Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Betfair Super Saturday, one of the highlights of Newbury’s Jump Season. Firstly, I would like to thank you for your patience regarding the refurbishment of the Long Room Bar and Kitchen on the first floor of the Berkshire Stand, which will be out of action until the Spring. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and if you would like to see what the planned changes will look like, the team on the Ground Floor reception will be able to show you the revised layout which we are very excited about. Annual Members will continue to be able to access the Lockinge and Carnarvon Rooms during this period. We have a fabulous day of racing ahead of us, which is often the last opportunity to watch some potential Cheltenham Festival contenders in action before they line up in less than five weeks’ time. My thanks once again extend to Betfair who this year celebrate their tenth year of sponsorship of this prestigious card and helping to make it one of jump racing’s best days. The Betfair Hurdle, worth £155,000 continues to be the richest handicap hurdle in the UK and is supported by a highly competitive card; including the two chase races in the Denman and Game Spirit, both of which have been won by some jumping legends. Racegoers are encouraged to head over to the Betfair Daily Rewards Zone located in the Grandstand Enclosure, giving over 18’s the chance to win some exciting prizes on the spin the wheel, or even relax in the massage chair with a quick shoe shine! Hot drinks and comfy seating are also supplied in this zone so it is well worth a visit. Finally, don’t miss the return of jumping heroes and Betfair Super Saturday winners, Altior and Native River who will be making their first public appearance since retiring last season! They will be parading in the paddock between the Denman Chase and the Game Spirit Chase at approximately 2.35pm. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. How To Bet There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground ﬂoor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number. 2. Choose your bet – ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types: • ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. • ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet. • What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places. • The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure! 3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet. 4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”. 5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings! 6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? The History Of The Betfair Denman Chase

The Betfair Denman Chase is one of Newbury’s newest races and immediately became one of the most signiﬁcant conditions chases of the jumps season when it was established in 2000. The race was originally named the Aon Chase and, run over a distance of an extended 2m7f, has become a regular destination for leading staying chasers, many of which go on to contest the Cheltenham Gold Cup. See More Business set the pattern when he captured the inaugural running the year after he landed the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He was the ﬁrst of ten winners trained by Paul Nicholls whose other winners included champions Kauto Star in 2007, Denman in 2008 and last years winner Secret Investor. Kauto Star and Denman both went on from Newbury to triumph in the following month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, a feat matched since by Coneygree in 2015 and Native River in 2018. The popular Denman’s connection with Newbury, where he also became one of only three horses to win two editions of the Hennessy Gold Cup, now the Ladbrokes Trophy, in 2007 and 2009, was formally recognised when the race was renamed the Denman Chase at the time Betfair took over sponsorship in 2012. Native River is the only horse to win the Denman Chase three times after his success in last year’s renewal, while his 2018 victory established Richard Johnson as the most successful jockey in the race with four wins to his name.

ALTIOR

OVER SUCCESSIVE SEASONS ALTIOR BECAME ONE OF THE MOST BANKABLE STARS IN THE SPORT, EMBARKING ON A 19RACE WINNING STREAK BETWEEN OCTOBER 2015 AND NOVEMBER 2019. He was unbeaten at Cheltenham where he won four times, landing the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Arkle Trophy and two editions of the Queen Mother Champion Chase. There could have been more but for missing the Festival in 2020 and 2021. At Newbury Altior has the unique distinction of being the only horse to win the Game Spirit Chase three times, in 2017, 2018 and 2020. Trained by Nicky Henderson for Patricia and Chris Pugh and ridden by Nico de Boinville, he

won 21 out of 26 races, 10 times at Grade 1 level, and retired in September with winnings of £1.3 million. Patricia and Chris Pugh said: “We are delighted that Altior is returning to parade at his old stomping ground and thank Newbury racecourse for this invitation. Altior had some seminal experiences here which were critical to his career. We would, of course, also like to thank all the fantastic racegoers for their kind words after Altior’s retirement.”

NATIVE RIVER

NATIVE RIVER WAS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST STAYING CHASERS IN TRAINING WHO WON A MEMORABLE BATTLE WITH MIGHT BITE FOR THE 2018 CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP, IN THE WARRIORLIKE MANNER FOR WHICH HE WAS SYNONYMOUS. He was trained by Colin Tizzard for Brocade Racing’s Garth and Ann Broom, amassing earnings of £1.1 million during a 32 race career in which he won 14 times, seven under champion jump jockey Richard Johnson. He was a regular at Newbury where he ran six times and was unbeaten in ﬁve chases. He is the most successful horse in the history of the Betfair Denman Chase, capturing the prize in 2017, 2018 and 2020. He also won the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in 2016 and from there went on to capture the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow.

Garth Broom said: “Native River was unbeaten in ﬁve runs at Newbury. The season in which he won the Ladbrokes Trophy, the Welsh National and the Betfair Denman Chase and then ﬁnished a very close third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup would be a hard to top as a season. Of course he then went and trumped that by winning the Gold Cup the following year. “He performed for us every season in top class races. He always raced with his heart on his sleeve. People took to him because he didn’t know how to run a bad race. He gave us so many good memories.”

The History Of The Betfair Hurdle

Persian War

The Betfair Hurdle is the richest handicap hurdle run in Europe and has a long history as one of the most competitive races in the jumps calendar. When it was first run in 1963, the 2m handicap hurdle took place at Aintree and was known as the Schweppes Gold Trophy, but soon found a permanent home at Newbury. It became an annual target for Ryan Price who captured four of the first five runnings, twice with Rosyth, each winner ridden to victory by Josh Gifford. In 1968 Persian War set a weight-carrying record when he shouldered 11st 13lb to victory and the following month became the first of only two horses to win the showpiece hurdle and the Champion Hurdle. It was another 27 years before Make A Stand, trained by Martin Pipe, matched Persian War’s achievement by which time the Tote had taken over the sponsorship. Nicky Henderson holds the record for the most wins in the race, recording five successes, while Gifford, who also won the race as a trainer when Deep Sensation triumphed in 1990, retains the record for most wins as a jockey.
