Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Newbury Racecourse for BetVictor Hungerford Day, featuring top quality action, followed by DJ Judge Jules and Ministry of Sound Classical performing live after racing. With the high temperatures we are currently experiencing, the welfare of our customers, staff and the main stars, the horses, is a priority. Please do stay hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water stations can be found on the end of every bar and we recommend you rehydrate often, especially between alcoholic beverages. We work closely with the vets on course as well as the British Horseracing Authority to monitor conditions and our cooling mist fans which are located in the wash-down area will be in operation all day for the runners. We may decide to limit the amount of time horses remain in both the parade ring and also in the winners enclosure after each race.

Julian Thick Chief Executive

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for their generous support of today’s card; BetVictor, Denford Stud, Mettal UK as well as Education for Everyone, who will be hosting a bucket collection on exit across the main entrances. If you can, please help support this wonderful cause with a generous donation. Summer doesn’t stop here and you can continue to look forward to the end of summer with Dubai Duty Free International Weekend across Friday 16 and Saturday 17 September. Get ready for some family fun, live music and top-class racing action across both days. Tickets are still available at early-bird prices so make sure you don’t miss out. Looking even further ahead, we are delighted that Oktoberfest will make a return to Newbury across the Flat Season Finale Weekend on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 October. With Bavarian beers on offer, traditional food, and lots of oompah, get involved with a fun-packed day out with friends with thrilling live horse racing action on course and celebrations off course. The offering will be included as part of both Premier and Grandstand tickets and it’s a great opportunity to get the whole gang together as there are some brilliant discounts available for group bookings. Thank you for choosing spend your day with us, and I hope you have an enjoyable and profitable time and that we see you again on our next raceday on Friday 19 August.

Named after the local Berkshire town, today’s feature race is the Group 2 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes. Established in 1949, it was initially run over a mile and a half, before becoming one of the most prestigious 7-furlong races in the Flat calendar. Won last year by Sacred, this year’s line-up looks just as competitive.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

2. Choose your bet ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

Pleasegambleresponsibly.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

How To Bet

Formoreinformationvisitwww.gambleaware.co.uk

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners first place only; between five and seven runners first and second place; eight runners and over first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) first four places.

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

For all our customers and staff attending today, please make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the afternoon to remain hydrated.

Hopefully many of you will have brought along a re-fillable water bottle and tap water will be freely available on all our indoor bars. Please note the outdoor concession units will not be able to provide complimentary tap water to customers. If you are wanting to purchase water on the day, the price of our recyclable canned water which is available across all Newbury bars will be reduced by 50% to £1.

This weekend, there will be additional water provision in place as well as increased hands to help with the cooling of the horses. It is likely that we may also limit the amount of time the horses spend both in the parade ring before their race and after in the Winners Enclosure.

During the redevelopment, major improvements were made to the welfare facilities for all horses with the redevelopment of the stables and reconfigured pre-parade ring which has new covered saddling boxes.

We have also introduced equine cooling misting fans which are located in the washdown area to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

There are plenty of covered areas to stay directly out of the sun across both Premier and Grandstand.

Finally, water stations will be set up during the afternoon and in advance of the concert with bottled water being distributed.

We have a specially qualified team of equine vets on duty across all our racedays who are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses both before and after each race.

In recent years, we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention to all our participants.

Race Summary: A really competitive looking race with two progressive young fillies seeking a first black type win. The older horses are quite closely matched on form, Balqees looks interesting in first-time visor and Abiyah Athbah finally has her favoured fast ground, but on ratings they are running for place prize money Fateenah is the more experienced of the pair, though is yet to encounter ground this quick or a trip this sharp, but comes from a stable who is two from three in UK raids. On a line through last year’s winner, Bayan Athbah, her stablemate EKLEEL ATHBAH should just have the edge over the French filly and she impressed when winning despite greenness, over course and distance last time.
