Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Newbury Racecourse for our late August afternoon race fixture.

For everyone here today who also joined us for BetVictor Hungerford Day, we hope you had an enjoyable afternoon and managed to stay cool and hydrated in the warm temperatures we experienced. We were delighted to welcome nearly 10,000 of you to watch a top-quality afternoon of action and local trainer Eve Johnson Houghton stole the show, winning the Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes with Jumby, ridden by William Buick for owners Andrew Pye-Jeary and David Ian in the colours of West Ham.

Appropriately, BetVictor ambassador and former Hammers manager, Harry Redknapp was on hand to present them with their winning trophy. We’ve been enjoying an action-packed summer here at Newbury with plenty more still to come. We are excited to present Dubai Duty Free International Weekend on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 September and an end of summer celebration filled with family fun. Be sure to secure your spot as the weekend will have some great racing, plus Behind the scenes tours, trips to the starts, up close and personal meetings with retired racehorses plus many more activities as part of National Racehorse Week. Tickets are available to book online at the best price with early bird ending soon. Thank you for joining us this afternoon. I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable time, and that you will join us again very soon.

Julian Thick Chief Executive

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our generous sponsors: BetVictor, Outdoor Digital Production and Benchmark Designs, who in partnership with us at the racecourse are proudly presenting an exciting eight-race card including two Pony Races at the very start of the afternoon. It is worth noting that Benchmark Designs are the design and build studio who did the fantastic refurbishment of our 1st Floor Long Room bar and kitchen in the Berkshire Stand. If you haven’t already, make sure you pop in and see their work.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners first place only; between five and seven runners first and second place; eight runners and over first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) first four places.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

2. Choose your bet ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

PLAY SMARTER An interesting renewal for several reasons. The Goodwood race KHAADEM and Raasel finished first and second in is form to take very seriously, and with middle draws probably no bad thing here, they may come to the fore again. Royal Aclaim’s potential is not in question but she’s a short price given what she has achieved, while Highfield Princess doesn’t lack for speed but this is a rare go at 5f. Speedy 2-y-o The Platinum Queen adds another layer of intrigue.
