OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 SATURDAY 31 DECEMBER challow
COMPLIMENTARY - NOT FOR RESALE
hurdle day

A very warm welcome to all our racegoers joining us today for Newbury’s only Grade 1 race of the season, The Coral Challow Hurdle as we bid a fond farewell to 2022.

To get everyone into the party mood, hopefully the early arrivals among you have been welcomed by mince pies and mulled wine and every racegoer here today has been handed a complimentary ride voucher for The Great Christmas Carnival.

We would really encourage all our racegoers to go and explore this unique event which is exclusive to our racegoers until 4pm this afternoon as part of your raceday ticket and you can cross the course through the Grandstand enclosure to access the site all day from 11.00am. The Great Christmas Carnival runs until 2nd January and will be open until 8pm after racing this evening. There is plenty to get involved with this afternoon especially for the little ones with special appearances from Spiderman and Harry the Horse who will be positioned in the Paddock Bar for the afternoon along with face painting and crafts. Don’t miss out on the spin the wheel which is back giving everyone the opportunity to win a variety of prizes including attractions for The Great Christmas Carnival, raceday tickets and sweets! Our popular Trip to the Jump will take place ahead of the 1.15, 2.25 and 3.35 with the meeting location outside the Weighing Room steppings in the Grandstand Enclosure with course expert David Crosse.

The racing looks as competitive as ever with the Coral Challow Hurdle taking centre stage this afternoon and our thanks go to Coral for their generous sponsorship of today’s meeting. The race boasts an illustrious roll of honour with some great winners over the past 30 years including Denman, Wichita Lineman, Champ, Thyme Hill as well as this year’s impressive Ladbrokes King George winner, Bravemansgame.

A big thank you to all our owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff and racegoers for your ongoing support of Newbury Racecourse in 2022 and wishing you all an enjoyable time today and a Happy New Year

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

Horse Welfare

The welfare of horse and jockey is our top priority. We do everything we can to minimise the chances of horses incurring an injury.

A team of veterinary surgeons is present at every meeting ensuring the safety of the horse. It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. These provide privacy and a calm environment for the vets and connections while the horse is attended to.

THANK YOU AND FAREWELL TO DR BRUCE LETHAM

With huge thanks we bid farewell to Dr Bruce Letham who retires today after more than 39 years ’ service as a Racecourse Medical Officer and Senior RMO. Dr Bruce is among the many professionals whose dedication and expertise helps keep racing safe and running smoothly. We hope you will join us and his medical team colleagues on course today – Doctors Mark Gorvin and Henry Knott, nurse Rikki Davies and the paramedic team from Medicare –in wishing Dr Bruce a long and happy retirement which will be spent devoting time to his family, continuing to improve on his already high standard as a tennis player and keen skier, and following his beloved West Bromwich Albion.

From all of us at Newbury Racecourse, thank you Bruce!
