Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first day of the BetVictor March Racing Weekend here at Newbury.
My thanks must go to today’s sponsors for their continued support and generous contribution to this afternoon’s seven race programme. This weekend marks the start of another exciting year with BetVictor who, in total, will sponsor 47 races across 14 of our racedays in 2023. BetVictor are joined by A-Plan Insurance, Focus, West Berkshire Mencap and Byerley Stud today.
March’s arrival means we’re now only three weeks away from the culmination of the jumps season here at Newbury, and we’re looking forward to welcoming BetVictor back across Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March for the jumps season finale. This final jumps fixture will provide us with an opportunity to present our end of season awards - The Newburys – in partnership with Conundrum Consulting, as we look back at all of the fantastic jumping highlights we’ve enjoyed this season.
Following the BetVictor Jumps Finale our attention will turn to the start of the Flat season on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April when Classic hopefuls will be in action at the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This fixture will also see the return of the popular Beer Festival featuring over 30 real ales and ciders from local brewers. Tickets are available to purchase online with bookings now also being taken for the newly refurbished Hennessy Restaurant which will be back in action for this weekend, so make sure you are one of the first to experience it.
If you’d like to take a look at what’s in store for The Hennessy Restaurant’s refurbishment, simply head to the ground floor of the Hampshire Stand where our display boards give a flavour of what you can expect. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing patience while this exciting refurbishment is completed.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable afternoon and that we will see you again tomorrow for the second day of the BetVictor March Racing Weekend.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

That said, it would be no surprise were Nothin To Ask and Brief Times to both get back on track following rather disappointing last-time-out efforts, with Fergal O’Brien’s charge feared most.
