Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend and the Craft Beer Festival.
The highlights of today’s excellent card are the Group 3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings, and the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes for three-year-old fillies. The former has been won by some exceptional racehorses over the years including Frankel, Olympic Glory and Kingman; the latter is one of the premier fillies’ trials and a top race in its own right, won last year by Wild Beauty. With the array of equine talent on display today, it would be no surprise if we see more superstars of the future grab the limelight at Newbury this afternoon.
2023 marks the 27th year of sponsorship from our long-standing partner, Dubai Duty Free. During that time, Dubai Duty Free has enjoyed considerable success as a business and we are hugely grateful for their ongoing and generous support of racing here. We are delighted to welcome Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin and members of the Dubai Duty Free team back to Newbury for an enjoyable weekend with us. Additionally, grateful thanks go to our other sponsors: Watership Down Stud, Betgoodwin and Darley
We are thrilled to also welcome the Craft Beer Festival back after three years, featuring over 30 real ale and ciders from local brewers. Visit the beer tent and get the taste buds flowing with a large variety on offer as well as live acoustic music throughout the afternoon. Our partner Renegade Brewery has their pop up bar situated near the entrance of the Crafty Filly if you want to enjoy the new beers they have launched this year such as Queensbury Jack IPA and Renegade Master as well as old favourites like Good Old Boy. The Dubai Duty Free Marquee is well worth a visit with complimentary Arabic coffee and dates on offer, plus the wheel of fortune is back with many prizes up for grabs including entry into the Finest Surprise and Millennium Millionaire draws!
Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Ouzbeck our retired racehorse, who is with us today in partnership with local charity Greatwood. You can meet Ouzbeck in his stable located next to the Eastern Entrance within the Grandstand Enclosure. Ouzbeck will be making regular appearances here across the course of the year.
After racing The Shadow Monkeys take to the stage next to the beer tent for some good old fashion sing-a-longs and a country-style after party
Today also marks the 30th anniversary of Stephen Lawrence’s death. Please join British Horseracing in supporting the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation inspiring a fairer society for young people across the country. To find out more as to how you can donate to the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation please visit stephenlawrenceday.org. Alternatively, a bucket collection will be available on exit through the East Gate and I know they would be hugely grateful for any donations.
Finally, we are delighted to be reopening the brand new Hennessy Restaurant this weekend, which has undergone a major refurbishment. We hope those that dine with us in The Hennessy this weekend enjoy their experience in this stunning facility.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and we see you again for the Starlight Charity Raceday on Friday 19 May.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Race Summary: The unexposed SATURN FIVE showed plenty in 3 starts for Joseph O’Brien in Ireland last season and he is of strong interest here given the likelihood of improvement now pitched into a handicap for new connections. Though below par at Doncaster recently, First Officer will be a danger to all if able to reproduce something akin to his peak 2022 form. He is second choice ahead of Mustazeed, while Chantico could also have a part to play if the fitting of a hood helps him settle.
