Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the second day of the BetVictor March Racing Weekend here at Newbury.

We have another exciting afternoon of Jump racing ahead which includes the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase and our thanks go to our title sponsor, BetVictor for generously retaining the ‘Greatwood’ title. We also extend our thanks to Irish Thoroughbred Marketing for their continued support.

For those interested in getting even closer to the action, make sure you join course expert David Crosse for the popular Trips to the Jump which will take place ahead of the 1.40, 2.45 and 4.35 races today. We ask that any racegoers keen to make the trip out to the course meet to the left-hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before their preferred trip.

March’s arrival means we’re now only three weeks away from the culmination of the jumps season here at Newbury, and we’re looking forward to welcoming BetVictor back across Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March for the jumps season finale. This final jumps fixture will provide us with an opportunity to present our end of season awards - The Newburys – in partnership with Conundrum Consulting, as we look back at all of the fantastic jumping highlights we’ve enjoyed this season.

Following the BetVictor Jumps Finale our attention will turn to the start of the Flat season on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April when Classic hopefuls will be in action at the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture will also see the return of the popular Beer Festival featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. Tickets are available to purchase online with bookings now also being taken for the newly refurbished Hennessy Restaurant which will be back in action for this weekend, so make sure you are one of the first to experience it.

If you’d like to take a look at what’s in store for The Hennessy Restaurant’s refurbishment, simply head to the ground floor of the Hampshire Stand or Berkshire Stand where our display boards give a flavour of what you can expect. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing patience while this exciting refurbishment is completed.

Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable afternoon and that we will see you again on Friday 24 March for the first day of the BetVictor Jumps Season Finale.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Race Summary: Plenty of familiar faces in opposition with a chance taken on 2019 Ladbrokes Trophy hero DE RASHER COUNTER. His latest pair of efforts are best overlooked, and his previous exploits this campaign read well in the context of this race, so it would come as no surprise to see him go close. Mister Malarky, who filled the runner-up spot for the third time in his last 4 starts at Exeter recently, and Musselburgh-scorer Cyclop head the dangers.

Race Summary: A handicap restricted to those advancing in years, so DARGIANNINI makes plenty of appeal given that he’s a relatively low-mileage 8-y-o who proved better than ever on just his second start for Harry Derham when scoring in tidy fashion at Uttoxeter in January That race was run in a good time and an 8lb rise looks manageable. Lock’s Corner and Whatsupwithyou head the opposition.
