Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Weatherbys Super Sprint Day, featuring six high class races. The Weatherbys Super Sprint was established in 1991 and has become a major target for speedy two-yearolds that were bought at auction. This is the 31st running of the race which has played host to some outstanding winners in the past, including the likes of Superstar Leo, Tiggy Wiggy, Mrs Danvers, Happy Romance and most recently Gubbass. Many thanks to long-term sponsors, Weatherbys for their continued and generous support of the race as well as todays other sponsors bet365, Highclere Castle Gin and the European Breeders Fund. We have recently launched a brand new partnership with Highclere Castle Gin and are delighted that the multi-award winning spirit will be served from our bars today so if you are a gin fan make sure you have a try. Following the racing action this afternoon, Craig David will return to the Party in the Paddock stage to perform a 90 minute set after the last race at approximately 5.15pm. If you have close proximity access you can collect your wristbands at any point throughout the day from the collections gazebo in the Grandstand Enclosure. Parkinson’s UK will be doing bucket collection at each entrance from 4.20pm till after the concert finishes. If you can please help support this wonderful cause with a generous donation. With the high temperatures we are currently experiencing, the welfare of our customers, staff and the main stars, the horses, is a priority. Please do stay hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water stations can be found on the end of every bar and we recommend you rehydrate often, especially between alcoholic beverages. We work closely with the vets on course as well as the British Horseracing Authority to monitor conditions and our cooling mist fans which are located in the wash-down area will be in operation all day for the runners. Looking ahead, there is plenty around the corner as we see the finale of our popular Gin Thursday evenings next week on Thursday 21 July where 30 specialty gins will be available plus live music and an after party. Then we see our second Party in the Paddock act on Saturday 13 August for BetVictor Hungerford Day with the Ministry of Sound Classical and special guest DJ Judge Jules. Racegoers are likely aware that today’s card was originally scheduled to have seven races, but disappointingly no horses were declared to run in the final race and it was removed from the card. We understand this was due to a concerted action by racehorse trainers in relation to prize money. Given this we wanted to reassure our visitors about Newbury’s ongoing commitment to prize money: Newbury has always had a portfolio of races run at different values and aimed at different types of horses throughout the year and as an independent PLC we are transparent about our prize money strategy and our finances. Today we will run races worth just over £400,000 in total prize funds. We have an open dialogue on these matters currently ongoing with the National Trainers Federation executive and we are keen to work within the industry structures to improve prize money when we can afford to so. That said, we have to run the racecourse on a sustainable basis and we have committed to return to overall 2019 prize money levels this year, despite having lost £2.4M in 2020 and barely breaking even last year as a result of COVID. With all the revenue uncertainty and the rising cost pressures many organisations are facing at this current time, we believe this is already a substantial commitment being made by our shareholders. Looking at our forecast for 2022, we will most likely put up £2.5M in executive contribution to prize money this year, which is the largest amount the racecourse has ever committed to. In addition to this we have recently publicly announced an increase to prize money levels when our new media contract comes into effect next year, committing a minimum of 40% of total media revenues to our prize money for the next three years. As a PLC our total media revenues and profits are always fully disclosed unlike most other racecourses, giving full transparency so there can be no misunderstanding about our commitment. We remain entirely committed to growing prize money levels in the future. We hope you enjoy this afternoon’s racing.

Meet 20 minutes before the race at the designated meeting point, left hand side of the weighing room in the Grandstand Enclosure. This is on a ﬁrst come ﬁrst served basis. 2.40 for the 2.56 race 3.45 for the 4.05 race

Craig David is performing live after racing on the Party in the Paddock stage in the Grandstand Enclosure at approximately 5.15pm. If you have close proximity access for the concert the collection point and entry is from the gazebo in the Grandstand Enclosure marked 15 on the racecard map and wristbands are available to collect throughout the day.

From 18.30 we will have a free shuttle bus running from the Eastern Entrance to Newbury Train Station until 21.00.

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? It is 30 years since the first running of The Weatherbys Super Sprint, and its innovative race conditions see it open to horses that were sold at public auction as yearlings or two-year-olds for £63,000 or less. The weights are allocated so that each horse running carries 1lb less for every £5,000 less than £63,000. Those competing will be bidding for a share of the total prize fund of £150,000. The race was specifically framed in order to give good value horses the chance of a big pay day and took place for the first time in 1991 under the name “Newbury Sales Super Sprint Trophy”. It was in 1993 that Weatherbys sponsored the race for the first time and gave it the title “Weatherbys Super Sprint”. The race has taken place every year since 1991, apart from 2007 due to heavy rainfall. The most successful trainer is Richard Hannon Sr who won the race seven times courtesy of Lyric Fantasy, Risky, Miss Stamper, Presto Vento, If Paradise, Lady Livius and Monsieur Chevalier. Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey have each had three winners of the race. From a riding angle, only three jockeys have won the race

twice, Richard Hughes (Monsieur Chevalier and Tiggy Wiggy), Michael Hills (Brief Glimpse and Superstar Leo) and Michael Roberts (Lyric Fantasy and Good Girl). Many horses to have run in The Weatherbys Super Sprint have gone on to achieve great things, most recently 2016 winner Mrs Danvers. Jonathan Portman’s ﬁlly followed up her success in this race with victory in the Listed

Bathwick Tyres St Hugh’s Fillies’ Stakes here at Newbury, before going on to record a first Group race success in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket at the end of the season. Arguably the most successful winner in the race’s history was Tiggy Wiggy who built on her success with a win in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes before completing the hat-trick in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. The flying filly also finished in the Classic frame when coming home in third in the 1000 Guineas. Temple Meads landed the first prize of £100,000 in 2010, before winning the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes later in the season back here at Newbury. The 2009 winner Monsieur Chevalier went on to achieve glory in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, emulating Risky who had completed the same double seventeen years earlier. Unfortunately, injury prevented his return to the track as a three-year-old but he returned back to his best form as a four-year-old when finishing second in the Group 1

Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and winning a Listed race at Goodwood. In 2005, we saw a shock when the Martin Dwyer-ridden Lady Livius stormed home to win at odds of 100/1, the longest priced winner to date. Apart from Peniaphobia and Tiggy Wiggy, who did it in successive years, the only time that a horse has dipped under the minute mark in this five furlongs sprint was in 2000 when Superstar Leo stormed home in 59.19 seconds before going on to finish second in two Group 1s, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the Phoenix Stakes. Fillies have an excellent strike rate, possibly down to the 5lb allowance that they receive from the colts. 17 of the 29 renewals of this race have been won by fillies. Happy Romance was victorious in 2020 for the successful team of Richard Hannon and Sean Levey, who teamed up again last year to win with Gubbass. The talented colt was given a fine ride by his jockey and showed fine subsequent juvenile form, finishing third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes.

Rogue Millenium - trained by Clover to win the Lingﬁeld Oaks Trial and also owned by The Rogues Gallery

Tom Clover put winning the Weatherbys Super Sprint high on his wish list when he first took out his trainer’s licence in 2016, and after two good placings already he looks to have the perfect candidate for Saturday’s £200,000 renewal in ante-post favourite Rogue Spirit. The attraction of the Super Sprint is obvious, with a whopping first prize and every finisher down to tenth going home with a share of the purse, and having cost just 11,000gns, despite being by Dark Angel, Rogue Spirit gets in off a handy weight in a race in which runners must not have cost more than £63,000. Clover saddled Declarationoflove to finish Tom Clover - trainer of Rogue Spirit second to Bengali Boys in 2017 and he had £7,000 purchase Soldierpoy finish a good third to Happy Romance two years ago, but neither had credentials to compare with Rogue Spirit’s two wins and an excellent second from only three starts. The gelding’s colourful owners The Rogues Gallery - ambassador the football and film star hard man Vinnie Jones - have already had big days this year with their filly Rogue Millennium, whose Lingfield Oaks Trial win earned her a supplementary entry for the Oaks, but Rogue Spirit can give them their biggest payday yet on one of Newbury’s most popular days of the year. Clover is really looking forward to it and said: “The Super Sprint is a really good pot to be aiming at with an inexpensive horse, and from the day we bought Rogue Spirit we thought he could be just the type for it, hence why we dodged Royal Ascot, even though I thought he was capable of running well in the Windsor Castle. “We went for a Wolverhampton novice instead, having already won at Beverley on his debut and then been beaten only a neck by Chateau in the

Two Year Old Trophy back there next time, and he won there in the style he was entitled to. The Two-Year-Old Trophy form looks particularly good, with Chateau finishing fourth in the Windsor Castle and third-placed The Ridler winning the Norfolk.” He added: “When we started training we didn’t have a lot of money, and it was fun to think we might buy an inexpensive horse and have a realistic crack at a big pot, and we’ve picked up good money before with Declarationoflove and Soldierpoy. Rogue Spirit seems really well, and he’s certainly working well, so hopefully he can run a big race granted the luck in running you sometimes need in these big fields.” The Rogues Gallery syndicate have become significant supporters of the stable, with 20 wins in three years. Clover enjoys their involvement and said: “The Rogues are a hugely enthusiastic team of real horse racing fans. They just love it, whether it’s a quiet mid-week meeting or one of racing’s big days, or a visit to the yard. Wherever it is, there’s always a good turn out,, and we’ve got some lovely horses for them too, which is great. “We had nine winners for them last year, and we’ve already had eight this year, including two from Rogue Millennium, who was second in a Group 3 at Newcastle after running in the Oaks and will probably be seen next in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. “They also have Rogue Lightning in the Rose Bowl at Newbury on Friday, and he’s really quite a nice horse who was impressive first time out in a Newmarket novice which is already working out well. It’s definitely a syndicate which is going places.” If successful, Clover would be just the third Newmarket trainer to win the Weatherbys Super Sprint in its 31-year history, following his late fatherin-law Michael Jarvis, who won with Blue Iris in 1995, and William Haggas, who won with Superstar Leo in 2000 and Jargelle in 2008. The Hannon stable has dominated the event almost from the start, with no fewer than 11 wins, and Richard Hannon, successful in three of the last four runnings, is responsible for five of Monday’s 27 confirmations, including Miami Girl, who has won at Newmarket and Windsor and was a good fifth in Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary. Rod Millman is another multiple winner, with Lord Kintyre (1997) and Betty’s Hope (2019), and he has Ignac Lamar, Safari Dream and Woolhampton. Gubbass - last year’s winner for Richard Hannon
