Good afternoon, Happy Easter and a warm welcome to the second day of Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend. This afternoon sees the sixth running of our longest flat race, now with a value of £40,000, The Compton Beauchamp Estates Ltd Silver Bar Handicap, which takes place over two miles and two furlongs. My thanks extend to Compton Beauchamp Estates, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, Coln Valley Stud and Dubai Duty Free for their sponsorship of today’s card. Many of you will notice that first race will be run in memory of the three-times Champion Jockey Joe Mercer, OBE and we are so pleased to welcome many of his family here today. Joe had an incredible record here at Newbury with five wins in the Greenham and four in the Spring Cup alone. You can find a tribute to him within these pages. We have a wide-range of activities for all the family to enjoy this afternoon away from the action on-course so make sure you pay a visit to the Family Zone, located next door to the Eastern Entrance with Face-painting, Petting Zoo and special appearances from Peter Rabbit and Harry the Horse. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Ouzbeck our Retired Racehorse and his friend Lola, who have been brought here today in partnership with local charity Greatwood. Ouzbeck and his friends will be making regular appearances here across the course of the year. The Dubai Duty Free Marquee is well worth a visit with complimentary Arabic coffee and dates on offer, plus the Easter Wheel of Fortune with loads of prizes up for grabs. Finally, we delighted to be re-opening the first floor of the Berkshire Stand this weekend, which has undergone a major refurbishment as part of the recent redevelopment. With a dedicated Gin Bar, relaxed lounge seating and a new terrace area overlooking the paddock, we very much hope you enjoy this new Premier facility. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we will see you back here again on Friday 13 May for the first day of our next two-day fixture featuring on Saturday the return of the Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge and Ladies Day. Julian Thick Chief Executive

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Please gamble responsibly. For more information visit www.gambleaware.co.uk
Tote vs Starting Price? We’ll pay whichever is better on win bets!
We’ll always pay at least SP on Win bets and if the Tote dividend is greater, we’ll pay out at that price. Tote.co.uk, Tote.ie, Tote App and selected UK racecourse customers only. Promotion applies to Tote Win and win part of each way bets on all UK & Irish races, staking limits apply. Full terms and conditions available at Tote.co.uk/promotions. 18+. BeGambleaware.org

JOE MERCER’S NEWBURY RECORD Joe Mercer was one of the finest jockeys of his era who over 36 seasons rode 2,810 winners and won eight British Classics, including a memorable 2000 Guineas in 1971 when Brigadier Gerard beat Mill Reef. Brigadier Gerard, who Joe rode in all of his 17 wins from 18 races, was one of the sport’s greatest racehorses whose successes included the Lockinge Stakes in 1972. His victory in Newbury’s most prestigious Flat race was one of 185 winners the jockey rode at Newbury between 1952 and 1985, of which 67 were trained by Major Dick Hern. Joe rode his first winner at Newbury in April 1952 on Dennington in the Thatcham Selling Handicap for DFG Hastings, then 30 minutes later rode his second, courtesy of Polar Jest, trained by Herbert Smyth, in the Newbury Spring Cup. He rode his last winner at the track in August 1985 when the Peter Walwyn-trained Nashia captured the St Hugh’s Stakes. Joe’s Lockinge Stakes success on Brigadier Gerard was the first of three victories in the race. The others came on Boldboy (1974) and Kris (1980), who were both also hugely popular horses in their time. Quite simply, Brigadier Gerard was one of the best horses in the history of the thoroughbred, winning 17 of his 18 starts, at distances from six furlongs to a mile and a half. He won three times at Newbury, taking the Berkshire Stakes on his debut in June 1970, the Washington Singer Stakes some two months later and the Lockinge Stakes as a four-year-old. The gelding Boldboy won 14 times and was placed on another 19 occasions, while Kris, trained by Henry Cecil, won 14 out of 16 starts, including three wins at Newbury where he captured the Horris Hill, Greenham and Lockinge Stakes. Joe rode seven winners for HM The Queen at Newbury, notably on the Classic winner Highclere, who won a division of the Donnington Maiden in 1973 before developing into a top-class racemare, but also won at Newbury on the famous names such as Provoke, Highest Hopes, Light Cavalry, High Line, Auction Ring, Relkino, RB Chesne and Sharp Edge. We are delighted to welcome his family and friends here today.
