To mark the start of the 2022/2023 Jumps season, we kick off with the British Horse Society Charity Race at 12.10. Best of luck to all the riders in today’s race, raising money for such a good cause. This afternoon’s charity race will be called by Dani Jackson who has commentated on all our charity races this year as part of our female commentary initiative, launched earlier this year and which has been nominated as a finalist for the Diversity & Inclusion category of the RCA Awards.

For those of you interested, make sure you join course expert Conor Shoemark for the return of our popular Trips to the Jump which will take place for the 1.55 and 3.42 and we ask that racegoers meet to the left hand side of the Weighing Room 20 minutes before.

We would like racegoers aware, there will be a bucket collection for the Royal British Legion on exit at all the main entrances and ask you give generously to this very worthwhile cause.

With Christmas just around the corner, hopefully many of you will be aware of the recent launch of The Great Christmas Carnival at Newbury Racecourse which will officially open to the public on Sunday 27 November and run until Monday 2 January. This large-scale winter extravaganza will take place in the centre of the racecourse and will feature a wide-range of family festive entertainment, including rides, rollercoasters, an ice rink, circus shows and the show-stopping flying Father Christmas. A range of tickets and packages are available to purchase by visiting greatchristmascarnivalnewbury.com and if you are planning on joining us for the Coral Gold Cup Meeting on 25/26 November, your racing ticket will also grant you exclusive entry to the Carnival site. Now is the perfect time to book your tickets for the two-day festive meeting on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November, with a last few dining packages remaining.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our racegoers for joining us today. We are extremely grateful for all the support you provide us and we look forward to welcoming you back here again for The Coral Gold Cup Meeting. Wishing you an enjoyable and profitable afternoon.

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to a new Jumps season here at Newbury Racecourse with the BetVictor Jumps Season Opener.

DAISY CHRISTIE

Daisy just loves her job! She works in racing and despite a shoulder injury is keen to take part and race at Newbury Daisy is raising funds for the BHS Second Chance campaign.

EMMA READ

Emma is very busy, as well as working in the BHS Education team she owns an equestrian competition centre and livery yard As Emma has retrained ex-racehorses in the past, she is keen to actually ride one in a race! Emma believes horses have kept her going through the difficulties in life, so now she is a coach helping others reach their goals and is raising funds for Changing Lives through Horses.

JADE DUNCAN LIAM O’HARA

Jade has worked in racing for many years but has never raced! Jade says ‘I’ve led up at The Grand National, I’ve exercised horses on tracks at Sydney, I’ve watched horses that I’ve broken in, taught to jump go on to race and achieve their goals. The one goal left for me is to race! It’s now or never’

Liam works for the RAF and also trains for the RAF Odiham Saddle Club whilst also running the club Liam has only ridden for 8 years and has little experience on thoroughbreds, but would love to eventually compete for the RAF in military races.

Philip is a BHS Access Officer for the South West and is raising funds for the BHS Access work. Philip is now 62 and his last race was probably before most of his fellow jockeys were born! He very much has the will to win!

Philip would like to thank Tony Newcombe Lisa Smale and Jess Bayliss for training and making Liimari available for this race

Kate is a 54 year old retired Naval Officer, having served for 22 years both at sea and ashore, and now runs a livery and training yard from her home near Emsworth. This is her second BHS Charity Race, so she is no stranger to the challenges to come!

PHILIP HACKETT KATE WELCH ISABELLA PIROLI

Isabella has an eventing background but her grandad has always been a racing enthusiast encouraging her to become a jockey Now he and the rest of her family will be able to watch Izzy race for the first time! Isabella is raising funds for Changing Lives through Horses. Isabella has been working in racing for the past four years now and her grandad sadly won’t be coming to watch.

How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners first place only; between five and seven runners first and second place; eight runners and over first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Race Summary: PONCHO showed enough at Market Rasen 168 days ago to think he can win a race like this, so he takes narrow preference over Iolaos du Mou, who looks the pick of the newcomers ahead of Villainess. Harvie Wallbanger also deserves some respect.
