We would like to thank all our customers for their ongoing patience while the refurbishment of the Long Room Bar and Kitchen on the first floor of the Berkshire Stand takes place. Following the major redevelopment of our outdoor areas across the site, our attention in now focused on upgrading some of our indoor spaces and bars, which is also based on customer feedback and data which we are confident will improve your experience with us. The newly refurbished Long Room Paddock Bar and Long Room Racetrack Bar will also feature a dedicated Gin Bar as well as a Premium upgrade space with ample lounge and poseur seating.

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to one of our new fixtures for 2022, Sunday Afternoon Racing. Firstly, I would like to thank you for your patience regarding the refurbishment of the Long Room Bar and Kitchen on the first floor of the Berkshire Stand, which will be out of action until the Spring. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and if you would like to see what the planned changes will look like, the team on the Ground Floor reception will be able to show you the revised layout which we are very excited about. Annual Members will continue to be able to access the Lockinge and Carnarvon Rooms during this period. My thanks must go to today’s sponsors, we have The Federation of Bloodstock Agents and Racing TV, as well as having two memorial races dedicated to Karen Jackson and The Hon. Benjamin Leigh. Karen had a place in everyone’s hearts here at Newbury as she worked in the Owners and Trainers restaurant spreading the Uniquely Newbury values of delighting customers on every raceday. She won an award in 2019, recognising her brilliant customer service which she was so proud to receive. Her positivity and personality will be much missed. The life of The Hon. Benjamin Leigh will also be celebrated today as a former jockey who rode numerous point-to-point and hunter chase winners. He played a pivotal role in the success of Hamilton & Partners and subsequently Weatherbys Hamilton, which is proud to be sponsoring the race in Benjamin’s memory today. Benjamin was known for his loyalty and generosity to friends and family. Please note that the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand will be closed today due to a private event, therefore please try some of our other areas on site for any food or drink. For those football fans we will be showing the Leeds United vs Manchester United here today at 2pm on selected screens across the racecourse including the ground floor of both the Berkshire and Hampshire Stands, as well as The Crafty Filly. Finally, we are delighted to welcome Gary Kirton today who is raising money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Gary has challenged himself to walk the course at 41 racecourses across the country! If you would like to donate to this cause there will be a bucket collection at the Eastern Entrance from just before the last race. We send the best of luck to Gary for this great cause. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? KAREN JACKSON Karen Jackson was a truly inspirational and courageous woman, leaving a sunshine shaped mark on the lives of everyone she met. Although Karen suffered a long battle with cancer, you would never know as she was always positive, cheerful and a bit crazy! Karen loved working in the Owners and Trainers restaurant at Newbury Racecourse, stealing everyone’s hearts with her infectious smile and sunshiny personality. She won an award in 2019 for “delighting customers” for which she was very proud. Horse-racing became her passion and owning a share of the four-legged gentleman, Coudefoudre, gave her a new lease for life. In honour of Karen, ‘Bring Your Own Sunshine’ is a charity single by saxophonist, vocalist and composer Kim Cypher, to raise money for cancer charity Maggie’s and to share hope, positivity and sunshine. The Hon Benjamin Leigh 24th October 1942 – 4th June 2020 We are delighted to be celebrating Benjamin Leigh’s life today with the running of the Benjamin Leigh Memorial Novices’ Handicap Steeplechase. Ben died two years ago but due to the pandemic this has been our first opportunity to remember a much loved man with Jennifer, Sam, his grandchildren Emma and Alexa and other members of his family, together with so many of his friends. Benjamin Leigh was the third son of the 4th Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire. Educated at Cothill and Eton, Ben served in the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own) and rode numerous point-to-point and hunter chase winners. He won the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown in 1965 on his own Rueil and was assistant to Tim Forster and Freddie Maxwell before taking out his own licence in the early 1970s at Neardown Stables in Lambourn. Ben regarded Brer Rabbit as the best horse he trained and it was at Kempton, on being beaten a short head and reputedly ridden counter to instructions, that Lester Piggott

was famously told by Ben that he would never ride for him again! The great jockey’s career did not appear to suffer unduly. Then followed over 30 years of involvement in the insurance industry where he counted many of the leading trainers as friends and clients, with Henry Cecil, Barry Hills and Nicky Henderson to name but a few in a list that represented a Who’s Who of the Turf. He played a pivotal role in the success of Hamilton & Partners and subsequently Weatherbys Hamilton, which is proud to be sponsoring the race in Ben’s memory today. Diminutive in stature Benjamin Leigh made up for it and more in colour and personality. Quick of wit, and occasional temper, Ben was the most loyal and generous of friends and is greatly missed by those of us whose lives are unquestionably poorer without him.

Admission

All tickets, badges and other forms of entry to the Racecourse (including car parks and other surrounding areas owned by the Racecourse) are issued strictly subject to the Racecourse’s terms and conditions of entry. Betting

Laying of bets is subject to Racecourse terms and conditions. The Betting Ring Manager is located in the Grandstand ground ﬂoor, opposite Donna Italia, today. Customers of the boards and rails bookmakers should check their itemised tickets immediately on receipt, as mistakes cannot be rectiﬁed after the ‘off’.

Collecting your winnings: If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the ‘Weighed in’ announcement has been made. There may still be a Steward’s Enquiry and the ﬁrst past the post, or placed horses may be disqualiﬁed. With Bookmakers: A late pay service is available in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
