INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND SATURDAY17 SEPTEMBER QUEEN ELIZABETH II HER MAJESTY 19262022 OFFICIAL RACECARD £4.00 COMPLIMENTARY NOT FOR RESALE

“When you met her, she had a remarkable ability to put you completely at ease and she asked you relevant questions. Her passion for horses was very evident when she was at Newbury and we were delighted when she had a winner in 2017, she could not contain her excitement at that.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II graced Newbury Racecourse with her presence on many occasions and enjoyed 75 winners on the Flat between 1958 and 2022, including when her homebred Call To Mind, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Ryan Moore won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes on 22 April, 2017.

Recalling many meetings with Her Majesty, Colm McLoughlin Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Dubai Duty Free said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was an exceptional monarch and over seven decades put her duties above everything else.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Royal Family and to the nation.”

QUEEN ELIZABETH II OF HER MAJESTY FOND MEMORIES

“Myself and my wife Breeda were honoured to have met Her Majesty on a number of occasions, here at Newbury for the Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend and we were also guests at a dinner at Windsor Castle to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Ascot Racecourse in 2011, while the following year I had the opportunity, along with my colleagues Salah Tahlak and Sinead El Sibai, to present her with a bronze sculpture of the Darley Arabian on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee.

Dominic Burke Chairman of NewburyRacecourse

Today, we mourn the passing of amuchlovedand respected Monarch.Throughout her life, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II wasa loyalfigurehead for British Horseracing and we arehonoured to have so many memories of her hereatthe racecourse. Ican express the deep gratitude of myself and all at Newburyfor her unwavering support for,and appreciation of, British racing overmanydecades.

It wasDoutelle winning the John Porter Stakes on April 17, 1958 whoprovided Her Majesty with her very first winner at the racecourse. Thesame year she wonthe inaugural running of the Group 1Lockinge Stakes with Pall Mall. He wonconsecutive editions of the race and wasarguably the best colt to ever carry TheQueen’scolours, going on to become avery successful stallion.

Aregular visitor here, both as aPrincess alongside the Queen Mother and as Queen, she enjoyeda total of 77 winners at Newbury in the Royalcolours, 75 of those on the Flat. She would visit the racecourse in aprivate capacity in the Spring, the visits unchanged in her diary for decades and would often choose to spend her time looking at the horses in the parade ring, her love of the sport and the horse so evident to all.

On 17 April 1970, Charlton, named in honour of the 1966 England World Cup winning brothers, Bobbyand Jack Charlton, didn’tlet the side down when starting his three-year old season at Newbury by landing the Spring Maiden by fourlengths in the Royalcolours. He developed into asmart performer, winning on four more occasions including the Henry II Stakes at Sandown.

It wasthe dayafter Her Majesty’s91st birthdayin2017 when Call To Mind stormed to victory on his debut and provided Her Majesty with an extrareason to celebrate. She was so clearly delighted with the success of acolt whowent on to become asmart stayer, winning the March Stakes at Goodwood.

Our heartfelt condolences go to His Majesty King Charles III and the TheRoyal Family at this difficult time. God save TheKing.

His wins at two included the Gimcrack Stakes by ten lengths and Dewhurst Stakes by four. At Newbury he won the Greenham Stakes by four lengths to start favourite for the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and, after finishing second behind another great Brigadier Gerard, he was never defeated again.

Mill Reef had recently been retired when the race was named after him. Then afour-year-old, he had been put on apath towards the 1972 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but he never made it to Longchamp asecond time after sufferinga career-ending injury on the gallops in Kingsclere, near Newbury, where he was trained by Ian Balding.

Indeed, at theend of ayear which included asix-length triumph in the King George and three length Arc victory, Mill Reef secured ‘Horse of the Year’ honours over Brigadier Gerard.

The race which honours one of the greats of the turf, the legendary Mill Reef, has aspecial running today when the Group 2Mill Reef Stakes celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The 6f contest, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, hasbeena constant feature at Newbury since Mon Fils, trained by Richard Hannon snr, captured its inaugural running, going on to win the 2,000 Guineas the following year.

Ian Balding with the great Mill Reef at Park House Stables in Kingsclere.

MILL REEF –THE IMMORTAL CHAMPION

Yet by then his legacywas alreadysealed. Awinner at the highest level over three seasons, his three-year-old campaign featuredtriumphs in the 1971 Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Arc, asequence that has not been matched since.

Kept in training at four when amooted rematch on the track with his great rival never materialised, Mill Reef won the Prix Ganay and Coronation Cup, which proved to be his final start.

Balding andMelloncombined to win the MillReef Stakesin1982whenthe brilliant Forest Flower, Europe’s top two-year-old filly that season, captured the prize. Balding was to win the race asecond time with Firebreak 2001.

Mill Reef (left), ridden by Geoff Lewis, wins the Derby at Epsom in 1971 comfortably by two lengths.

Mon Fils was one of four winners of the race for Hannon snr, the most by any trainer and arecord he shares with Peter Walwyn. Pat Eddery is the most successful jockey, capturing the prize on five occasions.

Ian Baldingpictured alongside Breeda McLoughlin,Emma Balding and Dubai Duty Free Vice Chairman, Colm McLoughlin for the Mill Reef Stakes.

The racehas spawnednumeroussubsequentGroup 1winners including, during this century, Zafeen, Excellent Art, Dark Angel, Ribchester, who won the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes the following year, and Harry Angel.

Twelve months after landing the inaugural Lockinge Stakes, Pall Mall repeats that victory as he hardly turns ahair to see off three year-old Rexequus, runner-up in the following month’s Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal Meeting.Arguably the best colt to ever carry The Queen’s colours, he to went on to become avery successful stallion.

Another double celebration for Her Majesty,Rhyme Royal taking the London Gold Cup under Lester Piggott and Buttress winning the Tote Bookmakers Handicap under Brian Taylor

Call To Mind’s victory on his debut in adivision of the Dubai Duty Free Maiden, run over a mile, provided The Queen with extra reason to celebrate the day after her 91st birthday. Her Majesty was clearly delighted with the success. The successful colt went on to become asmart stayer, winning the March Stakes at Goodwood.

2010 OCTOBER 23

Four-year-old Rhyme Royal ran consistently for the rest of the season without scoring, but three-year-old Buttress was a rapid improver and the following month took the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot.

Carlton House’s runaway success in the Wade Willis Maiden, run over amile on heavy ground, leaves Her Majesty entertaining hopes of ahistory-making first Derby success. Those hopes strengthened after asmooth win in the Dante Stakes at York the following May,but at Epsom Carlton House narrowly fell short, being beaten by alength into third behind Pour Moi.
