back of some excellent success in the US, scoring in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland in November before picking up an impressive second in the Grade 1 Mile Stakes at the same course the following April, Modern Games was certainly the one to watch Ridden here by William Buick he raced well, keeping on well to secure the win and clutch the fifth Group 1 success of his career. This would prove to be the last however as he would only race once more when fourth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot the following month before retiring to stud.

Race Summary: William Haggas’ new recruit WILTSHIRE put himself in line for some of the top sprint handicaps when scoring over C&D last month (value for much more than the head winning margin), and with further improvement on the cards, he’s fancied to notch his fourth career success at the expense of Ferrous, who looks an upwardly-mobile sprinter and arrives on a hat-trick. Race Summary: It was ultimately residual greenness that got the better of GODWINSON when second to Metal Merchant in the C&D Spring Cup and, likely to be both sharper and a little more street-wise this time, he is taken to reverse those placings. Metal Merchant should be in the mix once more and, provided he is raring to go following a break, Sonny Liston will also be a threat.
