super saturday saturday 11 february O F F I C I A L RA CE CA RD £4 .0 0 E X H I L A R A T I N G WI NT ER RA CI N G COMPLIMENTARY - NOT FOR RESALE
Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Betfair Super Saturday, one of the highlights of Newbury’s Jump Season.
My thanks once again extend to Betfair who have sponsored this prestigious card for 11 years and have helped make it one of jump racing’s most exciting days. The Betfair Hurdle worth £155,000 continues to be the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and is supported by a highly competitive card; including two Grade 2 chases in the Betfair Denman Chase and Betfair Exchange Game Spirit Chase, both of which have been won by jumping legends, one of which, Native River will be on hand for racegoers to see this afternoon.
During the week we announced a record £6M in prizemoney will be available to connections who run their horses at Newbury this year. This represents a 16% increase year on year and a 26% increase up to £3.1M, in the contribution the racecourse makes towards that prizemoney This is a very significant commitment for an independent racecourse of our size and demonstrates our confidence in the racecourse and our commitment to support racing, during a challenging period when it needs it most.
Finally, I would like to thank you for your patience regarding the refurbishment of The Hennessy Restaurant on the second floor of the Hampshire Stand, which will be out of action until the Spring. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause for our regular Hennessy customers, and if you would like to see what the planned changes will look like, you can find display boards of plans on the ground floor of both the Berkshire Stand and Hampshire Stand. We are very excited about the refurbishment and cannot wait to showcase this to you all.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable afternoon and that we will see you again for Bloomfields Horseboxes Afternoon Racing on Sunday 19 February.

How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

DERBY HOPPERS CELEBRITY RACE
The History Of The Betfair Denman Chase
The Betfair Denman Chase is one of Newbury’s newest races and immediately became one of the most significant conditions chases of the jumps season when it was established in 2000.
The race was originally named the Aon Chase and, run over a distance of an extended 2m7f, and has become a regular destination for leading staying chasers, many of which go on to contest the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
See More Business set the pattern when he captured the inaugural running the year after he landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was the first of ten winners trained by Paul Nicholls whose other winners included champions Kauto Star in 2007, Denman in 2008 and 2021 winner Secret Investor.
Kauto Star and Denman both went on from Newbury to triumph in the following month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, a feat matched since by Coneygree in 2015 and Native River in 2018.
The popular Denman’s connection with Newbury, where he also became one of only three horses to win two editions of the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Coral Gold Cup, in 2007 and 2009, was formally recognised when the race was renamed the Denman Chase at the time Betfair took over sponsorship in 2012.
Native River is the only horse to win the Denman Chase three times after his success in 2020, while his 2018 victory established Richard Johnson as the most successful jockey in the race with four wins to his name.

NATIVE RIVER
NATIVE RIVER WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GREATEST STEEPLECHASERS EVER TO RUN AT NEWBURY
He was trained by Colin Tizzard for Brocade Racing’s Garth and Anne Broom, amassing earnings of £1.1 million during a 32 race career in which he won 14 times, seven under champion jump jockey Richard Johnson. He was a regular at Newbury where he ran six times and was unbeaten in five chases. He is the most successful horse in the history of the Betfair Denman Chase, capturing the prize in 2017, 2018 and 2020. He also won the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in 2016 and from there went on to capture the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow.
Garth Broom said: “Native River was unbeaten in five runs at Newbury. The season in which he won the Ladbrokes Trophy, the Welsh National and the Betfair Denman Chase and then finished a very close third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup would be a hard to top as a season. Of course he then went and trumped that by winning the Gold Cup the following year
“He performed for us every season in top class races. He always raced with his heart on his sleeve. People took to him because he didn’t know how to run a bad race. He gave us so many good memories.”
A BIG THANKS GO TO ANNE AND GARTH BROOM, TOM MALONE, EMMA VINE AND JAZ HOSGOOD FOR BRINGING HIM TO NEWBURY TODAY.

Race Summary: The race revolves around GREANETEEN, who is established as at least a notch above these and he didn’t do a great deal wrong despite failing to retain his Tingle Creek crown when last seen. The battle for second may be more interesting and with doubts over last year’s winner Funambule Sivola at present, handicap graduate Malystic could be the answer to that puzzle.

The History Of The Betfair Hurdle
The Betfair Hurdle is the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and has a long history as one of the most competitive races in the jumps calendar.
When it was first run in 1963, the 2m handicap hurdle took place at Aintree and was known as the Schweppes Gold Trophy, but soon found a permanent home at Newbury.
It became an annual target for Ryan Price who captured four of the first five runnings, twice with Rosyth, each winner ridden to victory by Josh Gifford.
In 1968 Persian War set a weight-carrying record when he shouldered 11st 13lb to victory and the following month became the first of only two horses to win the showpiece hurdle and the Champion Hurdle.
It was another 27 years before Make A Stand, trained by Martin Pipe, matched Persian War’s achievement by which time the Tote had taken over the sponsorship.
Nicky Henderson holds the record for the most wins in the race, recording five successes, while Gifford, who also won the race as a trainer when Deep Sensation triumphed in 1990, retains the record for most wins as a jockey.

TIMEFORM VIEW Off the mark in Irish points at the third attempt and displayed plenty of ability on first 2 starts in bumpers. Showed plenty to work on with a hood fitted when runner-up on Taunton hurdling debut (19f, soft) but was well held upped in grade at Cheltenham 2 weeks ago. TFRHHHII

Race Summary: ARQOOB, a useful performer on the Flat, did well to finish runner-up on his recent Huntingdon hurdling debut considering he jumped tentatively throughout, so he’s fancied to show the benefit of that initial experience and go one better here. Russian Ruler had excuses at Chepstow and is likely to benefit from the drop back in trip, with hat-trick seeker Holetown Hero also respected for all he has more on his plate now.
