How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? I NT R OD UCI NG A N EW VOICE DANI J ACK SO N Our Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes Day is set to be a day to remember, both on and off the track, for several reasons. In a brand-new initiative, we’re welcoming a fresh face to the commentary box - Dani Jackson. The first female on-track race caller in the UK for over a decade (yes, really), we couldn’t be more excited to partner with her. Initially starting her commentary career in greyhound racing 10years ago, Dani has previously guest commentated over in Turf Paradise in the U.S. and, after her debut during today’s Injured Jockeys Fund Charity Race, will be hosting the rest of our charity races across 2022 including: Greatwood Charity Race & Raceday - Thursday 9th June HEROS Charity Race & Raceday - Friday 12th August British Horse Society Charity Race & Raceday - Thursday 3rd November Female race-callers aren’t often heard in horseracing, so Dani’s involvement at Newbury marks a new initiative we’ve been working on designed to champion female race-callers as part of the Odds Against: Newbury’s Female CommentatorProgramme. Through the activity, we’re aiming to provide a pathway for aspiringfemale race-callers to gain valuable live race day experience. Speaking on the partnership, Dani Jackson said: “I’m very excited and honoured to be involved with this new initiative and be named the first female commentator as part of Newbury’s brand-new programme to help build apathway for more female voices into horse racing commentary.” “Commentating has been a passion of mine for several years, but this programme is providing a more regular platform for live race day experience that I’ve not had and I’m looking forward to debuting my first live UK call at such a prestigious track in May.” If you’re a seasoned racegoer, you know Lockinge Stakes is combined with our ever-popular Ladies Day and this year, it’s back with a twist. After today’s charity race, head to the Main Stage where you’ll find a female-led Panel of Pioneers talking exclusively to Newbury racegoers. FIVE FAMOUS WINNERS OF THE AL SHAQAB LOCKINGE STAKES PALL MALL (1958) The winner of the ﬁrst running of the Lockinge Stakes cemented an enduring association between his owner Queen Elizabeth II and Newbury racecourse, which she continues to visit annually. Pall Mall won the race just weeks after springing an upset to land the 2,000 Guineas. He became the ﬁrst of only three dual winners when gaining a second Lockinge victory in 1959.

BRIGADIER GERARD (1972) One of the greatest racehorses ever to compete in Britain graced Newbury in 1972 when he began his four-year-old campaign with a comfortable defeat of Grey Mirage in the Lockinge. He remained unbeaten until August that year when he suffered the one and only defeat of a brilliant 18 race career at the hands of Roberto in the International Stakes at York.

KRIS (1980) Kris had been compared with Brigadier Gerard after a dominant three-year-old season in 1979 when he claimed a haul of big races including the St James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He looked set for another successful campaign when capturing the Lockinge Stakes but injury limited his season to just one more start before he was retired with a record of 14 wins from 16 starts.

HAWK WING (2003) Often hailed by Aidan O’Brien as being capable of great things, this was the day when the colt ﬁnally delivered. He had recorded a string of second places in 2002 in the 2,000 Guineas, Derby, Irish Champion Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. But on his ﬁrst start of the year at Newbury the following year he made all the running to charge clear of his opponents and win by a record margin of 11 lengths.

FRANKEL (2012) The world’s highest rated racehorse paid his second visit to Newbury, where he had won the Greenham Stakes the previous year, and triumphed in the fashion to which the public had become accustomed, winning by a five length margin. This was achieved despite being the subject of an injury scare a few weeks earlier which had threatened to put his career in the balance. It was the first of five Group 1 successes in 2012 which ended at Ascot in the Champion Stakes before he was retired to stud with a perfect record of 14 victories.
