Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the first day of the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials Weekend and another Flat season here at Newbury Racecourse. The highlights of today’s excellent card are the Group 3 Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings, and the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Stakes for three-year-old fillies. The former has been won by some exceptional racehorses over the years, including Frankel, Olympic Glory, Kingman and Muhaarar; the latter is one of the premier fillies’ trials and a top race in its own right, won last year by Alcohol Free. With the array of equine talent on display today, it would be no surprise if we see more superstars of the future grab the limelight at Newbury this afternoon. I would also like to draw attention to our first race on the card today, the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes registered as the John Porter in recognition of the founder of Newbury Racecourse. Earlier this year, the 100th anniversary of his death took place and you can find a pop-up exhibition on the first floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand. 2022 marks a 26-year association between Dubai Duty Free and Newbury Racecourse. During that time, Dubai Duty Free has enjoyed considerable success as a business and we are hugely grateful for their ongoing and generous support of racing here. We are delighted to welcome Executive Vice Chairman Colm McLoughlin and members of the Dubai Duty Free family back to Newbury after missing out on the 25th anniversary last year and wish them an enjoyable Easter weekend with us. Additionally, grateful thanks also go to our other sponsors: Watership Down Stud, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing who celebrate their 30th anniversary this year and recently opened, The Retreat at Elcot Park for their sponsorship of today’s card. There is plenty of activity taking place across the site today as part of our Racing Experience Day, including Behind the Scenes Tours, Trips to the Start plus the Dubai Duty Free Marquee which is worth a visit for a complimentary Arabic coffee and the Easter Wheel of Fortune. There are some great prizes up for grabs, kindly provided by Dubai Duty Free. We are also delighted to be part of Great British Racing’s inaugural Ownership Experience tour to showcase the different types of shared ownership on offer and at a variety of price points. Make sure you pay a visit to the Syndicate Village located next door to the Eastern Entrance and our Retired Racehorse, Ouzbeck. Finally, we delighted to be re-opening the first floor of the Berkshire Stand today, which has undergone a major refurbishment as part of the redevelopment. With a dedicated Gin Bar, lounge seating and a new terrace area overlooking the paddock, we very much hope you enjoy this new Premier facility. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we will see many of you back here again tomorrow for our Easter Sunday Raceday.

Julian Thick Chief Executive

How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Please gamble responsibly. Race Summary: Lots of potential on show, and David Menuisier’s son of Lope De Vega LIONEL is taken to emerge on top after shaping really well when a debut second here last autumn. Almuhit also has the benefit of experience and appeals as the pick of the Gosden’s duo, with Charlie Appleby’s newcomers Natural World and Ottoman Fleet two more highly interesting sorts in a most intriguing maiden.

She remains very lightly raced ahead of her 4-y-o return so could be the answer. The likeable Carp Kid should be on the premises again, while Moktasaab isn’t the most straightforward but has plenty of ability starting out for a new yard. 1-2-3: 1.RANDOM HARVEST (IRE) 2.CARP KID (IRE) 3.MOKTASAAB FREE form for all British and Irish meetings is available online every day at timeform.com/free
