Good Afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first day of the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend and another Flat Season here at Newbury!
This afternoon sees the seventh running of our longest flat race, now with the value of £40,000, The Compton Beauchamp Estates Ltd Silver Bar Handicap, which takes place over two miles and two furlongs. My thanks extend to our sponsors, Dreweatts, Darley, Compton Beauchamp Estates and the family of Bridget Fetherston– Godley, and of course Dubai Duty Free who take title sponsorship across this weekend.
2023 marks the 27th year of sponsorship from our long-standing partner, Dubai Duty Free. During that time, Dubai Duty Free has enjoyed considerable success as a business and we are hugely grateful for their ongoing and generous support of racing here. We are delighted to welcome Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Colm McLoughlin and members of the Dubai Duty Free team back to Newbury for an enjoyable weekend with us.
We are thrilled to also welcome the Craft Beer Festival back after three years, featuring over 30 real ale and ciders from local brewers. Visit the beer tent and get the taste buds flowing with a large variety on offer as well as live acoustic music throughout the afternoon. Our partner Renegade Brewery has their pop up bar situated near the entrance of the Crafty Filly if you want to enjoy the new beers they have launched this year such as Queensbury Jack IPA and Renegade Master as well as old favourites like Good Old Boy.
The Dubai Duty Free Marquee is well worth a visit with complimentary Arabic coffee and dates on offer, plus the wheel of fortune is back with many prizes up for grabs including entry into the Finest Surprise and Millennium Millionaire draws!
We conclude today with the Showpiece Design HEROS Charity race in support of HEROS which will take place at 5.55pm. Please do come and cheer on these riders who have been training incredibly hard over the last few months, whilst raising valuable funds for the charity – we wish them all the very best.
Finally, we are delighted to be reopening the brand new Hennessy Restaurant this weekend, which has undergone a major refurbishment. We hope those that dine with us in The Hennessy this weekend enjoy their experience in this stunning facility.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we see many of you back here again tomorrow for the second day of the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Race Summary: A cracking maiden. The Gosden stable has won this 4 times since 2017 so the suggestion is SHIVA SHAKTI who made a very promising start to her career when second at Yarmouth last autumn and is the mount of Frankie Dettori from the stable’s 3 runners. Value Added, a very promising second on her course debut last year, Shining Jewel and the selection’s stablemate Eastern Empress are others who look to have bright futures, while Queen Emma and Maman Joon are newcomers to moinitor in the betting.

Prince Alex (GB)
Race Summary: NOVEL LEGEND picked up where he left off last term by landing a 2m Kempton handicap on his reappearance and, though now 4lb higher in a stronger race, he looks the way to go with further progress likely at this trip. There will be a question mark surrounding Vino Victrix should the word ‘soft’ appear in the going description, as seems likely, but such conditions will be of no concern to the likes of Mostly Sunny, Secret Shadow and Star Caliber, and they are feared most in that order.

The Bridget Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, run over seven furlongs at Newbury Racecourse since 1987, is sponsored in perpetuity by her family in memory of Bridget Fetherston-Godley
Bridget was a passionate racegoer as well as being a successful owner and breeder, with an encyclopaedic recall of thoroughbred blood lines, and she would be thrilled so many winners of her race have proven to be of high calibre.
She spread her knowledge and enthusiasm for flat racing to her family, in particular to her husband and to her son, who was a successful racehorse trainer for many years.
